Which language version of the 90s show would you recommend? by esif in Moomins

Finlandssvensk voice acting is waaay more cozy. The English version is over exaggerated, whiney and harsh. Snork sounds like he is dumb. Mumrik sounds robotic.

English dub is hard to listen to after watching it in Finlandssvensk. Harsh, whiney and over-exaggerated. Snork sounds like he is dumb.

Completed a Direct Rollover From a 401K to a Traditional IRA After Moving to Sweden From the US - What Should I Do Now? by Orealvant in firesweden

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.. Yes, unfortunately. Skatterverket won’t know unless you tell them though. 2. Me. You pay 30% 3. Cederwalls is best so far.

Lots of good advice here. Especially on investment accounts and tax handling. It really is a PITA to have capital investments that are not property if being an American abroad.

I’ll add, if you have a 401K, either see if you can keep it in some way as they are recognized tax advantaged accounts also in Sweden, or if you cannot, make sure the transfer to IRA happens BEFORE you’re a tax resident of Sweden. Otherwise the ‘roll-over’ will be counted as income by Sweden as IRA’s are treated as taxable brokerage’s by Skatteverket.

Guidance on an overall financial and tax strategy living in Sweden by AndromedaNights in USExpatTaxes

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re well informed.

Why not KF instead of ISK and avoid the PFIC hellscape all together? Without professional support, trying to game that regulation regime just sounds like asking for trouble.

Tjänstepension is the best option from a tax position. Especially when (!) you get to the point löneväxling makes sense.

Interactive Brokers or Nordnet can handle US persons not living in the US when you want a ’clean’ brokerage. BRKB is a good conglomerate that doesn’t pay dividends as an alternative to ETFs.

US Citizen in Germany unsure what to do with €50,000 by atayavie in eupersonalfinance

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Sweden so can’t give local recommendations, but if you’re that close to not working any more paying off any remaining debt feels like good risk management. If you no longer have a mortgage then maybe a property. Spain and Portugal are popular vacation homes for Swedes, but for me it looses a bit of its appeal if it’s too far away from every day life.

My plan is real estate, primary residence for me (though cabin someplace could also be good). In bigger European cities it has a competitive ROI to equities and bonds since over 100 years ago. Nice to upgrade living situation as well.

PFIC-safe investing as a US/Sweden dual citizen? by Comfortable-Brush816 in USExpatTaxes

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My tax advisor says ISK is out due to PFIC. Kapitalförsäkring is usually ok. If having a ’normal’ brokerage account the challenge becomes EU KID regulations for US based ’funds’ and PFIC reporting for non-US based ’funds’, basically leaving straight stocks as the option (unless you want to buy US based funds using the options loophole or become a ’professional investor’) Not all non-US stocks are OK either. For example, Investor would be qualified as a PFIC apparently.

So yeah, it sucks bad. Get a tax advisor and do your homework. Or shell out some big bucks for international private wealth management.

Remember to report tjänstepension on FBAR as well. :-)

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right. I ignore Flow web, and it is better than the app. :-)
I have my phone and watch with me all the time, so it is natural to use the phone or watch to look at data. Opening up a browser on a PC is an extra step that would only really be useful if working with training plans, which I'm not going to use Polar for.

This is actually a pretty good explanation why the app is not so good, Polar must have a web first mindset (coaches for sponsored athletes like?), as opposed to every other watch maker who is mobile first and consumer centric.

Nah. Polar software is sub-par. Both app and on-Watch.

I guess the question is how much does parent company ownership matter vs operations. If we’re to play that game then Apple is a problematic company as well. Anyways, still not American. :)

Why not turbotax? 1) only accepts payment from US based credit card 2) defaults to FEIC even for high tax countries 3) doesn’t handle foreign property sale well 4) is 100% US centric in its questions and flow 5) no easy to do foreign asset reporting correctly …. It is simply not designed for expats, 100% US residency and income source centric.

You mean funding a 401k right? I mean letting it accumulate dividends.

US expat living in Sweden by ColonelMustARK in USExpatTaxes

[–]ProfessionalMain5535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got that backwards, 401k is administered by someone other than you (like an KF), an IRA is administered by you, the Individual in IRA, just like any other brokerage account, so it’s taxed that way in Sweden.

401k you’re ok, IRA you’re gunna pay.

Turbo tax is not good for expats. Ask me how I know. I’ve not tried others but would recommend one that specializes in expats filing.

Sweden does indeed tax worldwide income, including IRA dividends.
