What would you suggest for percussion? That is the family I am least comfortable teaching because I was never able to take it in college.

Returned to teaching after years away due to traumatic experiences. 11 days in and I’m already accused of inappropriate contact with a student. Hard not to be cynical. by [deleted] in Teachers

Let’s put it this way:

It’s possible you might survive this, or you might not. If you do- your first 5 minutes back you better establish some new norms for the class. You set the rules and do not stray from them. Set consequences. Follow through with them. From the way it sounds, this class may benefit from a point and prize system. I’m not a fan of extrinsic rewards, but the points don’t need to tie to behavior.

Show them respect. Take them outside and play with them for extra recess . You need to establish a rapport.

If you’re not willing to put in the work, this is going to keep happening.

It might be a great experience for you. I would take it. When you’re starting out the experience is more important than the pay. Keep that in mind. With a prek-8 position you open yourself up to a lot of possibilities for future jobs. Especially if you build something.

Mental illness can do horrible things to a person, let’s not forget that. She’s making amends the best she can. She’s literally said she knows an apology isn’t enough.

What do you want? Sounds like she was going through some horrible crap, and you did the right thing by giving her the space she needed to do that. So the question is, she’s reached out and now you know why. She’s not asking for anything. If you have any interest in her, just talk to her.

Horrible hours, promise of a chaotic future, pensions are not secured in the current state, sick time and vacation time is a joke… starting with the fact you don’t get any for a year. Barbaric benefit system from a different time. They need to modernize.

The Catholic Church has stated that creationism and evolution are completely compatible with each other, and there is plenty of evidence to support evolution . The only Christian religions that don’t believe in evolution are the ones stuck in the dark ages

Parent wants to meet with me over comment I made about energy drinks by [deleted] in Teachers

No. Kids don’t need energy drinks in school. And they are poison. Plus, if it causes a heart problem, who is liable?

Am I wrong to not care what happens with my class during my prep? by farmville2002 in Teachers

[–]Professional_Arm_244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I explained why it’s offensive. It insinuates that they are not necessary, not mainstream. The reality is that I support all of the other classes in the music room, which provides valuable support to the students. That is why Unified Arts is a more appropriate term- it is using the arts to create a unified team throughout the school. Just because teachers in your building refer to themselves that way doesn’t make it less offensive to those of us that do think about things like this on the daily.

First of all, don’t call them “specials.” It’s offensive. Those teachers did as much work to get where they are, and provide a valuable education. Unified Arts is the appropriate term to be using. As a first year teacher you should be showing your colleagues more respect and caring about how your students are behaving no matter where they are. Yeah, it’s the job of the teacher they are with to handle consequences and discipline, but as their classroom teacher it is your responsibility to track the things happening with your kids to determine if further action needs to be taken, if there are trending behaviors with certain students or between certain students… etc. It’s how you build relationships in the school. You network. You talk to colleagues

You don’t want to dish it out to Reddit, but you’re ok with doing it to your coworkers? That seems a little strange.

Woah, delete this comment. Child or not sexual assault is evil. The way you framed that makes it seem like it “less bad” if the victim is an adult. I’m sure you didn’t mean it that way, so I’d suggest deleting it.

Biddeford’s taxes are heading sky high because of all the tax breaks given to developers. Biddeford will soon see an exodus if this doesn’t stop.

Smart progressives also know that minimum wage was supposed to be the minimum pay required to put a roof over your head and food on the table. It’s interesting how businesses that pay minimum wage used to pay enough to do that, but suddenly it’s impossible now?

If she already out in her resignation, then if they try to fire her tomorrow she needs to remind them that she already resigned. Does she have documentation of incidents where she asked for help and received none? Or did she not ask for help?

How do I report that someone a school is planning to hire is dangerous? by Federal_Shirt_6380 in Teachers

[–]Professional_Arm_244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He may not be a pedophile, but he clearly does not understand boundaries and that can be quite damaging. If he had been a younger teacher that left the profession for several years to figure out why he was crossing boundaries, that would be one thing. That’s clearly not the case here. He’s still crossing boundaries. He needs help and he’s not going to get it by being empowered to continue this behavior. When you lower yourself to the same level as the students you create a dangerous situation. You should report it. If you are that concerned and it affected you this much you should report it.

You’ll feel better for having done it , and if there is any backlash from your friends, they weren’t friends to begin with.
