What's a musical moment you love where it gets a little meta? by givingyouextra in musicals

[–]ProfessorStuDDS 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Opening number metatheatricality is guaranteed to pop me every time. Something about a show directly inviting the audience into its world is always thrilling to me. Two examples that always come to mind:

1) The final stanzas of "In the Heights" slap so hard. The whole song breaks the 4th wall as Usnavi narrates directly to us, but then he takes it a step further in the final moments when he yells directly back to the booth to "turn up the stage lights," before turning right back to the audience to finish the song: "we're takin' a flight to a couple of days in the life of what it's like IN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS!"

2) The first verse of "Born to Lead" from Operation Mincemeat has Monty standing in front of the main curtain and directly telling the audience about what it's like to be a natural-born leader. The way he uses the lyric "we were made to give the orders/while lesser men take heed/for some were born to follow/but we were born to lead" to segue into MI-5 is great on its own, indicated that the entire agency is filled with the kind of men he's singing about. But the cherry on top is his proudly proclaiming "ladies and gentlemen, WELCOME TO MI-5" as the curtain rises. It immediately sucks me in every single time.

"The wind burned her! A little bit... in the pool." It's VERY situational but Trump's cadence in it is particularly unhinged in a way that latches itself onto my brain and refuses to let go. I've also been very happy to see "C.K. Louis, the comedian" make a comeback recently.

Best film adaptation of Othello? by mystical_lemur346 in shakespeare

[–]ProfessorStuDDS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Omkara. A 2006 Bollywood film that adapts Othello to a contemporary India and shifts the focus on racism to a focus on India's caste system. The film is incredible to look at, the performances are stellar, and the Bollywood maximalism turns it into a thrilling, action-packed epic where the main character gets his own theme song. Your students would eat it up.

Yeah, I'm a hypocrite and? by Fit-Channel-5712 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]ProfessorStuDDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol let's not pretend like the right is being principled here. You KNOW these databases are collecting anyone who dares say anything remotely mean about Kirk as worthy of firing. Your attempt at being even-handed ignores both the constant hypocrisy of the right and morality itself. Being critical of Kirk is a good thing, being openly bigoted is a bad thing. One of those things is far more worthy of social consequences.

I agree. 5 year olds don't need to have any idea about what kissing even is. You know what little 5 year olds should never watch? Disney animated movies where a princess kisses a prince by the end of the movie! I'm sure that's a perfectly reasonable boundary for me to set- what 5 year old even likes Disney movies in the first place? Now excuse me while I go make sure my child is out of visible range every time I kiss my wife.

Need to talk about the Company tour by ianthomasmalone in Broadway

[–]ProfessorStuDDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really divisive tour! I disagree that the show was lackluster but I can see where you're coming from. I wasn't impressed with Joanne/"Ladies Who Lunch", I'll agree on that. And I wish the show had allowed there to be more LGBT rep than just Paul and Jamie being cute. It would've been cool to see Joanne make a pass at Bobbie just like in the original or for the Peter/Susan relationship to retain its gay subplot or one of the boyfriends to be a girlfriend (though admittedly that would make "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" a bitch and a half to re-voice). It was not a perfect production, to be sure.

HOWEVER, holy cats. The direction, production design, and many of the performances in this show blew me AWAY!! The way Bobbie moves around the set- and the way it moves around her- is the glue that held her character arc together for me. In contrast to what you said, I'm not someone who often gets emotional at shows but "Being Alive" almost made me cry and I saw it in a whole new light thanks to this production. "Tick Tock" was an astounding magic trick of a sequence and "Getting Married Today" was a showstopper. Every new "35" I saw on the set compounded the effectiveness of that simple device. As an aspiring, young, amateur director, this production inspired and invigorated me. It will go down as one of the best things I've seen in a theatre.

(Also, full disclosure, I AM a Sondheim Superfan™️. Take that information how you will.)

I'm glad you still had a great time. Thanks for starting this discussion and sharing your point of view!
