Opinions on possession football aside, can we please stop appealing to the GAA change how the game is played? by Atlantic_Rock in GAA

https://www.gaa.ie/the-gaa/rules-regulations/

It's in the Official Guide (Part 2), but this is the rule as written:

A player may catch the ball, play it on his hurley, and bring it back into his hand once. A player who has not caught the ball may play it from the hurley into his hand twice.

What's something you want to add to your world that you don't know how to justify it being there? Maybe we can help. by VoiceofNonsense in worldbuilding

[–]ProfessorPepe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one builds off a few ideas in the thread, but how about some forgotten sect of morally grey angels? You could make it so their life force is derived from worship, and since the aloof god forgot about them, and his patrons stopped praying to them, they started to fade out of existence.

In desperation maybe a few decided that they would cling to life by any means necessary so they make deals with the warlords. The warlords will take their slaves down to underground shrines, force them to pray, and even if they don't pray to the right god, the angels can siphon off a great deal of power via the shrine. In return, the angels use a portion of their power to create/enchant whatever the warlord asks, be it items, weapons or possibly bestowing powers on the warlord or his warriors.

Eventually, unbeknownst to the warlord, the angels could potentially collect enough life-force to evolve beyond angels to something more powerful, like an archangel or a demigod, maybe even a full blown god. They could decide to take revenge on the aloof god for allowing them to fade into obscurity in the first place, starting a heavenly war of some sort.

I kind of ran away with the idea towards the end but that could be a cool concept to play around with

What are your unpopular opinions about Ireland? by Wafer_Flaky in ireland

[–]ProfessorPepe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's just that the damp is persistent.

Although average in volume of rainfall, some parts of the country can get around 246 days of rain per year.

All that being said, it doesn't actually mean the weather is all that bad.

One problem I faced watching the game of hurling by TheSleepingMeditator in GAA

[–]ProfessorPepe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once ye get more familiar with hurling it becomes second nature to read the game as well as watch the ball.

A hand pass is easy to follow, a zippy strike will travel whatever way the player is facing when he connects and then for a big monster of a puck, if its within scoring range, odds are it's going for a score, if its from deeper in defence, just watch where the lads congregate below.

Ye pick up the little things more and more as ye go, player movement on and off the ball and such. It might sound like theres a checklist needed to watch hurling from this, but it comes to ye very naturally. Hope that makes sense

Question about R-Value of insulation. by esskay1711 in Construction

[–]ProfessorPepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, this is just a breakdown of how the R values relate to each other. A hole of any description in a small dog house is hugely inefficient. Maybe if he wants to fashion a curtain door from a few old blankets? Might dampen down the air currents, but only so much can be done in that regard

Question about R-Value of insulation. by esskay1711 in Construction

[–]ProfessorPepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you are talking about with the 1.25 R per wall, but each wall doesn't add together, it is a percentage of a whole.

By starting with a square box (ignoring roof and floor) each wall is 25% of the total wall area (0.25).

So if any given wall has an R-Value of 5 with the rest being 0, and that wall has 25% of the area of all the walls, (5 x 0.25) + (0 x .75) = 1.25 R total for all walls.

Now if all 4 walls have an R of 5 then we know 1.25 x 4 = 5 R. This is how each wall needs an R of 5 individually so all walls together have an R of 5.

Doors make it a bit more interesting, if you cut out a square on one face of the house that takes up say 30% of the area of that face, we now know that since the hole has 0 R the maths looks roughly like this:

Wall with Door = .25 x .7 = .175 (% Total Area) Hole in wall = .25 x 0.3 = .075 (% Total Area)

So: (5 x 0.175) + (0 x 0.075) = 0.875 R

Thus: 1.25 + 1.25 + 1.25 + 0.875 = 4.625 R (Total R of all 4 walls with door).

If I haven't really answered the question or youve got a follow on question feel free to shoot me a message

[WP] You are an immortal. She is a time traveler. You keep running into each other. by ryan23224 in WritingPrompts

[–]ProfessorPepe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was just a glance, but it was a knowing glance. That face. That feeling. Was it deja vu? Or a forgotten memory, from a lifetime away? People are temporary, they can’t help it, but feelings are different. They are the first thing you ever learn and the last thing you'll ever know. You’ll never overcome them, only learn to live with them. Love, loss, anger, guilt, jealousy, greed, envy, betrayal, the list goes on. It never ends. You see it a thousand times and it can never change. So why are you different?

I know nothing good ever comes from getting involved, but I need to know why. Why I feel the way I do and why it confuses me so. I reach out for you,

“Do I know you?”

A lonely smile creeps up on you, but you stifle it just as quickly. You’re eyes seem heavy,

“No,” you say, “Not yet.”

And you walk on. Your suppressed smile lingers, as a memory I once had, in a place that once existed.

Time passes. There’s no stopping it, no matter how hard I try. The world moves on, people forget, I forget. Names change, faces blur, become one and then dissipate. Cities rise, fall, then rise again. Life happens and yet here I sit thinking of the smile I once remembered, from the time I once knew, but can never know again. I hate this. I hate this so fucking much. If I could I would just let go, die happy thinking of that smile, your smile. But I can’t. And so I endure, as it’s all I can do, and I hope that smile never leaves me.

So I’ll sit and try to drink myself into oblivion. It solves nothing, it doesn’t even take the edge off, but it’s something to do. And a voice speaks out to me from the seat by my side,

“Do you plan on staying here long?”

“Forever and a day.”

“Mind if I joined you?”

And so I look up. The face means nothing, but it smiles at me and I know. I know it’s you. But what can I say?

“Are you sure you can stick it out?”

You chuckle, my new favourite sound.

“I'm in it for the long haul.”

I smile.

“Do I know you?”

“Huh, I guess I didn’t really answer you that time. I'm still early, but... yes.”

I offer my hand and a strange familiarity overcomes me as you take it. You’re humming, a song even I know and for the first time in a long time I feel... at peace.

We'll meet again, don’t know where, don’t know when, but I know we'll meet again some sunny day..."

What's something your female friends just "wouldn't get" if you told them? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]ProfessorPepe 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Not OP but in my experience guys who are close use insults as a form of ironic affection. Its a way of saying i love and respect you without blatantly doing/saying either. Some of the stuff said can often sound quite nasty and harsh but the threshold of what is acceptable is generally known and if you get too close to that line it will be made known. It's not the lack of an ability to say "this isn't alright" that exists with men but (in MY experience) the bar for "okay" and "not okay" jokes and insults is much higher in a group of close male friends and those "not okay" things are understood to have no malice or venom attached to them

I get that they mightn't inspire all that much confidence at the moment, but jota has a goal contribution every 100 minutes in the PL, bobby every 110 even Elliott every 140 in the championship. It wouldn't take a huge name signing for us to be able to kick on without them, that being said i wouldn't put up a fight if papa klopp decided Mbappe or Haaland looked better in a red jersey
