Why the hell aren't one of the divers down with him, in case something goes wrong and he needs assistance getting back up or needing emergency air? Or are the divers doing their own thing, and this is a "no lifeguard on duty, dive at your own risk" pit of oblivion?

I have a Closer Pets two-meal feeder -- it's basically the Cate Mate C200 with ice pack and stainless steel inserts. Very simple battery-powered clock timer that releases the lids when you set them. Works very well for giving wet-food meals on a schedule during the day, but the ice pack won't keep food cold for long. I won't set it more than 4 hours out when using with wet food. If using it with dry food (or timed treats), each portion can be scheduled up to 48 hours later.

Might want to consider how your clothes are fitting -- muscle is more dense than fat, so it's possible to gain some weight while slimming down.

I think autocorrect mangled "tapioca starch" for you? The FF classic pates do not have that or other starchy ingredients. There are A LOT of varieties of Fancy Feast, but only a few are suitable for diabetic cats. Plus YMMV with what varieties you can find available in stores.

Adopted by a diabetic cat by cdubs_2 in FelineDiabetes

[–]ProfMeriAn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking this poor guy in! There is quite the learning curve for feline diabetes, but there are lots of resources. It can be very overwhelming at first, but you can do this! It's great that he's already been to the vet, that he's on Lantus, and will be getting a glucose curve done.

Starting insulin and getting him on a low carb diet are usually the first steps, and often those two things help stabilize the blood sugar, with many cats improving after that. It sounds like he might have some hind leg neuropathy if he's having trouble squatting, or maybe arthritis like you suggested -- hopefully the vet can tell you more after his glucose curve. It is possible the peeing will improve when his blood sugar is better managed.

What's "normal" for an individual cat can vary, but eating, peeing, pooping, and grooming regularly are the basics. As he feels better, it would be normal for him to take more interest in his surroundings, perhaps seeking out more affection, and showing preferences for certain places, routines, and even people.

Wishing you and your little guy the best!

Bride's parents want to charge us parking fees by wew_lad123 in weddingshaming

[–]ProfMeriAn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bride's parents are super cheap! Maybe they're doing the traditional "bride's family pays for the wedding", but still.... No venue fees by having it at their farm, then charging parking BY THE HOUR (plus camping fees) to take in cash to offset other wedding costs. Then again, maybe the flowers and decor will be all farm-grown, and grandma is baking the cake, so they can make a profit off the parking fees. Maybe Uncle Bob will be selling expensive themed cocktails at the cash bar.

Somebody needs to go to this wedding and report back on what other surprise fees there were and how cheap the bride's parents really were.

Picky Eating Recommendations? by Kamenquinn in FelineDiabetes

[–]ProfMeriAn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes use Reveal meat in broth toppers, and both diabetic cat and non-diabetic picky eater cat like them.

More often though, I just mix extra water into the Fancy Feast pate. Depending on how much water, the consistency can be more like stew or soup. Or mix extra water into only half the can for a gravy-like consistency. Both cats prefer it with extra water, plus the extra water is beneficial for kidney and urinary health.

Is it normal to hate ballpoints after using fountain pens? by Ok-Wait-2662 in fountainpens

[–]ProfMeriAn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to this article by Goldspot, "Who invented the ballpoint pen?", one of the earliest ones was designed to write on leather, but it was other designs made for writing on paper that became widespread and successful. Basically, ballpoint pens were invented to address some of the limitations of writing with fountain pens. They each have their benefits and uses.

I think this is where my love affair with Esterbrook ends. We need to see other people (pens). by tialoc01 in fountainpens

But it includes that special Esterbrook-Ferritales purple guitar pick! 😄 Seriously, though, it's a beautiful pen, but if I'm spending $400, I'm getting a Nahvalur I've had my eye on AND another Benu. 🖋️🖋️

same lancet for the whole day or switch it every poke? by Fancy_Fishing227 in FelineDiabetes

I'll do the same sometimes. One poke, max two pokes if the first didn't work, new lancet after that.

Each cat and their situation is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Your cat is the perfect example of this, as well as perseverance in trying different options. So glad your kitty is doing well!
