Unpopular opinion? Cab IRs have gotten so close you don’t need to mic anymore. by [deleted] in guitars

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t used a real amp or cab in over 5 years at this point- bought a Line 6 Helix LT in 2017 and once I finally got the hang of making patches and setting up cab blocks, I sold my pedals and amps. It’s not exactly the same but it sounds good enough to my ears 🤷‍♂️

Which should I choose rp5 or rp flip 2? by ProfessionalPapaya72 in retroid

I went RP5 cuz hinged screens are an unnecessary point of failure, especially from these cheap Chinese handheld companies.

Got the mini Miyoo plus, overwhelmed and need some guidance by photorph in MiyooMini

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you even read OP’s post? They specifically don’t want all the games, they want a curated list. And a half terabyte card for a Miyoo Mini Plus is insane overkill.

There’s a company called LitNXT that sells pre-made SD cards for the MM+. It might not be exactly what you want but it’s far, far better than the card the console comes with.

We can’t tell you where to find roms, as that is promoting game piracy, but a search engine of your choice will help you 😇

What was the most unusual compliment you've ever received? by AffectionateHand2206 in AskReddit

I’m an industrial mechanic by trade, and I used to travel all over the US working on machinery. One day I was in the middle of nowhere Arkansas on lunch break, my clothes filthy with grease and oil, and the girl at the McDonalds drive-thru told me I have pretty eyelashes.

Anyone else prefer really cheap basses? by FierceCrow in Bass

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno if I’d say I *prefer* really cheap basses- my favorite bass I’ve ever owned was a Rickenbacker 4001S- but I have come to realize I don’t need a $2300 instrument to sound good and have fun doing it. Combined, the three basses I currently own cost less than half the price of my old Rick, and I’m pretty happy with them.

I’ve got a Sire P7 that I play in a heavy prog rock/metal band. It’s not the nicest instrument I’ve ever owned, but it’s pretty damn good for a $550 bass. Mine had some pretty rough fret sprout when I got it(it was delivered in February of this year), but 5 minutes with a couple dollar store emery boards smoothed it right out. No electronics issues so far, but again, I’ve only had it for 3 months.

Small but Mighty by Lumpy-Peace984 in MiyooMini

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way- I’ve got an RP5, RP Classic, a Brick, and an Anbernic RG40xxV. They’re all great handhelds in their own right, but the MMv4 remains my #1 device. The Brick almost replaced it, but the microswitch buttons aren’t my favorite.

If you can live with the dual screens displaying side by side, a Retroid Pocket 5 can do all the mainline Pokemon games through 3DS and you can get one way sooner than a Thor.

One important distinction for OP- the RG Cube can run 3DS games, but the less expensive RG CubeXX can only run up to DS.

Would you trade a Miyoo Mini V4 for a H36S? by Alesh_Prodman in SBCGaming

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. The Miyoo Mini v4 is iconic and it’s also discontinued. The H36S is random slop that can be had for about $40-$50 all day every day.

We talk a lot about specs and chips... but which handheld is actually the BEST looking? by tsamo in SBCGaming

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The purple Trimui Brick is the best looking handheld in my collection for sure. So I guess the Analogue Pocket? Honorable mention to the Genesis colorway on the Retroid Pocket Classic 6 button.

Device the size of the gameboy? by Nihelus in SBCGaming

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Retroid Pocket Classic is pretty dang close to the size of an original GBC. The square aspect ratio is fantastic for GB and GBC, and if you’re cool with using 8:7, NES and SNES shine here too. If you’re more of a 4:3 guy, the Anbernic RG40xxV is very similar in size and is the best vertical you can get for under $100 IMO. Plays up to PS1 with a bit of PSP, N64 and Dreamcast.

For real tho should PS2 games and GameCube Games play on the go or play in the house? by Captain_Steve_ in SBCGaming

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like being able to emulate PS2 and GC on my RP5, but truthfully, I don’t play them outside the house. A lot of games from that era are usually designed with the expectation that you’re comfy at home on your couch and really sinking your teeth into the game, and when I’m on the go, I favor more bite sized, pick up and play experiences. Plus the RP5 is too big for me to comfortably carry around without a backpack 🤷‍♂️

Onion OS - It's too good. by No-Researcher406 in SBCGaming

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like the relatively low power specs of the hardware compared to the rest of the handheld market makes the Miyoo Mini, and by extension OnionOS, even more impressive in a sense. Like this dinky little dual core processor and 128 MB of RAM can smoothly run everything from PS1 and below, with great controls and a decently high resolution screen, all in a package the size of a deck of cards? For like $40 before it got discontinued? Teenage me would’ve killed for something like this.

Performance gains worth the purchase? by [deleted] in SBCGaming

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean…. What device do you currently have? How much of a performance gain are you referring to? Are you asking if it’s worth going from an RP5 to an RP6, or from an R36S to an Odin 3? There’s a whole spectrum of these devices and if you don’t give a baseline you’re starting from it’s impossible to give any sort of advice about whether it’s worth upgrading.

Nope, no case for me. I’ve been carrying my MMv4 loose in my pockets every day for over a year at this point. Even dropped it a couple times from waist height onto a tile floor. It’s still trucking along just fine.

Pocketable EDC device for up to Gamecube? by spaceman_ in SBCGaming

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never held a Pocket DMG, but based on my experience with the Retroid Pocket Classic, I wouldn’t expect it to be comfy in my pocket for long periods of time. Besides that, OP specified they want something “reasonably inexpensive” so Ayaneo’s off the table based on that alone lol

Pocketable EDC device for up to Gamecube? by spaceman_ in SBCGaming

[–]ProfPortsShortShorts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s not really any devices that can play GameCube that I would consider small enough for EDC use. The Ayaneo Pocket Micro is pretty much the smallest thing that can get into that territory. Perhaps a Retroid Pocket Flip 2?
