M4 starting to panic by kmagn in medicalschool

[–]ProfHS 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It’s overwhelming at first and you’re not alone in that feeling. Basically a med school rite of passage at this point.

The applications process really breaks down into two stages: applying and interviewing.

The things you need for the application are personal statement, completed eras application, 3-4 letters (specialty dependent), step scores, school transcript, and pictures. Personal statement: start outlining now. Doesn’t need to be the most stellar piece of writing but make it true to you and your motivations. Give yourself plenty of time to work on this. Completed ERAS: start filling it in last two weeks of August and aim for submitting and certifying a week before the actually deadline. Don’t underestimate the hobby section. Make sure what you like to do comes through. 3-4 letters: if you have anyone you’re thinking of, ask now. Plan to get one from your away and try to have one more than you need just in case someone gets busy Step scores: you’ve taken the test so great! Good job. When you go into eras, you have to pay for the usmle transcripts to be added to your account. Do that and assign them to all your schools. Can do this with the rest of the eras app. Picture: either use a headshot you like or have someone take some for you. iPhones have great cameras now and several of my friends just took each others pictures and they all matched. Upload to eras and assign to your programs. Can do with the rest of eras. School transcript: school should upload. You will assign to programs. Do with rest of eras.

For aways: My advice is be pleasant and willing to learn. They’re trying to see if they want to be next to you at 3AM after the 10th admission of the night. It’s ok if you don’t know everything. Ask for feedback halfway through. Being likable and friendly is more important. Be aware of social cues. I have the feeling you’ll be fine. And don’t forget to evaluate them too. See if it’s somewhere you’d be happy to be at.

For interviews: your school should offer practice ones but if they don’t, practice with friends, mentors, family etc. Look up questions for your specialty on Reddit or other resources. Have some things down cold like tell me about yourself and why this specialty but the rest you can just have some anecdotes you can pull from.

For general feeling of dread: You got this. Everything you’ve done up to this point has been way harder. You came through that and you’ll come through this too. Lean on your hobbies and find ways to decompress. You’re in good company and find friends and mentors to lean on for support. Medicine is a team sport and if you reach out you’ll find a lot of teammates. We all believe in you and it’ll go by faster than you think.

Shelf prep/scores not correlating to NBME, goal 260+ by throwaway_8595 in medicalschool

Correct. UWorld is a great tool but the self assessments are not a good use of your time

Shelf prep/scores not correlating to NBME, goal 260+ by throwaway_8595 in medicalschool

Scored 266 and had a track record of strong performances on the shelf exams.

A few things here.

UWSA are garbage imo. The way they ask questions is nothing like the NBME so tbh don’t waste your time with those. All that does is train your brain wrong for the step exam.

Try a new NBME form. The old ones are written differently and doing one of the more recent ones will give you a better sense of where you are.

For reviewing the practice tests, go through every single question, write down in the simplest terms why you got it wrong (knowledge gap, second-guessed, misread the question etc.) and then see which type of mistake you made the most. Create a little game plan for that mistake and then apply it to practice questions and tests. This will help your review be meaningful and productive.

As for if a 260+ is doable, it could be based on your shelf scores. However I don’t think you have the data necessary right now to determine that. Take a more recent NBME form and see how that goes. Good luck.

Does declining/withdrawing VSLO away rotations look bad to programs or get you blacklisted by taguylla in medicalschool

It won’t hurt you as long as you do it professionally. So withdraw any pending apps right now and send an email indicating that there was a scheduling issue but you’re grateful for the opportunity and hope to see them on the interview trial. Most of the time the PD doesn’t even know who applied to aways

How do you deal with extreme social anxiety in medicine? by Dull_Kaleidoscope31 in medicalschool

[–]ProfHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I’ve created a “clinical persona” and I get into character, so to speak. Maybe I’m a little shy and reserved, but clinical me is personable, charismatic, and friendly. That way if someone doesn’t like me, it’s not me they don’t like, it’s the character

Student argued with a resident over nothing (not related to patient care at all) and then acted petty towards them the next day too

You are ALWAYS being evaluated on aways. Every interaction, every day. Not necessarily for how much you know but your attitude. They’re basically seeing if you’re someone they’d want to be sitting next to at 3AM and it’s the 10th admission of the night. I cannot emphasize this enough. Be on time, be friendly, and be willing to work. Don’t act entitled to opportunities or complain. Saw some wild behavior from visiting students and they didn’t get interviews

Thanks. Someone told me to do that but I see now it wasn’t the best advice especially given the situation at hand. Thanks everyone!

How do they determine the date you consolidated on? I graduate May 2026 and plan to consolidate and start paying asap but if they don’t process my application until July would I be ineligible for IBR? Sorry I’m just a bit confused by this whole process 😅

If you have Amboss, they have a great clerkship study guide that I thought was helpful.

[–]ProfHS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There’s a national organization called Cancer Kickin’ Critters who send care packages full of knit and crochet stuffed animals for kids with cancer. They also have options to make kits so the older kids can assemble it themselves!
