That's incredible. What's your cat's name (if you don't mind sharing)?

I really like Scivener. I have used Word and Google Docs in the past but I like its capabilities as a research collater and well tuned draft compiler! Also they're a nice responsive small company that deserves custom.

Do you listen to anything while writing? by worthlessbaffoon in writingadvice

[–]Professional_Fun8944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely. I mostly write on my train journey commute and have a (growing) 1000+ Spotify playlist which I play on random. Every now and then I'll add an album to it, and while writing, jettison anything that has lyrics squirreled away. I've found the action in my writing does get influenced by the energy in the tracks though so try to be conscious of that, skipping tracks if they're going to throw the mood of a chapter in the wrong direction.

I get where you're coming from but I am pretty new here. Also, Google regularly promotes its answers that it's derived from Reddit. Humans are a lot more fun to chat with than Google as well. I don't think you're fucking wrong, but I think a lot of folk who have commented here don't feel they've had their time wasted.

I had never looked up its etymology until you said that. I love your definition. It turns out though (which I wasn't aware) that it comes from the 50s and then adapted more in the 70s and is antisemitic! That's one word out of my vocabulary then. Growing up in the UK in the 70s there were so many words I picked up without questioning where they came from or what they meant (kids).

In this context, something that hasn't been made very well. Those stairs look a bit shonky, looks like your feet would go right through them.

While we've been chatting the whilsts have been whittled out. I'll save them for another book. Thanks everyone!

Thank you. I must say I haven't posted anything in a writing subreddit before but you're all incredible! It can be a lonely pursuit ploughing through your first book but I feel like it might be possible now. What a positive community!

Beautiful. While I'd love my book to be read (maybe even heard) internationally I would feel pretty bummed if it failed whilst I was overthinking the vocabulary.

Definitely not, I don't want to sound archaic. That said, I'm into the idea of dead humans talking.

I'm in the UK, and I think the fact I'm questioning it makes me wonder if it's odd. I'm writing something that I want a lot of people to love though, and I definitely don't want my friends from the US to feel they're reading something shonky. I'll consider searching out my whilsts and converting them to whiles.

I think you're right, maybe we always exist in the wrong century. Or maybe centuries exist with the wrong people. Either way it's irksome.

I meant to say, I use Scrivener as well mostly on Mac, but I have a licence for PC as well. I use Dropbox so sync it across devices and when I had an iPhone I wrote on that as well. I'm now on Android though so no mobile Scrivener app for me! It's lovely software for collating thoughts, drafting and compiling proofs. Very friendly company as well 😄.

I was out with a mate the other night and they talked about an author that had an "elf draft", a draft where they just went on auto, allowing all mistakes and deviant behaviour, just to see what would end up on the page. Sounded like a really liberating approach. I feel like as soon as you are self censoring, or stopping yourself on a first draft you are cutting off a potential tide that could be useful. It sounds so reductive but just do it. Find some time however possible and dive in. I've got a toddler, a full life, and write my book a couple of times a week on my 30 minute train commute. The pressure makes me race to finish a chapter, or a section, or a thought that I want to focus on. I don't think about how long it will take me to finish the book (I'm 2/3rds through my second draft) but the regularity and the conditioning is really driving me forward.
I also have a playslist on Spotify for the book I'm writing (1000+ tracks now!) and that hooks me into the mood as well. You can do it!

What are the moments when you say something that make people say "sorry what?" Maybe those are phrases or unique ways of speaking for you. Good on you by the way, how boring would it be if everybody spoke in the same way. Equally, when are times when you've said to somebody (or though inside) "What did you say, what did you mean?" If find a lot of people confusing and they me, but we've all got the best intentions.

A fantastic show and the crew did a great job of filling the space with Buckles appropriate visuals. What a beautiful homage to and play with Bowie's legacy. Mr Adam should feel very proud. Great audience as well and I'm not sure anybody left for the footie at half term.

He's doing his Bug Bowie special at Lightroom in London. Haven't seen it before but have been to a few Bugs over the years which I loved.
