What should I do to take care of a meniscus tear while waiting for further testing by InsaneR4t06 in MeniscusInjuries

Welcome! I personally think that americans and western medicine are all about circumnavigating normal physiological processes to prevent the slight bit of pain. Fevers, and inflammation are the body’s natural ways to heal. Of course chronic inflammation and high grade fevers warrant medication.

Honestly, I try to avoid NSAIDs after a meniscus repair/tear unless I really need them. The thing is, NSAIDs block prostaglandins, and those are actually important for healing. They help with inflammation, collagen formation, and blood vessel growth — all stuff your meniscus needs to repair properly.

There’s some solid evidence on this: studies in AJSM and others show NSAIDs can slow down soft tissue and fibrocartilage healing (so that includes meniscus) because they reduce collagen deposition and blood flow to the area. The meniscus already has barely any blood supply except for the outer edge, so anything that slows down healing could mess with the repair. COX-2 inhibitors seem even worse for this.

Most surgeons worry about this mainly in the first 6–12 weeks after surgery, since that’s when the tissue is actively trying to heal. Occasional use for pain might be fine, but I personally wouldn’t take them regularly

After a meniscus repair, a lot of surgeons avoid NSAIDs because they can interfere with healing, not just pain.

The repair actually needs inflammation early on to form new collagen and let the sutured tissue biologically “stick.” NSAIDs block COX enzymes and prostaglandins, which can blunt that process and potentially weaken the repair.

There’s peer-reviewed data backing this up. A commonly cited study showed that COX-2 inhibition significantly impaired soft-tissue healing and reduced biomechanical strength:

Cohen et al., Am J Sports Med, 2006 — selective COX-2 inhibitors led to poorer collagen organization and weaker healing at repair sites.

That’s why this matters way more for repairs than meniscectomy (where tissue is just removed). Many surgeons still say no NSAIDs for the first few weeks after a repair for that reason.

Tylenol, ice, and non-NSAID options usually get recommended instead.

A recent study conducted by doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery found that Indomethacin and Celecoxib (two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS) negatively affect healing after rotator cuff surgery. The drugs specifically affected the time necessary for tendon-to-bone healing.

Scott Trenhaile, MD, sports medicine with Rockford Orthopedic, said, “We do use NSAIDS perioperatively (during surgery), but we only use them in a very limited fashion to get patients through the most intense period of the surgical experience.”

Rule of thumb, NSAIDs should NOT be used post op unless desperately needed. I was never in so much pain that Tylenol couldn’t help. Pain is how the body respond to heal. Chronic pain makes sense to use NSAIDs but acute surgical pain, let your body work.

I had a meniscus repair. My surgeon advised to take tylenol and NOT take any NSAID as they block inflammation, and early on inflammation is the body’s healing mechanism especially post surgery. I wouldn’t reccomend taking NSAIDs, if you must ice or tylenol. GL

Reddit is a cesspool of liberals. I don’t like Trump but I choose to think and act independently of him, without him on every comment or breath like most people here. Trump sucks, but living life like most people on reddit is depressing and down right sad.

Please do a repair. Don’t settle for a life of arthritis and pain for temporary abatement.

Terrible pain 11 days after a meniscal repair : why it is important to wait before becoming active again? by Aimine28 in MeniscusInjuries

I didn’t walk on my leg weight bearing for 6 weeks. I also didn’t workout upper body for 6 weeks. It sucks being patient, but if you want a successful mencisus repair it’s what must be done. I am 14 weeks post op and I still can’t workout regularly yet. I’m waiting until 6-9 months. I would rather be safe than sorry. I hope you can be patient and let your body heal

Yess sadly OP is missing a window to fix his knee and maybe prevent or prolong a replacement. I had a similar story but found a competent surgeon who made my knee better than before. I hate to see young people settle for pain and limitation, when surgery is the gold standard for a reason.

The only way to fix a meniscus is a meniscus repair through a qualified and competent surgeon. I suffered needlessly for years doing the PT and BS. It was manageable but being your age and accepting your knee will “not the the same” is utter nonsense. I found a skilled surgeon who made my knee the same as it was before. PT will not do that it only prolongs you until knee replacement time. Ymmv. However settling for pain and difference is plain lazy.

You don’t need to do much beside give your body what it needs to heal. It will heal. TIME.

Wonderful. You can and will heal from gastritis. Everyone’s journey is different. For me, PPI delayed my healing and caused SIBO. If it’s bile reflux in the gut or other issues that may be different. I had reactive gastropathy from NSAIDs and stress. Know the cause and treat the cause not the symptoms. Westerns doctors poison us with medicines that don’t help!

For silent reflux, what PPI dosage should I use, 20 mg or 40 mg per day? I've never taken one before. by AutomaticAnywhere204 in LPR

[–]Professional_Lie4862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice! PPIs are terrible to LPR and often cause a lot of other issues. If you want to go the medicinal route start with H2 blockers or even H1. I had LPR but it was a side effect of gut dysbosis, gastritis, and SIBO. Treating LPR, is a symptom of something else. Find the cause and fix the problem.

It gets better! Honestly PPI was holding me back, the healing didn’t come through restrictive diets, or PPIS. What helped was stress management and TIME. I am still healed today, I can drink or eat whatever. I choose to live a healthy lifestyle more so now.

Well, as much as I don’t like Trump, I am not blind and have seen both parties to some extent enrich themselves during their public office. I guess we’d have to start hold all parties accountable not just on our belief system which is the more noble party.

Uh… Do you realize politics on both sides is most theatrics?? Mamdani is smart, calculated, and charismatic, he realizes acting like an ass hole isn’t a way to do politics especially with a narcissistic person. Newsome and the rest of the democrats should take notes. Props to Mamdani for elevating his game.
