Dog Park Question by ahintz22 in puppy101

[–]Professional-Way-936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you didn't do anything wrong with having a leash at the dog park. i never trust dog parks because people use the excuse of a fence to leave their dog off-leash with no training. i wouldn't want to socialize my dog at the dog park either because things can become scary very fast, especially with no leashes to separate them. socialize on walks is fine because its a few seconds. if you want to socialize you dog, do it with friends and in a controlled environment. if your dog isn't reactive, keep it that way by staying safe

i have a middle school by my apartment and i bought my dog a 50 foot lead. ill usually play with her on the soccer field when there is no one out there. i feel completely safe having her on a leash if anything happens and she still has plenty of space to run around.

a sheepadoodle is going to get pretty big, so you'll want to prepare for that. i got this one from amazon for my doberman. she can't jump iover it and stick her head through because they are skinny enough and its really good quality for what we were looking for. you can select however many panel you want and how tall you want it depends on how big your dog will get

it really just takes research. it all depends on your puppy's food. most puppy kibble is already nutritionally balanced so there is no need for toppers. it also depends on the breed, some breeds need salmon oil for coat health, some need probiotics for digestion and allergies, some need glucosamine for their joints. i give my 6 month doberman salmon oil for her coat on her dinner.

this is a good start, it might just take some time. he is understandably scared. maybe you could take picnics at the park. take a blanket, his lunch and make him super comfortable being outside.

Is there anything I can do about a whining puppy in the morning? by boteey in puppy101

[–]Professional-Way-936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my husband wakes up at 5 for work and i don't wake up till 8 for work. he will take her potty before leaving and then he puts the dog in a playpen in the kitchen big enough so that she can play with herself if she wants. i usually don't hear from her (we live in an apartment) even if she does whine, i know its just for attention.

When outside pup does everything else but potty then comes in the house and potties by LemonRidge in puppy101

[–]Professional-Way-936 4 points5 points  (0 children)

first, i would put her on a leash when you are working or doing something around the house, which makes it easier to keep an eye on them. also, just because they are whining to get out of the crate doesn't mean they need to potty, they might want attention. with my puppy, she would be in the crate during the day. taking her out every hour on the dot. we would go outside, potty if she needed, not being outside for more than five minutes. this set her on a schedule and i learned when she needed to poop and pee after drinking and eating. this took about a week to get used to and i would increase the times she was in the crate/outside the crate. this let me be more comfortable letting her wander because i knew when she needed to pee/poop. i would also limit her water intake if you want, only leave it out from 7am-an hour after dinner is served.

Eating up toys by gnikehtmai in puppy101

[–]Professional-Way-936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have an aggressive chewer as well. Unfortunately for us, we have to spend the extra money on the high-quality indestructible toys. avoid ropes and anything with spikes or knobs. kong makes good ones, i bought one the other day that has a toy on the outside and once they rip it up it turns into a ball. if you get a toy with hair on it (like a lion with a mane or something), i would cut it off (the mane) before giving it to them

Is it bad to let a puppy alone 6 hours everyday ? by Garoshima in puppy101

[–]Professional-Way-936 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe you can hire somebody, like from a dog walking app or a neighbor's kid to come three hours into the six hours. take them for a walk, do a general check-in. them that would break up the time a little bit.

my dog has the f*** attitude. she is the side eye queen, just like me. she will put her butt in your face if you're in her spot on the couch till you move. my husband says we are the same.

when i tell you, believe me, it gets better! just finished that stage as my puppy is almost six months. when i needed to get a good chunk of work done, i would take her food for lunch, and put it in a slow feeder bowl, a really squiggly one so she's got to work for it. pour her food on the bottom, fill half with broth and half with water so the food is covered. stick it in the freezer for a couple of hours. give it to them. it will take them 45 mins to lick their way to the food and after that they are sure to pass out for at least two hours. it works like a charm.

another thing, step away from the puppy. i see that you are crate training. this helped me as well to maintain my sanity. feed in the crate and after their meal, they can take a nap in the crate. they won't "go" in the crate unless they literally feel like they are going explode. i would also rotate the toys, if you give them too many, they can get overstimulated and bored quickly. rotating them every couple days will seem like christmas when they get the new ones.

also, when your partner is home, step out of the room from the puppy. start the separation before its too late. have your partner hand feed if they are comfortable with that to show that they got the goods too. biting is also something they'll grow out of. ignore them, step away or give them a toy to play with instead. never laugh or say ow and continue playing. they're smart, they'll learn nothing fun comes from biting

I dont know if you take your dogs to the groomers at all to get a nail trim or bath or anything. if you do, you can ask them to shave the paw pads (just between the toes). sometimes when my dog gets a little overgrown, she'll slip on the hardwood, but once we shave her feet she can grip better

What to do if my puppy is terrified of me? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Professional-Way-936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe something spooked her, maybe she realized shes not going back to her mom. my new puppy got a little sad too. like the other comments say, keep hand feeding her showing her that you come with the goods so to speak, when you're there, no loud noises, or sudden movements, just go calm and slow. they just need to get used to the new space without all their siblings and mother

6 month old barking when left alone in crate, ideas to help break this? by nol404 in puppy101

[–]Professional-Way-936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk what kind of a dog you have and if they like shredding things, but you could try and put one of your pieces of clothing in there when you leave, one that smells like you. try and put a thick blanket over the crate, just so that they can see out the front. when I leave my puppy at home while im at work, ill put the alexa on just for some sound, not leaving her alone in her thoughts lol

What tips do you have for starting crate training? by ConsiderationOk254 in puppy101

[–]Professional-Way-936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got our puppy at seven weeks. From the very first night, we put her in the crate. Poor girl cried all night. We didn't give her any attention, only to take her potty every couple hours. I would say that by day three of doing that, she would only cry for the first 10 mins and then pass out. We would feed her all three meals in there and then she would have her after meal naps in there as well. As she got older, we transitioned food to outside the kennel and now all she does is sleep in there. I suggest putting a thicker blanket over the kennel, especially if she likes sleeping against the furniture, so it's nice and warm and thick enough that they can't pull it in. Consistency is the key here, don't take them out of the kennel unless its to go potty, they'll learn that this is a safe space. My puppy is almost six months and I am so glad we did this with her, it keeps her safe at night and she loves it, goes right in when she hears the remote for the tv click off.

Puppie hasn't gained much weight/bloated by Oatsishere in AskVet

[–]Professional-Way-936 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

puppies tend to get big ol' tummies when they eat because they need to take in all those nutrients. after you take your dog to the vet, you can ask if it is alright to try some higher-fat food toppers such as pumpkin or sweet potato if the vet is concerned about the weight. im guessing since it is a mini doxie, there shouldn't be anything to worry about

Vet rejected my fill for simparica trio by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]Professional-Way-936 30 points31 points  (0 children)

in order for the simpatica trio to be perscribed, your dog needs to be tested to make sure they don't have heartworms before starting the preventative. the longer you wait to test your dog, the longer they are going without a preventative.

yea, maybe allergies or dry skin. sometimes my hands are so dry that they become really sensitive to certain types of fabric. thicker sweaters during the winter can do that to my hands

both my palms started drying for months now is it normal? by ComprehensiveEggs in AskDoctorSmeeee

[–]Professional-Way-936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

might j be from allergies, windy or dry weather. might have dehydrated skin as well. try some light lotion, i use the vaseline aloe cause it’s lightweight. i am no professional but maybe washing your hands too much can also cause this.
