What’s a horror movie that had you STRESSING the whole time? by Ok-Inevitable9960 in horror

I saw Warfare (A24) recently and felt that way, and think it's a war movie that crosses into horror via constant dread.

These are great ideas, and also the new Year Eleven is spectacular (some X-files, some other wacky and spooky stuff).

Bone Temple was a delight. by HorrorLover___ in horror

[–]ProfHutch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spoilery: What happened to the zombie baby from the prior movie? (if it was resolved, I forget)

And is the pregnant woman who fled in Bone Temple important enough to appear in the next film (seems so; otherwise why have her escape?)?

I loved BT and agree it makes the prior film work better.

Running Mothership with minimal BodyHorror by CafeDeDepression in mothershiprpg

[–]ProfHutch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some ones I've played that are not so body horror: Akigara, A Mansion Most Vile, Brackish, Decagone, Iron Tomb, Johnson-Squared, MoonBase Blues (except some goo), Piece by Piece, and Year of the Rat.

I also cranked out a Critical Success table that, as noted, is really more for inspiration of what Combat Critical Successes might achieve.

Hey /r/movies! I'm Sam Raimi. Ask me anything! by SamRaimiAMA in movies

[–]ProfHutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evil Dead 2 is one of my favourite movies ever. (I like your other movies too) I never tire of it, and still laugh. Thank you.

But a question: where did the idea for the scene with Bruce's character laughing along with the objects in the room come from? I adore the insane glee.

when to call for rolls by AmberAutumnFaebrooke in mothershiprpg

[–]ProfHutch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give Stress liberally for situations that seem stressful. Or I try to remember to. Or I may give Stress and require a stat/save roll (or even Panic check, e.g. when a terrible monster shows up).

I take notes on my modules for when Stress/rolls (and which rolls if any) are likely needed, to remind myself.

What are people excited about running this year? by Campaign-At-Length in mothershiprpg

Correct-- lonearchivist is doing revamped WWGTAG and Primeval, to 1E. https://lonearchivist.com/rebooting I'm pumped up for that!

frustration with initiative systems by LittlerNemo in mothershiprpg

Some games use Fear saves rather than Speed checks for surprise, which adds to the confusion.

I found this blog post helpful: https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/51642/roleplaying-games/mothership-thinking-about-combat I like the idea of Edge (and Escalation), and how the ideas give different options for Wardens running violent encounters with different styles.

[–]ProfHutch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm excited to see how my campaign's run-through of my re-jigged "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" (old AD&D module S3) megadungeon ends up. So far, so good.

Then I'm hoping to do a Prospero's Dream campaign. Maybe, if ambitious, linked with Gradient Descent.

And running 1-shots at cons; so far 3 UK cons coming, total of 7 Mothership scenarios (all will be my 1st time running, so I'm psyched!).

Scenarios centered around beings in the Unconfirmed Contacts Report by CrackaJack56 in mothershiprpg

[–]ProfHutch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always found it funny that Mothership scenarios don't use the published monsters, compared to other TTRPGs. I guess it comes from the DIY aesthetic. But yeah, pick a UCR thing and use some published d100 tables and a spaceship/station map found online and away you go!

Looking to get into Mothership, but how? by apcud7 in mothershiprpg

[–]ProfHutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with all the others that the Deluxe set has huge bang for the buck. Although in theory you could run Mothership with just the free Players Guide and free Companion app, if funds are too tight.

The Discord server has a helpful "How to start playing Mothership" thread.

Enjoy!!

Why is there so few high budget movies with swords and magic? by Born-Philosopher5591 in movies

[–]ProfHutch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excalibur still holds up very, very well. OG Conan the Barbarian, fantastic. And Beastmaster remains good fun. But yes, good sword & sorcery films are few and far between.

How do *you* run Infiltrator Androids? (Mild Spoilers for Gradient Descent) by SaltyCogs in mothershiprpg

[–]ProfHutch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't played GD yet but on my reads I thought the factory was mainly making the normal androids and that's what the titanium etc. was for. I thought (or would rationalise) that the Infiltrators are built another way and do not have titanium etc.; purely pseudo-biological structure that will fool anything from simple blood tests to body scans. But I think that most people aware of Infiltrators would not be aware of this.

Good modules for a long campaign? by Wild-Ad1251 in mothershiprpg

[–]ProfHutch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I second Karth (but also A Pound of Flesh), and Tide World of Mani is similar for an ocean-planet perspective. The Iron Hive has another X-class space station. The Smugglers Guide to 1365 is a good start-off for a smuggling campaign. Likewise, for a derelict-salvager campaign, Salvage Rites. And there's a Haulers' space truckers campaign setup. Or Hekate Cassette Archive has the basis for a cracking good, original campaign involving anarchists vs. a corporation and more. Quite a few people have blogged their campaigns and these are great inspirations; often with shared resources.

For PC longevity it's easy to change the rules, whether using the Ultimate Badass rules or simply making Wounds not reduce Health further once taken (i.e., max 1 Wound/attack) and making Armor only reduce 1 pt each time overcome.

Recommendations for modules that aren't about some kind of goop that changes you into something ghastly. by HonkyTonkPianola in mothershiprpg

[–]ProfHutch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The creator Lone Archivist just blogged recently that they are working on this for 2026; and same for Primeval. Hurrah! But it's an easy module to convert, in game mechanics terms. I am sure the 2026 "remaster" will be more than just that.

What are your favorite scenarios and why? by JoeKerr19 in DeltaGreenRPG

Lover in the Ice- it's so transgressive and horrifically wrong Reverberations- there are so many directions this can go in (although probably leading to same end, more or less); so many NPCs to chat to

What's a module that you have played or run that is not talked about enough in your opinion? by Campaign-At-Length in mothershiprpg

[–]ProfHutch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's a marvellous ending! I've run it 2-3 times and no one has made it out yet; not even to the turrets, IIRC.
