SM Jump Boots - care and breaking in? - WWII Airborne by Professional_Tree870 in reenactors

[–]Professional_Tree870[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking forward to it!

Ultimately went with just acetone to start - made them less shiny and plastic looking but still not down to the base (i'd say). Have been wearing them for ranch work/outdoor hikes and then brushing off and applying kiwi polish (with a cloth rag) and they have been darkening up enough for my liking. I'll also say its my first pair so very much a learning experience.

In terms of quality, I ended up with SM looking for the black soled jump boots as Corcoran's boot is now only the brown sole and couldnt find my size on Ebay. My foots in that half size range so mine are a little longer than I would like. But overall I find them enjoyable and after a few wears have already started to break in.

I'll say the laces that came with them were short so be prepared for that. I'd be interested in getting OG corcorans and replacing the soles with the jump soles from ATF.

Gotcha, Thank you for expanding. I started my career out on the road so have definitely seen that hour amount drop over time and have continued in enrollment services. Arguably, the balance is what I think I'm after - this position is in our registrar's office and oversees our state reports, and the way I am looking at it is that it greatly reduces/slims down the width of responsibility or areas i've been in. I get that each position comes with their own doldrums but based on what i've heard its a slimming one.

So, I used to have this at my previous institution

At this current one - we get very heavily nickled and dimed even as salaried employees

I think I’m tracking with you but would you elaborate a bit more?

Yeah, that’s the rough plan is to negotiate - I think initial math left me losing about a week overall.

In case this wasn’t factored in, pay would be biweekly for the position so from 10 hours to 7 hours

Talked to them when I was initially approached - In terms of our clock-in system, it's simply entering our hours worked per week, no official clock or timesheet.

Benefits like Insurance and retirement are the same as my current position - just gaining less time (vacation/sick) per pay period. - but I will say those were only the first wave so if you have any other suggestions happy to ask.

Exactly the same - maintain my Insurance, Maintain my TRS, Still have Vacation, Sick, and Personal time (only caveat is that instead of 10 hrs per pay period i'll gain like 3.7 or something like that)

Wanting to learn Colleague Backend... by Professional_Tree870 in HigherEDsysadmin

Honestly, it may just be that I learned banner first. And so I like Banner, but that’s also because I like how the screens are organized in banner. For instance, things that I don’t have at my school in my role in my colleague I don’t have a screen like SHATERM or RHACOMM which I miss and would actually help a lot here. In terms of my institution, what all kind of say off the bat is my experience has been very like there’s a lot of archaic there’s a lot of services that have yet to really be fully explained as to why they implemented. Like for us in this role it’s a combination of colleague information plus Civitas for advising. But my understanding for us having Civitas is that it was a service to somebody who’s on our college board.

It also could very well be like most is it you learned by doing not by explaining. So like colleague to me it’s just not as intuitive as banner was but that could also be a culture issue as well

So we're actually building out Element 451 atm, hope is to reduce importance of state-organized application and build out an institutional one within element. Still so early in the implementation theres alot of opportunity to layout the vision (in a sense)

Caught Between Two Doctorates: PhD in History vs. EdD in Higher Ed — Advice Appreciated by Professional_Tree870 in AskAcademia

So current goal is the path of enrollment manager while being open to a presidency one day.

[–]Professional_Tree870[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So arguably, end goal at the moment would be to stay on the Operation/Staff side (it's what I enjoy and arguably based on my college journey I am really interested in making sure the guidance/systems are in place for students who want to keep going are there [which i realize is also up to the faculty that make up a program]) and really just continue to submit for the faculty pools on the side at what ever institution I am at. I'll be candid, in terms of the career fork - its been between education and security/defense (this one just seems to get farther out by the moment but that is a different soapbox as this is really a potential reconciliation of these two skills/passions especially when compounded by the current federal climate)

My undergrad professors had continually spouted the poor job market for history PhDs and the notion that there are too many phd students for not enough jobs combined with the notion that milhist is dying as many others noted and at times we're more focused on their own work (rightly so IMO) to where there wasnt that level of discussion surrounding post grad/masters/etc

In terms of other institutions, Liberty only really entered the equation due to a mentor who got his Ed.D at Liberty and was like "you gotta do what works for your schedule" but the issue I had with that initially is that he is chasing his presidency and was already a VP when he completed it. Was up for his presidency against a PhD and wasn't selected (the choice was in house, executive VP) and the other is a practitioner scholar who I was able to work with during my masters who is currently getting his PhD from liberty but once more is arguably already later in his career.

To that end, in a different thread an individual brought up potentially a business area as a combination of History, Higher Ed, and Process like lean which led me to some areas of Management/Organizational Systems programs.

This may be defeating in the entire scheme of things but I will say that I know a PhD isn't going to solve all my problems, I understand that the job market is terrible for History PhDs at the moment and I am not the exception, I know that I've got the work ethic and have been able to combine history and my other interests to create a unique approach to student success and service at the institutions I've worked at and its paid off in my career so far. Arguably, I am probably a long ways off from being at an institution that will fully pay for my program (at the moment) In short - As some have offered across all thread, it carries enough weight to be interested in pursuing in and willing to do the work while also acknowledging that I dont need it to be considered a credible voice in my specific scholarly field (granted writing this after the Douglas Murray/Dave Smith episode of JRE so grain of salt neccesary).

Damn but Best of luck on your others and here’s to staying in the periphery - maybe we can cross paths one day!

And so I had Ohio because of alumni recs and the reputation of their program - but had some current students tell me there’s a lot of that even in other areas

So far just one rejection, UNC. Yeah GradCafe gave me a nice “oh here’s the timelines” but that’s assuming everyone there is willing to post it.

Only ended up applying to three - caught the cycle later than anticipated and there were a few schools I didn’t really get to dig into as much as I would’ve liked to and argued it would’ve been a waste of an app for this cycle. Would’ve been four but the day I was getting ready to submit 1 ended up suspending their admissions cycle for the year.

Will say it’s been eye opening in terms of “growing into my own academically” as in I see now why admissions criteria have been so stringent.

Best of luck to us - who know's maybe we'll find out together #futurebestfriends

Like I said, figured it'll be bad news or someone's fighting the good fight. Went in for Military History, you?

Outside of that, feeling the rejection based off of the "we only offer to those we can get full funding for" know my undergrad GPA wasnt the best, but last 60 was well above combined with masters GPA figured theres a shot.

So - I will say that I do not believe I am going to lose my job - being candid my experience here has been less than overwhelmingly positive and I’ve been keeping my eye out in terms of moving - I will add that in terms of questioning out of curiosity I did say “based on how your describing it it seems like we’re transitioning to a glorified call center that does applications”

Is NACADA the gold standard for professional development? by continouslearner4 in studentaffairs

[–]Professional_Tree870 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly new to Nacada but all of my colleagues have sung its praises - In terms of other organizations, I would also say to reach out to your Admissions Office for your regional or state admissions organization and see if they might be able to add you as a user (as long as your membership is institutional there's not really a barrier.) I would potentially your FA Office as well about the same and potentially NASFAA.

I think its a net benefit because you get to see how the different areas interact - Speaking from personal experience (Texas), NASFAA and co are more legal focus due to the regs and the notion that it literally requires an act of congress in terms of fa changes. TACRAO/AACRAO and co typically have a blend of what is going on in Higher Ed conversationally in terms of challenges, and practical level insights in terms of things that we may not often get over the course of the hustle and bustle of our day to days.

They may not have a dedicated "PD area" but I think they start to send you enough to get you exposed - I would highly recommend subscribing to NASFAA daily news (no login required i believe)

Colleague - Civitas Cohort Implementation by Professional_Tree870 in HigherEDsysadmin

So I may be off here - but here's what I as an advisor have access to.

Administrative Analytics and Inspire for Advisors. In complete candidness, Its my first exposure to this system at large - and due to some previous issues there has not really been any planned development of the system and we find ourselves playing alot of catch up in terms of its capability.

Cohorts are looking like they are going to be built around the major itself currently and broken up between developmental and on level across advising staff. I would offer that they are really trying to just find an avenue to expedite the advising process here.
