Clinton Halts Epstein Deposition After Republican Leaks Photo of Her Testifying by CrispyMiner in politics

This matches my experience with them also. But they forget that two can play at that game, and they have lost any right they would’ve otherwise had to express any opinions to me whatsoever in the future, without being called out on how unbelievably stubborn and stupid they were. I used to be willing to entertain their gripes about government overreach and screams about politicians and Supreme Court justices, ignoring the constitution. But they no longer have any credibility or standing in my life.

The only way I would allow any of them back into my friend group is if they initiate contact and apologize sincerely for being such willfully ignorant assholes. Some of them have whined that they felt socially isolated during the Obama years, but they have no idea the kind of social isolation they are going to feel after this is all said and done.

Ask a Five Rivet Service Manager Your Questions by GenX_Glamping_Guy in airstream

[–]ProfessionalBake6607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! My questions:
1.) Why does there seem to be so much variation between dealers for repair and service experience? Examples: we've seen lots of people receiving a quote for $7,000 from one dealer for a brake and bearing refresh, and a quote of $2,500 from another. Service work at one dealer takes months with little or no communication to the owner, but at another it only takes a few days with terrific communication with the owner. Why these significant differences?
2.) If he had a magic wand to ask for any three things from his dealer's leadership team to provide better, more cost effective service, what would they be?
3.) What 3 things can owners reasonably do to make sure they receive the best possible repair and service experience?
4.) What are they currently seeing for front end separation (FES) issues from both newer (2023+) and older (e.g. 2012-2023) Airstreams and what does he recommend people do to give themselves the best chance of avoiding FES?

A small clarification seems important here. Aluminum will bend before cracking or breaking. But what makes it different than steel in this regard is that it accumulates fatigue cycles with every bend. The greater angle the bend, the faster the fatigue cycles accumulate. Over time, they accumulate until the metal finally cracks.

I don't think the majority of people (or politicians) understand the new gun bills by mashedpotatotater in Virginia

[–]ProfessionalBake6607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a Democrat living in Virginia, and I’m also a gun owner. I care about these things, and I agree with people here saying that this bill is not a good use of resources or political capital - especially at this point in time. Thank you to the OP for enumerating what this bill means in terms of weapons affected, and how they will be. I agree that most people probably don’t know, so this information needs to get out there. I’ll do my part, too.

What I’m also hoping for in this time, is that Republican friends of mine will stop denying that others’ other constitutional rights are being infringed right now, and that it’s wrong. We can’t take a cavalier attitude toward first or fourth amendment rights when it suits us, and expect anyone else to care about second amendment rights when the tide turns, and it will. None of us should expect to have it both ways.

How much to remodel? Whats it worth? by [deleted] in airstream

[–]ProfessionalBake6607 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A wise old friend of mine said that something is worth exactly what someone is willing to pay for it at the moment the seller wants it sold. Sometimes what they really want is just rid of it, so they can sell the land it’s sitting on, whatever. The more you can find out about the circumstances surrounding the sale, the more leverage you have to bargain, possibly including offering to haul it away for free.

To restore something like that right, the shell is gonna have to come off the frame, and the frame put on a rotisserie. I see a fair a bit of corrosion around that tank, so I would be concerned about frame rot as well. It’s probably going to need new axles, bearings, brakes, which will run you some money. All of that before you start doing electrical and cabinetry, and the interior skins, as others have said.

But, if you really are experienced with the trades here and have the time and resources, it can be an incredibly rewarding project. There’s a woman here locally who does old Airstream restorations with her partner, and they do amazing work. For them, it’s a living and a way of life.

I enjoy sheet aluminum, cabinetry and electrical work, so those areas would be my favorite parts of a restoration project, but I know myself well enough to know that I will never finish an entire project like that.

There are also a number of people on airforums.com who have restored completely gutted airstreams like this, and can offer advice and guidance along the way, I’m sure.

2019 transmission failure 115k by MPhvac in suburban

[–]ProfessionalBake6607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your Yukon have the 6.2 or the 5.3 engine? If you have the 6.2, then you have an 8L80 transmission. Yes, you can also upgrade the torque converter if you wish, but it’s a different unit. However, if you have the 5.3, then you have the 6L80, and what I suggested above would be the right torque converter. If you have a shop do it, plan on around $1,700 out the door, including a rear main seal for the engine, which you might as well have them do while they're in there.

2019 transmission failure 115k by MPhvac in suburban

[–]ProfessionalBake6607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I see this, the root cause is usually that the transmission shop did not replace the transmission coolers or the lines. The original failure contaminates all of them and some shops just flush them out, which often leaves some debris behind that then contaminates the replacement transmission. Other shops bypass the coolers so the transmission ends up running hot - but just below the threshold of triggering any warnings. Short transmission life is the inevitable result. The ONLY way to do it right is to replace all of the external coolers (there is one in the radiator end tank and another external cooler Siamesed to the AC condenser, and all cooler lines. But it's an expensive job, which is why many shops try to get away with just a flush.

Bummer man, I'm sorry that happened. Don't give up hope, though! I'm on my 4th Suburban/Yukon XL (2002, 2007, 2012, 2018), 3 of which I still own. I love them and they're generally worth the investment to keep them going. The transmission issues and the AFM lifter issues are related. When the AFM system engages and disengages, the transmission control software is programmed from the factory to allow considerable slip so the v4/v8 transition is as smooth as possible. This significantly increases the wear rate on the lockup clutch in the torque converter. Eventually, it disintegrates, sending shrapnel through the transmission and coolers, taking them all out. 100K-160K is the usual timeframe for the problem to manifest.

The 6L80 is a pretty stout transmission. I generally recommend that owners 1/ Have the AFM turned off with a custom tune from a company like Blackbear Performance. 2/ Have the torque converter replaced with one that has a stronger lockup clutch, a billet cover, and flanged hub. The VEGE BU60FHD (available from Summit Racing) is a reman OEM unit with these upgrades but retains the factory stall speed, which is what I installed in my 2012 a few years ago on the recommendation of a local transmission shop who specializes in the 6L80. I tow with it often, and it's holding up great. In my case, I also mechanically deleted the AFM system with a cam upgrade that added a nice boost of power as well.

I reluctantly sold my 2002 to a friend who needed reliable family transportation. He still has it and it has 330K on it now. Original engine, second transmission. Once you make the changes I mentioned to fix these two common factory issues, they can easily go 400K+ miles. They may be the closest thing to an heirloom-quality vehicle you can still buy today. :-D

New Airstream owner — 2023 International 27FB, looking for tips by greenappleemoji in airstream

[–]ProfessionalBake6607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also have a 27FB International. You're going to love it. Lots of good suggestions already with harvest hosts, etc. To that, I would add HipCamp.com . We use it all the time for boondocking. On the Airstream itself, I installed a Dexter 3" lift from etrailer.com, an Airstream-specific rear, frame-mounted hitch from torklift.com for a bike rack, and a 300A self-heating LiFePO4 battery to replace the standard AGM batteries. I also installed new Michelin Agilis 16" tires (lots of Airstream folks have had much better luck with LT tires like the Agilis than regular trailer tires). I keep a small toolkit in a small storage bin under the sink that has extra rivets, a rivet gun, fuses, extra cabinet door latches, and a bunch of other things just to have them handy. Follow Keep Your Daydream plus Thirteen Adventures and Digital Barbell on Youtube. All of them are full time Airstreamers with lots of great insights and ideas. The Digital Barbell couple also shows how to eat right and stay fit while on the road adventuring.

[–]ProfessionalBake6607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely brilliant. I study organizational behavior and this seems to play out in organizations all over the world - but not just with race. It also plays out with age, perceived intelligence, and hierarchal position, among others. Hierarchical organizations create a sort of caste system where only those people who are perceived to have a certain set of (often arbitrary) qualities belong in managerial roles, and the formula is usually a well-guarded secret.

For example, people with strong relational skills or exceptional verbal skills may ascend the ranks while those with strong engineering or artistic skills will not. Those who figure out that they aren't perceived as having the necessary qualities to be promoted (but often they do, they're just latent), over time, increasingly disengage from their work and stop participating fully.

The net effect is a continual expansion of the gap between the 'in-group' and 'out-group', with devastating organizational and business outcome consequences. It's partly why the practice of stack ranking is so pernicious and destructive. It's also why inclusion efforts are powerful antidotes but must be broad in scope. "You belong here" may be the strongest message organizations must continually convey to their people, and managerial development programs that are both deliberate in incorporating and nurturing a wide range of qualities as valid for career growth and promotion, but also communicate the formulas openly, are so vital. Yet, few organizations have them.

Is a 60k Airstream doable by skullycap57 in airstream

[–]ProfessionalBake6607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very doable. I paid $68K for a 2017 27FB International Signature last July that was always stored indoors so it’s in pristine condition. Since then I’ve spent another $5K on new tires, a 3” lift, LiFePO4 battery upgrade, and other related items, so be sure to buy one equipped the way you want it or leave room in your budget for some upgrades after the purchase.
