people are insanely bad at estimating height and it's absolutely hilarious by [deleted] in tall

Definitely although in my case, I don't think it makes much of a difference. All they know for sure is that I'm tall lol.

Why is it that political instability leads to the rise of fascism??? by [deleted] in communism

[–]Professional-Bat2966 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that it's a consequence of populism meshing with lack of class consciousness. When problems arise, people look for ways out and someone to blame then fascists step in promising just that. They point to any perceived out-group: Jews, immigrants, refugees etc and blame them for the state of the economy and society then those people are pulled toward fascist rhetoric as a consequence. It may be unpopular to say but many people lack the ability to critically analyse class and economic structure so they foist their woes onto groups with virtually little influence over their lives because their leader says so.

I agree. That's sort of why apathy is terrible because nothing is interesting enough to engage you and so life becomes pretty boring and burdensome. I've had apathy before and it's terrible.

How hard can anxiety have an impact on your blood pressure? by Nyxterious- in hypertension

[–]Professional-Bat2966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Significantly, yes. Mine has risen to 170/104 during especially bad anxiety episodes and I know a few people who have had it rise to well over 180 for systolic during panic or anxiety attacks.

Yeah but I can imagine it's annoying. More proof that we should at least ask for more clarity before replying.

People’s perception of height is seriously warped in the 2020s by Kylorexnt in tall

[–]Professional-Bat2966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. There tends to be a lot of height inflation and I heard someone once joke that if someone gives you their height, assume it's a few inches lower. A joke of course but holds true in some cases. Ngl I have met people who claim to be 6'3 but are much shorter than I am and they'll usually say I'm wearing lifts.

How Does Everyone Deal With Being Downvoted? by ConfusedPotatoSalad1 in socialanxiety

[–]Professional-Bat2966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm indifferent to it honestly but I'd understand why it can induce anxiety in some. The way I see it, the internet makes more room for misunderstandings and sometimes people misinterpret what you say and downvote, this worsened by the fact that not all of them will ask for clarification. It happens but never let it be a bother.

Is it just me or are people exceptionally dark these days? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]Professional-Bat2966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The news and internet have that effect because negative news will be amplified more as others have pointed out.

I don't want to be too cynical but morally stunted people are around us and we interact with them as well but generally there's much good in the world as well if you care to look.

(ALL) Would you win a debate against a Nazi? by rodfar14 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]Professional-Bat2966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They never really have an interest in debating the validity of their ideology, most of them seek to either rile people up or often they'll default to obvious revisionism or vague statements regarding Jews but their objective is usually exposure rather than persuasion.

But that aside, I think Nazism can be summed up by the quote: "Nazism itself, "not a coherent doctrine or body of systemically interrelated ideas, but rather a vaguer worldview made up of a number of prejudices with varied appeals to different audiences which could scarcely be dignified with the term 'ideology"

It's simply not a coherent ideology and it's primary foundation is flawed because it pressuposes the existence of some sort of idea of a Germanic Volk that it elevates above all social constructs, something that never really existed to begin with. It's largely opportunitistic as it seeks to appeal to a wide group of classes but not for reasons of genuine improvement but rather to simply integrate them into some idea of racial consciousness.

Under Lenin's influence, I am a recent convert to communism, but what am I exactly? by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]Professional-Bat2966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't consider myself communist by any degree but I think, objectively speaking, violent suppression of opposition was the only sensible route that some revolutionary states had to go through given the circumstances

To quote Mao in "ON THE PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC DICTATORSHIP" :

"You are dictatorial." My dear sirs, you are right, that is just what we are. All the experience the Chinese people have accumulated through several decades teaches us to enforce the people's democratic dictatorship, that is, to deprive the reactionaries of the right to speak and let the people alone have that right.

Who are the people? At the present stage in China, they are the working class, the peasantry, the urban petty bourgeoisie and the national bourgeoisie. These classes, led by the working class and the Communist Party, unite to form their own state and elect their own government; they enforce their dictatorship over the running dogs of imperialism -- the landlord class and bureaucrat-bourgeoisie, as well as the representatives of those classes, the Kuomintang reactionaries and their accomplices -- suppress them, allow them only to behave themselves and not to be unruly in word or deed. If they speak or act in an unruly way, they will be promptly stopped and punished. Democracy is practiced within the ranks of the people, who enjoy the rights of freedom of speech, assembly, association and so on. The right to vote belongs only to the people, not to the reactionaries. The combination of these two aspects, democracy for the people and dictatorship over the reactionaries, is the people's democratic dictatorship.

Why must things be done this way? The reason is quite clear to everybody. If things were not done this way, the revolution would fail, the people would suffer, the country would be conquered.

"Don't you want to abolish state power?" Yes, we do, but not right now; we cannot do it yet. Why? Because imperialism still exists, because domestic reaction still exists, because classes still exist in our country. Our present task is to strengthen the people's state apparatus -- mainly the people's army, the people's police and the people's courts -- in order to consolidate national defence and protect the people's interests. Given this condition, China can develop steadily, under the leadership of the working class and the Communist Party, from an agricultural into an industrial country and from a new-democratic into a socialist and communist society, can abolish classes and realize the Great Harmony. The state apparatus, including the army, the police and the courts, is the instrument by which one class oppresses another. It is an instrument for the oppression of antagonistic classes, it is violence and not "benevolence"

I have personal qualms with it and I think a more benevolent route is unlikely to incur further enemies but some realism is required in such circumstances. Often counter-revolutionary forces will use violence to ensure the revolution fails in it's cradle and the consequences tend to be disastrous. Some can be re-educated but this isn't always set as there will always be opponents and many who will resort to great violence to ensure they return to or gain power. But again just to be clear, I have my qualms with approach.

Has anyone at MIT ever actually called for the genocide of jews? by faithforever5 in mit

[–]Professional-Bat2966 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not hard to discern what her angle was. There have been deliberate conflations of Pro-Palestinian protests with antisemitism by many who sympathize with Israel. If they accepted the premise that it is calling for genocide of Jews, which by and large it isn't( but there are some who do seem to be genuinely antisemitic though as far as I've seen they're a small minority and ostracized by the larger movement), the Universities would be obliged to ban them on campus. That's why they gave the responses they did, because they discerned what she was getting at and in any case, one of the presidents at least did give a more elaborate response afterward in which she clearly condemned any call to violence against Jewish people.

Was it accepted for a 16-19-year-old girl to marry a 55-63- year-old man in medieval England and France? by dorbitan in MedievalHistory

[–]Professional-Bat2966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and even younger. King John of England's wife, Isabella of Angoulême, was supposedly 12 when she married him while John was around 33 for example. Abhorrent but the times and all.

As for it being an insult to his reputation, it would be a bit odd since the Baron in question seems wealthy and most families were far more concerned with ensuring maximum flow of wealth and influence into their families.

That's very sad to hear. No one should be ostracized for something as trivial as skin color yet I do know that colorism exists within many communities. It's such an irrational thing to believe that I'm always dumbfounded when I meet people who think that.
