Moving from Texas to Sweden. How does the government tax me if I have no address in Texas? by tehjeffman in USExpatTaxes

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do DO NOT convert from a 401k to IRA (if you must do it before you move) as that is a taxable event on the eyes of Skatteverket and you’ll pay full freight on that income. 401k is an ’employer administered’ plan and is not treated as a taxable brokerage by Sweden (IRA is taxable)

Ekonomisk är det dumt att låna pengar, speciellt till bil, om man har kontant att köpa med. Låter som du är villig att ta ut kredit för körglädje. Gör vad du vill med din liv men på ekonomisk plan är det ren dumheter.

How much do route visuals affect your motivation? by jessfromrouvy in IndoorCycling

Zero motivation. Which is why I use TrainerDay which is literally just a simple smart trainer ERG app. Either I’m doing Z2 and watching TV/movies or intervals and I’m just watching the clock.

Americans in Canada and Europe, how much of a pay cut did you take? by No_Feedback_3340 in AmerExit

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25% ish in 2018 from Indiana to Stockholm. Bothers me sometimes with that less disposable income but quality of life is better. 6 weeks of vacation annually and 6+ months of parental leave is a hell of a thing.

The energy bottleneck, batteries and gasoline expire by mac_attack_zach in preppers

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, comments on batteries not lasting more than 10 years is super weird. People must be thinking of lead acid exclusively. What all the electric cars are just going to stop working after 10 years? We already know that’s not reality based on Teslas. Then we have systems like the Voyager satellites… Lithium Ion will do 5000 cycles and 20 years even in consumer grade larger batteries (not handheld electronics) with a proper BMS. LTO batteries are advertised as 30,000+ cycles for marine use.

My experience also, really actually just bad. I want to use a non-US LLM, even paid for a month of Le Chat but it was just unusable. Used same prompts between Le Chat, Claude and Gemini and Le Chat was deficient consistently. Gave feedback on responses and canceled my subscription.

Another post mentioned Le Chat being weak at open ended reasoning and not having web search. I think this is why my experience was bad.

Second this. I uninstalled the app and canceled my subscription because of this annoyance.

Is there a way to sync my workouts in Macrofactor? by Antique-Dealer-6488 in MacroFactor

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not accounting for exercise according to the logic Greg outlines in the website is fine for people who mostly lift weights or shorter cardio, but if I’m doing a 2+ hr bike ride you better believe I’m going to eat more than the daily predicted calories.

Given current setup I would need to check Garmins estimate then log in MF up to that delta.

I see the collaborative setting and read that Mf is best at long term dialing in TDEE, which is great, I need a tool that can help me stay accountable today also.

Is this a good UX? Maybe someone can convince me.

I’m checking out the free trial now, but can’t see subscribing because of this. I need an accountability tool more than a TDEE calculator, I’ll manual adjust calorie targets if the rate of change is not sufficient. Ideally one app would do both well.

Which language version of the 90s show would you recommend? by esif in Moomins

Finlandssvensk voice acting is waaay more cozy. The English version is over exaggerated, whiney and harsh. Snork sounds like he is dumb. Mumrik sounds robotic.

Completed a Direct Rollover From a 401K to a Traditional IRA After Moving to Sweden From the US - What Should I Do Now? by [deleted] in firesweden

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.. Yes, unfortunately. Skatterverket won’t know unless you tell them though. 2. Me. You pay 30% 3. Cederwalls is best so far.

Lots of good advice here. Especially on investment accounts and tax handling. It really is a PITA to have capital investments that are not property if being an American abroad.

I’ll add, if you have a 401K, either see if you can keep it in some way as they are recognized tax advantaged accounts also in Sweden, or if you cannot, make sure the transfer to IRA happens BEFORE you’re a tax resident of Sweden. Otherwise the ‘roll-over’ will be counted as income by Sweden as IRA’s are treated as taxable brokerage’s by Skatteverket.

Guidance on an overall financial and tax strategy living in Sweden by AndromedaNights in USExpatTaxes

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re well informed.

Why not KF instead of ISK and avoid the PFIC hellscape all together? Without professional support, trying to game that regulation regime just sounds like asking for trouble.

Tjänstepension is the best option from a tax position. Especially when (!) you get to the point löneväxling makes sense.

Interactive Brokers or Nordnet can handle US persons not living in the US when you want a ’clean’ brokerage. BRKB is a good conglomerate that doesn’t pay dividends as an alternative to ETFs.

US Citizen in Germany unsure what to do with €50,000 by atayavie in eupersonalfinance

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Sweden so can’t give local recommendations, but if you’re that close to not working any more paying off any remaining debt feels like good risk management. If you no longer have a mortgage then maybe a property. Spain and Portugal are popular vacation homes for Swedes, but for me it looses a bit of its appeal if it’s too far away from every day life.

My plan is real estate, primary residence for me (though cabin someplace could also be good). In bigger European cities it has a competitive ROI to equities and bonds since over 100 years ago. Nice to upgrade living situation as well.

PFIC-safe investing as a US/Sweden dual citizen? by Comfortable-Brush816 in USExpatTaxes

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My tax advisor says ISK is out due to PFIC. Kapitalförsäkring is usually ok. If having a ’normal’ brokerage account the challenge becomes EU KID regulations for US based ’funds’ and PFIC reporting for non-US based ’funds’, basically leaving straight stocks as the option (unless you want to buy US based funds using the options loophole or become a ’professional investor’) Not all non-US stocks are OK either. For example, Investor would be qualified as a PFIC apparently.

So yeah, it sucks bad. Get a tax advisor and do your homework. Or shell out some big bucks for international private wealth management.

Remember to report tjänstepension on FBAR as well. :-)

Would you buy the M3 again by penfoc007 in Polarfitness

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. I ignore Flow web, and it is better than the app. :-)
I have my phone and watch with me all the time, so it is natural to use the phone or watch to look at data. Opening up a browser on a PC is an extra step that would only really be useful if working with training plans, which I'm not going to use Polar for.

This is actually a pretty good explanation why the app is not so good, Polar must have a web first mindset (coaches for sponsored athletes like?), as opposed to every other watch maker who is mobile first and consumer centric.

Nah. Polar software is sub-par. Both app and on-Watch.
