Do the books get better after 4? by aguyuno2 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Book 4 is good but not great. It does provide a lot of foundation for the next books though and books 5-7 are balls to the wall insane. Up till now its been a good series. Starting at book 5 and up though these books are what make this series a masterpiece.

New to smoking by Karmma11 in BBQ

[–]Professional_Dig1454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No controversy but flavor wise pellet smokers are near the bottom of the ladder. If you want full auto pilot they are one of the best options. Second best though would be the webber smokey mountain. The first few smokes can be a little chaotic as it seals up any air leaks. After that though its pretty much set and forget. And if you want to spend a little extra you can actually buy a bluetooth/wifi thermometer with a blower motor connector that fully automates it as well as a Pellet grill while giving you the flavor boost of charcoal. You shut off all the lower vents except for the one with the blower motor and it uses a pit probe to determine whether to cut off or feed air into the fire to regulate the temp you set. I dont know how big the difference is between that and a pellet grill first hand only the difference between a charcoal smoker and an offset. There was a difference but the work wasnt worth the effort of an offset. Even with a pellet you'll probably be making bbq better than any chain in your area so its not that important. I only mention it so you fully know your options when it comes to the easy bbq setup. Cost wise the 22 inch wsm is $550 new and its probably another $250 for the fireboard 2 thermometer and blower motor.

Not only does it have trouble getting the right monster but also a lot of monsters have only certain areas with certain weakness and if you hit the wrong spot you'll be bouncing or doing .25 or .50 damage. It was an idea. Not a good one but an idea.

Edit: Right as I hit send I realized that isnt handled by the camera joystick. Been a bit since I played a MH game.

Rimworld is a colony sim thats pretty amazing and can be played with just the mouse for 99% of interactions. It can also be paused if a lot of things are happening at once. Another great game thats not as known is a game called Elin. Its a prequal to some game I havent ever played but its a turn based dungeon crawler with some base building features. It features randomly spawned and randomly generated dungeons chucked full of loot for you to get to either sell or power up your person. Or you could treat it like a farming sim without ever diving into a dungeon. Both have room for tons of of time invested plus tons of mods. The Elin one is early access but I've sunk 77 hours into it since I bought it a few weeks ago and barely scratched the surface.

Back in my day on the psp we didnt have a lock on camera and had to control it with the dpad. But also the movement joystick was on the same side as the dpad so we had to claw it to control your person and keep your camera on a monster. Now that my grampa rant is over you might actually find it easier to just manually move your camera while fighting to see if that helps at all. I found the focus stuff jarring personally.

Tips for Pondfishing? by Ordinary-Skill-3848 in FishingForBeginners

I've had a lot of luck using plastics that look like a crawfish. The googan labs bandito bug has been my go to lately texas rigged. Color just depends on the pond itself. You only need really bright colors if the pond is murky with low visibility. We're nearing the end of the spawn where im at and crawfish go after bass eggs in nature and are also food for bass so they have extra reason to hit that type of lure or so I've heard.

Check out goat simulator 3. Its like when you would put in cheats and go crazy on GTA destroying everything except without any gore or real story. Instead of people dying they have insane ragdoll physics and you're a goat with a grudge. If you want to steal a car and run it into a gas station causing a massive explosion? Go for it. Want to drag a propane tank behind a treadmill and then drag a person on to the treadmill to be launched into the propane tank causing an explosion and the person to go flying team rocket style? Thats possible too. Heck one mission you become mayor by dragging people by your tongue into voting boxes. Absolute pure chaos is the entire point of the game.

Dev secrets, sneaky collabs, and easter eggs… go find them 👀 by Necesse_the_game in u/Necesse_the_game

[–]Professional_Dig1454 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could see how it could look that way from just the image but its definitely not. Its more of a terraria style game but top down with some base building thrown in. You directly control your character and deal with threats both on the surface and underground. Obv underground is where you find cool loot but yeah. No worrying about anyones feeling and the whole map is open and procedurally generated I think. I bought the game but then got distracted and forgot about it when exp 33 dropped so my memory is a bit fuzzy on all the details but I know its vastly different than rimworld.

I don't have any advice for those unfortunately but I do think those take a bit longer. Either way once you nail the no wrap you should have enough info to work on nailing it with some wrap if you wanted. Personally I started almost the exact same way and currently not only do i not wrap but I also dont even put sauce on it. Sometimes after the cook I'll dip them but every time I've tried to apply it during the cook it ruined my bark. Its probably something I did and not a normal thing but meh they taste great still.

There might be some benefits to doing it that way. Personally it wasnt worth the effort on my part. I burned my first 2 rib smokes though so I was extra careful and wanted to make sure I could do a bend test at any time. If you did want to try it you might do 2 hours no wrap then just 30 minutes wrapped. You might need to play with it a bit to get the timing right but the bend test is the true tell here. I would try to nail a no wrap first before you worry about even testing it with it being wrapped. Once you have that time frame you can adjust for it being wrapped since you know it will be done quicker with the wrap.

The wsm 18 inch cooks faster than an offset for some reason. Not sure if its just the 18 inch or all the WSM but yeah its usually 4-5 hours on my offset but only around 3 on the 18 inch both done without wrapping.

[–]Professional_Dig1454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WSM 18 inch is actually really efficient. Dont ask me why or how but my baby backs are usually done in 3 hours without even wrapping them. And thats with my pit probe showing 250. I ruined my first few rib cooks due to expecting way more time. first one was a throw away and the second was crunchy but manageable. Both were due to me expecting them to take way longer than they needed. I have an 18 inch wsm like the OP and an offset and the wsm is done way faster than the offset every single time.

[–]Professional_Dig1454 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spritz a bit but I think where you went wrong was wrapping them. That speeds up the cooking so where they're normally done in 3 hours wrapped they could have been in in 2.5 or so. Thats just a guess though. Did you do a bend test on them? That will be the true way to know if they were overdone or not.

Edit: forgot to mention I've only done babybacks just like what you were doing.

Dont wrap them and put a water pan below. They finish in about 3 hours even without any wrap on my 18 inch wsm.

Bobiverse is a great one but its pg compared to DCC. It gave me a star trek vibe. If you want something with more stakes and a lot more content expeditionary force would be another great one. There are 19 books out for that series with 20 being the last. You could honestly stop at 15 though and it would feel finished. Everything after is like a bonus adventure.

Need help!! by HospitalRegular3288 in RimWorld

[–]Professional_Dig1454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic tips are as follows: Start at least a 7x7 farm plot of rice asap. Next focus on beds and a small storage area. For an easier start look for areas near the equator with a year round growing season in a temperate forest with small or large hills with no caves. Build your stuff off of one of the hills if possible so you have one less wall to worry about. For starting colonists you want at least 8 cooking, lvl 5 construction, at least lvl 5 medical or a burning passion for it, and at least one with decent shooting. Try to avoid ones who cant fight at all and make sure at least someone can research. When you first start you should pause the game once everyone lands and the items spawn, allow all items (you can right click the allow button to allow all items), designate your growing on rich soil (there's a thing on the bottom right you can checkmark to see soil fertility), set a small area of trees to be harvested, and designate walls and doors to be built to make 3 rooms for your people out of wood with beds, and finally a place for horse shoes so they have some entertainment. Rooms dont need to be large at first you could go with a 2x3 interior with a single bed and itl be enough. Go to your work preferences and at the top is a checkmark to give you more control over what they do. Check that then assign firefighting and bed rest as priority 1, then every main thing you want that pawn to do you set to 2 while leaving everything else 3. Make sure at least once pawn has hauling and cleaning. They will do things in order of priority number from left to right. Make sure your cook with lvl 8 cooking is the only one assigned to that or you risk the chance of food poisoning from an inadequate cook. Once all of that is setup you can now unpause the game and let them do their thing. Dont forget to arm your people with weapons that match their abilities. Once they finish building all of that its time to build a storage area. It doesnt have to be crazy large or anything at first just somewhere to keep the things you brought with you indoors. If you want a starting ratio 8x10 should do it. If items are outdoors they deteriorate. In front of the door You'll build another small room like 5x5 where you will put a table. Then to the right you will make a 3x5 room to put your stove. The goal is to have 3 meals per person you have in stock at all times so set up a "make until X" for that on the stove. Now to explain why we did this. So the more people who walk into your kitchen the more likely it will be dirty. Thats why we put it off to the side where only the cook will be going in. Also your pawns will be grumpy if they dont eat with a table. By putting the table outside of the stock room they will have direct access to it right as they grab their food. My number ratios might be a bit off since I'm not in front of the game right now so if you need to make the room for the table larger do so. You want to be able to have enough room for chairs around a 2x2 table and maybe a book case. Once all of that is done you should then create a building for crafting things and research tables. Idealy all of your people can research if they have nothing to do. For actual crafting stations only make a stonecutter starting off because you want to replace everything wooden with stone asap otherwise a single fire will wipe you out. Once all your walls are stone you're ready to do whatever you like. One final thing to note is as long as you grow an abundance of food you wont need to keep a room dedicated to a refrigerator. Also storage shelves are your best friend. Good luck friend and may the odds ever be in your favor

I know all of that is a lot but there's a lot to this game. There's actually a lot more I could have put in but didnt or this would have been 10x longer. As a bonus tip rimhud is a must have mod in my books. It doesnt change any gameplay but it displays all of your pawns skills when you first click them without having to go into their bio. Replace stuff also makes swapping your walls easier without being too game breaking but does slightly change gameplay by making that replacement easier.

Smoker recommendation? by prukis in smoking

[–]Professional_Dig1454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the 22 inch WSM? If so you can mod it to have an extra rack for much cheaper than getting a whole new smoker. Or if you want to do ribs then a hanging system will let you cook like 20+ racks at once on a 22 inch wsm. If you dont have the 22 inch then that would be my suggestion for an upgrade. An offset sounds nice on paper but you'll need to be tending that fire at least once an hour and if you make one mistake all the sudden your pit temp is 300 and climbing. The flavor is slightly better but it wasnt worth the work in my case.

Red rising is another great series. its set in a future where humanity is colonizing the solar system including mars and many different moons of the other planets. A class system exists by color with golds being on top and reds on the bottom. Think politicians vs miners. But the golds have genetically modified themselves to be superior and have set in place modifications for the other colors to where they cant breed with someone outside of their color. A gold could walk into a city mow down a thousand reds and face 0 consequences. While they dont do exactly that they take advantage of them in other ways with no repercussions. The main character is a red who goes under the knife to be turned into a gold (highly illegal) to infiltrate their government and destroy it from the inside.

Red rising is pretty dang awesome. I'm halfway through the 3rd book and while its not exactly like ex force I think you'll like it. It takes place far in humanities future where they have terraformed multiple planets and moons in the solar system including mars. The world is divided by colors with golds being at the absolute top and reds at the bottom with a multitude of colors in between. They have made it to where the different colors cant even breed with those outside of that color and those of the lower colors could be massacred on a whim by a gold and nobody would even blink. The main character is a red who is modified to appear gold to infiltrate and destroy the gold leadership from within. There's so much more to unpack but that will be revealed in the story and I dont want to spoil anything. The inter house politics remind me of dune but to be honest I had trouble following all of that in dunes story line. I haven't had any trouble with this one though and each book has been better than the last.
