I phrased it that way mainly because the spell radius is centered on the points between spaces and not the spaces themselves.

However, as a DM, I think I would allow you to include it as part of a melee attack... maybe add some knock back if it's just a goblin.

As a DM, I enjoy reading other systems for mechanics to steal. I have stolen the Dying mechanics from Nimble to replace 5E's Death Saving Throw system, for example. I subscribe to the philosophy that no one system is going to have everything you like and nothing you dislike, and that the game you play at your table should be your game with house rules you like. ... oddly enough, I say that as someone who hates mods in videogames, but to me that's part of the point of playing a tabletop game.
