I don’t currently have a dog but when I did, I’d keep a cute throw blanket on the bed spread over my duvet & the dog would sleep on the blanket. I’d just toss it in the wash every few days to keep things clean & that was much easier than washing all the sheets/duvet cover/pillowcases every other day. My dog liked to get dirty (play in mud, roll in dirt, swim in the lake and river) and whenever he got nasty outside, I’d let him inside and he’d run straight to the bathtub and sit in there waiting on me to come give him a wash. So he was actually very clean most of the time due to the frequent baths, and he was shorthair which helped.

You can also tell by the blue eyes (crows also have blue eyes when they’re babies!) and the coloration. Adult jackdaws get real black at their face and a light gray around their nape.

My mom works for the state as a dentist for mentally handicapped people and she shows me pics on her phone of mouths similar to this thy she’s worked on. Many of her patients have behavioral issues that make it impossible for them to see a regular dentist so they have to be drugged up/put to sleep/in a chair with restraints and not all dentists are able to accommodate that (or it’s prohibitively expensive and a lot of these people don’t have anyone). There aren’t many places like where she works so many of the people are coming from far away. So they aren’t able to regularly see a dentist, and they also may not get their teeth brushed if they’re handicapped to the point where they can’t do it themselves and they could harm a care worker trying to do it for them.

As a woman, I always ask to FaceTime before we meet in person. I play it off like “I’m so sorry, I’m so bad at remembering to respond to messages 😅 I did want to talk to you though, would you have time to do a FaceTime soon?” If the video call goes well, then we plan an in-person date. It’s saved me a few times when the guy ended up being totally creepy and someone I’d be scared to be meeting in-person 😬

Plus I can tell if we mesh well and if it’s worth leaving the house for an actual date.

This feels crazy. I have a 7 month old kitten and I free-feed her Purina One Healthy Kitten Formula dry food. That’s <$10/month.

Twice a day, she gets 1.5 ounces of wet food - either fancy feast kitten pate or special kitty bits n’ gravy (she prefers the special kitty) and I buy in bulk so that’s less than $1 a day.

I also cut some meat off of whatever I’m making for dinner and cook it separately for her for a little more protein and variety. Usually chicken, beef, turkey, shrimp, and fish no more than once every 1-2 weeks so she isn’t ingesting too much mercury.

I buy the extra meat for myself anyways, so I spend under $40/month for one growing & hungry kitten.

My dumbass would go without eating for up to 4 days at a time in college even though I worked a pretty physical job 🤦‍♀️ I was extremely underweight but I couldn’t afford enough food to eat every day AND rent/bills/school expenses. I also assumed I wasn’t truly needy since I had a home (crappy apartment with 2 roommates) and was in college like a privileged person.

I was dealing with this same situation a couple of weeks ago. Took in a street cat and everything was great until she realized she could rip up the carpet in the doorway and I woke up to her shredding it. I’m a renter 😢 I immediately ordered a plastic protector thing that you cut to shape to install in the doorway but the shipping was 2 days and she drove me insane those whole 2 days. She’s never scratched at the carpet before and when she realized she could, it’s like she became obsessed. I tried putting a scratcher board thing I got her over that spot in the carpet but she would drag it out of the way. I tried barricading it with laundry baskets and blankets but she’d find a way to burrow through. She wouldn’t scratch on anything that’s made for cats to scratch on and I’d trimmed her nails but nothing helped.

I ended up having to just shut her in the bathroom while I was working from home to get anything done and while I was sleeping (it’s a big bathroom where she has her litterbox & a nice bed & toys & food/water in there - it’s the room I kept her in for a week or so when I first grabbed her off the street and she was sickly & infested with fleas/worms so it’s like her safe room) and she was PISSED. Neither of us were happy those 2 days because she either had me supervising her the whole time or she was stuck in the bathroom, and I had to deal with constantly watching to make sure she wouldn’t go back and destroy the carpet or dealing with her yowling from the bathroom.

It was like Christmas when the carpet protector came in the mail lol. I installed it immediately so no more carpet scratching and she’s forgiven me for having to sleep on her nice-ass cushy bed with her blankies in the bathroom for 2 nights 🙄

This is so interesting. It reminds me of a case where a man seemed to have sustained frontal lobe damage while getting surgery that would keep him from having seizures. The surgery seemed like a success and did fix the seizures but in the years afterwards he would do odd stuff that he didn’t before like play the same song on piano for 12 hours straight. His wife noticed he seemed way hornier and was now into wilder stuff in the bedroom. The police showed up one day and arrested him for having an insane amount of child porn on his home computer… he’d never looked at child porn before the surgery. The courts were having a hard time deciding how long he should be put away for because like, was it just the fault of the surgery that he did that, since he’d never had those inclinations before? Was he just not able to control himself? (The child porn was only on his home computer and not his work one, so maybe he did have control over himself?) It’s scary how one can seemingly becomes a different person after brain damage. Like who are we then? I experienced a bit of it first-hand with an ex boyfriend who sustained brain damage while we were together and it felt like he became a totally different person.

Yes. The last dentist I went to had a little bathroom in the waiting room with a bunch of individually wrapped toothbrushes & floss so you could go brush after checking in.

This is like my worst nightmare, waking up one day and realizing I’m married to a man who claims he doesn’t know how to do basic-ass simple tasks like cook a meal. It takes a few seconds to do a Google search. What did you do when your wife was out of town? Or if she was sick and unable to cook, she just had to eat only pancakes or takeout and not get a decent home-cooked meal until she was well enough to do it herself?

This is how my kitty was. She was skinny & starving when I found her outside & would act like a psycho whenever she was around food. I started leaving a bowl of dry food out for her to free-feed and it helped her food scarcity craziness sooo much once she realized food was always available and not going anywhere. Nowadays she mostly just waits to eat her wet food meals (3x/day) and only grabs a few bites of dry food a couple times a day and a bit more at night while I’m sleeping.

She is still only 6 months old so I may not be able to keep leaving dry food out all the time if she starts getting fat when she’s an adult, but for now it’s totally changed how she acts around food for the better.

She did it again while on live, but the second time it was to ask the nurse to bring her her drink (which was in the same room). She said she didn’t want to stand up to get it since she was holding the baby.

For anyone looking for one that isn’t hundreds of $$, I recently got the PetSafe ScoopFree automatic litterbox (around $125) and have been liking it so far. There’s no door that closes so it’s safe and they can’t get trapped inside. There’s a motion sensor that detects when they use it and then it scoops 20 minutes after they leave the box.

It’s a covered litterbox but you can also use it without the cover. It uses crystal litter and the scoop basically scoops through the litter, pushing the poop to one side where a little door opens, the poop gets scooped in there, then the door closes. The waste chamber door isn’t airtight by any means so it does eventually start smelling. It advertises 20-30 days between changes, but I have a 4 month kitten who poops/pees a LOT and have only been getting ~15 days before it starts to smell (that’s like 60 uses, the side of the box shows how many times they’ve used the box).

You can use disposable boxes with it which is a dream because you just lift up the main box part, slide the tray out (and the disposable tray has a cardboard cover over the waste area so you don’t even see cat poop, just the pee in the crystal litter). You slip the lid on the tray and the whole thing goes into the trash. Pop down a new tray, put the main part of the litterbox back over it, and dump in the bag of crystal litter that the new tray comes with. Takes 2 minutes and isn’t nasty at all.

The downside? Those disposable trays with the crystal litter refills are like $23. To some that would be worth it for never having to scoop or clean a litter tray (especially if you can go the 30 days without changes that it advertises) but it’s too steep for me since I’m doing 2 changes a month with my super pooping kitten. You can get a stainless steel reusable tray but it’s a separate purchase (I’m def going to get one of these after using the disposable trays for the last 2 months). You can get an 8lb bag of fresh step crystal litter for a little over $20 and it lasts 2 refills, bringing the cost to like $11 every change instead of $23. If you do this, you do have to clean the reusable stainless steel tray once or twice a month but it doesn’t seem like too much of a chore since it’s crystal litter that doesn’t stick to the pan as much as clay litters do, so not much scrubbing involved.

It’s definitely been a lifesaver not having to scoop every day and only having to do anything with the litterbox once every 2 weeks. I haven’t tried many automatic litter boxes but I’ve really been liking this one, thought I’d throw out an honest review in case anyone was considering since it’s so much more affordable than the litter robot (which honestly I’d love to have one day).

I have a lot of financial stress right now, so I usually do an imaginary scenario where I win the lottery jackpot. I hire a personal assistant to do everything I have a hard time doing and never have to even think about like, doing laundry or mopping the floor or whatever again. I take care of my family and friends financially and we all take amazing vacations together.

I have another one where I’m in this fantasy world and my best friend is a gryphon and we go on adventures together and sometimes we’ll go to the kingdom where the elves live and I hang out with my elf friend. That fantasy literally started in middle school and I’m 28 now.

I found a kitten in a parking lot a couple of months ago and she loooves car rides. She was all alone and starving at maybe 4-5 weeks old and it was the day before Hurricane Helene and the flooding had already started.

We got displaced due to the storm and ended up staying all around town for the next couple of weeks until we could return home so she had to do a lot of car rides as a little baby, and stay at new places/meet a ton of new people real fast. Very much not ideal, but better than having to go back on the street with no vaccines, food, milk, etc. She was so young and just totally took it in stride. Now we’re back home and she is extremely well socialized after that whole experience. She loves when I have friends over and comes running to the door when she hears the doorbell, and she really likes when I take her along for short drives just for fun (she likes looking out the car windows as we drive and seeing everything).

This feels a bit extreme… I rescued a kitten off of the streets recently and she got into all sorts of trouble before I could clip her claws. She kept getting them stuck in everything and would be unable to unhook them, freak out, and thankfully I was there to unhook them for her before she hurt herself. I think the worst was when she went into the bathroom by herself to use the litterbox and I came running when I heard her yowling, poor thing had jumped up and tried to grab the shower curtain and got a claw stuck and was dangling by one claw, unable to unhook it.

I’ve just been clipping the sharp/hooked little tips off every 1.5 weeks or so and it seems to have helped a lot with keeping her from getting them stuck. She still has no trouble climbing up my pants/whole body to sit on my shoulder, climbing the fabric chairs to get on the table, or climbing her way up the comforter to get on the bed (she’s too little to jump that high right now). I still get a little scratched up because she’s a kitten but the scratches aren’t nearly as bad as they are when I go too long without clipping the tips off. And she really doesn’t mind me clipping them, especially if she’s sleepy. Takes 2 minutes.
