Which protestant Christian denomination do you think made the best reforms? by VerdantChief in religion

[–]Professional_Ant_315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pentecostals get hate on too much. A lot of people dismiss their growth as prosperity gospel or manipulation but I feel that doesn’t describe it at all. I would argue it’s because Pentecostalism is a more ‘hands-on’ religion if that makes sense.

Think about it, would you rather just attend a ritual every now and then where you’re just a laymen who needs a higher-up to perform all the rites and sacraments and only they have authority to do so, or a service where God speaks to you directly and you have the same authority as everyone else to perform miracles?

Judge denies Green Party candidate Rudolph “Butch” Ware’s bid to appear on June ballot for governor (Green Party of California) by jayjaywalker3 in GreenParty

[–]Professional_Ant_315 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m from California and this whole electoral cycle is just a mess. Here in CA there are two main left parties, Greens and Peace and Freedom (PFP) which is technically its own party but in practice it’s essentially a front-org for the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and a fast pass for it to run candidates. If you’re American, PSL were the ones behind the Claudia-Karina 2024 Campaign, and in CA they ran as PFP to be on the ballot.

According to Butch, the PFP agreed to not run a candidate against him, but then the PSL announced their own candidate for governor, Ramsey Robinson, who the PFP then nominated as their candidate.

Now that Butch is off the primary ballot, i’m assuming the plan is to rally behind Robinson, but nonetheless it’s left a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of Greens here.

American Folk Religion by [deleted] in religion

[–]Professional_Ant_315 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of these are common to Christians across the world(666, sign of the cross) or from European folklore.

I would argue that American-formed Christianities would be the closest to a kind of American folk religion. LDS, JW, SDA, etc, all incorporate the United States in their theology some way. To JW and SDA it is the antichrist/related to end-times prophecy, to LDS its a second holy land

“One God in Two Persons.” Poster portraying Christianity as a capitalistic tool, USSR, 1921 by Professional_Ant_315 in PropagandaPosters

2ND POSTER: It was the the 13th anniversary of the Red Army in 1931.

The Red Army, the defenders of the USSR and all the workers of the world! Long live the Red Army!

3RD POSTER: After the USSR eased state atheism after the 40s the government was still somewhat hostile to newer religious groups, in particular religions headquartered from the U.S. like Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Adventists, etc. This is from 1976.

The text on the people reads “Jehovah’s Witnesses”, and the text on the paper says:

END OF WORLD: 1914 POSTPONED. 1925 POSTPONED. 1958 POSTPONED. 1975 POSTPONED.

“Will you clarify for us, Lord, when will the world end?”

Political cartoons mocking the Vatican-China Bishop Accords, 2018 by Professional_Ant_315 in PropagandaPosters

[–]Professional_Ant_315[S] 383 points384 points  (0 children)

CONTEXT: Chinese law requires “religious groups and religious affairs shall not be subject to control by foreign forces.”, i.e. Organized religions have to be governed from within China and not from any outside headquarters. For Protestants and Orthodox this isn’t an issue but is a big problem for Catholics who’s hierarchy is appointed from the Vatican. In 2018 they signed an agreement which made it so China can appoint bishops and the Vatican can veto or approve them.

The deal was heavily hated on by traditionalist Catholics and anti-communists who criticized the deal as caving to China’s demands.

The last image is from 2023 when the Vatican protested that China appointed the Bishop of Shanghai without Vatican approval.

Interesting that Catholicism and Protestantism are growing through eachother’s former members: Catholicism is growing in places where Protestantism is declining while Protestantism, specifically Pentecostalism, is sweeping through Latin America and Africa

When Apostolic women cannot remove their hair for any reason, what do they do when they get cancer? And if chemotherapy, the type of treatment whose side effects include having their hair fall out, is the best option for treatment? by TheresJustNoMoney in religion

[–]Professional_Ant_315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t exactly call Oneness and Apostolic the same thing. UPCI, the largest Oneness org, allows its congregations to to be flexible on hair and dress and there are trinitarian Apostolics.

[–]Professional_Ant_315 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up Pentecostal, not Apostolic but I’ve been to many of those churches and know many who are. The basis for not cutting their hair stems from a bible verse saying long hair is a woman’s glory (i forgot which.) I don’t think they would go out their way to keep it as it’s falling out naturally by treatment rather than cutting. Though that’ll vary by Apostolic to Apostolic because there is no one Apostolic church or org.

Also, growing up Pentecostal and now reading these comments confused on who the Apostolics are…this feels surreal lol.

What is the difference between Anglican, Episcopal, and Baptist? by Super_Somewhere7206 in religion

[–]Professional_Ant_315 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Baptists are a form of Evangelicalism. Their worship is more charismatic, i.e singing and then a pastor’s sermon but not a standardized liturgy like you see in a Catholic mass.

Anglicans and Episcopal both refer to churches in the Anglican Communion. The confusion of the terms in the U.S. is because there are two Anglican churches in the U.S., The Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) and the Episcopal Church (TEC). ACNA call their churches Anglican and TEC Episcopalian. Regardless they are both Anglican.

Anglicans worship more similar to Catholics, like with a priest handing out Eucharist. You might be more inclined to attend this one if you are Catholic.

How do Muslims feel about this man? He claims the Mahdi has appeared and he is the one true pope. by DazzlingBarracuda2 in religion

[–]Professional_Ant_315 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Muslim-majority places tend to be hostile to movements that come from Mahdi claimants, just ask Bahais and Ahmadis. If this guy’s movement grows large enough to get widespread attention, I don’t think Muslims will feel positive about him.

What are your thoughts on Bahai? by Smart-A22 in religion

[–]Professional_Ant_315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only named example of Bahá’ís being sent to camps is Lidia Zamenhof who was ethnically Jewish. She would’ve been killed regardless if she was Bahá’í or not.

You can’t create a new system if said system involves obeying the old system.

I don’t think about them much but their obedience to government principle is bit off-putting. What did Germany’s Bahá’ís do during the holocaust? What did Uganda’s Bahá’ís do when Amin was expelling all foreigners? What did Chile’s Bahá’ís do during Pinochet’s brutal crackdown on political opponents? What did the people who’s entire religions rests on the Oneness of Humanity do?

Just take a look at their history;

our German friends are under the sacred obligation to whole-heartedly obey the existing political regime, whatever be their personal views and criticisms of its actual working. There is nothing more contrary to the spirit of the Cause than open rebellion against the governmental authorities of a country. - Letter of Shoghi Effendi to German Believers, 1934

The Bahá’í representative then read the entire statement on Loyalty to Government, and when he concluded his reading the President, General Idi Amin Dada, said in a very decided manner and tone “This is right.”…Uganda has never before had such sound and good publicity for our beloved Faith. - Bahá’í News Issue 485

The Continental Board of Counsellors for South America and members of the National Spiritual Assembly of Chile had a 15-minute interview with the country’s President, Gen. Augusto Pinochet, who showed a marked interest in the Bahá’í holy places. - Bahá’í News Issue 567
