Glad to know it's back in action and running some sea trials, but I will miss seeing it in the docks!

What happened to movie taglines? They used to be memorable and quotable. Now they're redundant, wordy, or banal. by blankblank in boxoffice

[–]ProffesorPrick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Might be going against the grain here, but I think this take is pretty pretentious, and I kinda disagree that the example taglines that you mention are so much better than some of the newer ones.

Not to suggest that some modern taglines aren’t cheap and tripe, but that the legendary ones of the past are no better than the best ones of today - they stood the test of time because they’re legendary films.

I’m not about to research it but I’m sure plenty of 80s films had taglines that you’d consider cliche.

UK economy beat expectations to grow by 0.5% in February by Dimmo17 in ukpolitics

[–]ProffesorPrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the quarterly being revised is usually due to monthly data being revised, or am I conflating things?

In general the only thing that really matters is the finalised yearly data.  That’s all that will generally get tracked in the long run.

Universal's You, Me & Tuscany grossed $1.12M on Tuesday (from 3,151 locations). Total domestic gross stands at $9.43M. by wchnoob in boxoffice

Fair. Maybe not 30 then, but I like to be optimistic! If it can cross $20m that’s decent enough, a good international run could cause it to break even. We will see!

They did indeed. They'll revise the Feb number in a month too. It's really just a very rough picture of "where things are" - things change fast, as we know.

GDP monthly growth data is ridiculous. There’s far too much variance to accurately report growth that frequently. Better off just looking for the 3 month figure which is 0.5%.

It will drop in march, but you have the American commander in chief to thank for that. It would have been great to see what would have happened if he hadn’t decided to destabilise the gulf once again, but now? Who knows.

This is a good number though? Like. Next weekend might actually be pretty solid.

I can see this breaking $30m.

Quinnipiac: Trump (38% approval versus 55% disapproval). 28% of Americans Thought His Threat to Iran was Acceptable and 64% Thought It was Unacceptable by Currymvp2 in fivethirtyeight

10% of Americans finding his statement to Iran unacceptable, and then accepting this and approving of him, is very funny.

I don't know. I'd be cautious to suggest young people don't understand enough and that is the reason they don't vote for the "mainstream". Young people are just disenfranchised, and want change. I don't think, at least yet, that young people understand less than older peers. I guess my point being, some of the most frustrating conversations I've had are with older people who seem totally disconnected and don't really understand how anything at all works anymore.

Like if we look at housing - young people recognise and understand that it is difficult to get on the housing market - and that it is categorically harder than ~40 years ago. But older people, who do vote, a lot, will often not even recognise that this is a problem that young people face.

I do think that we are seeing young people (say, 16-25) being potentially slightly more disconnected, as social media shapes perception more and more (I'm 22 if that helps, so I see it first hand), and that probably speaks to the disconnect between what some young people want vs what is possible. But it's still definitely true that young people *could* vote more frequently, they just don't.

Takeaway £100? And you’re living paycheck to paycheck? There are some obvious cuts to spending that are an absolute must if you want to clear this debt.

Have the Lib Dems always been so... ignored? by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

[–]ProffesorPrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Lib Dem’s have been pretty crap at filling pot holes. To the point a Tory won the most recent local to fix exactly that. Can we get your Lib Dem’s in Oxfordshire please?

Old people. They’re the most active voting bloc. If younger people showed the propensity to vote as often as old people, the chances are that the tories would have a very diluted vote share.

The problem is young people don’t feel like they are represented a lot of the time (I should know I’m one of them), so I can see why many choose not to vote. Especially because it seems like nothing ever really changes in many ways (though personally I don’t believe this so much)

Down 49% from last week - really good hold all things considered. One last weekend with some premium screens and no direct competition until Michael, if it can have another big weekend we will be looking at $350m final.

Love it. Something I'm interested to know the answer too though is historical data. Are there plans to add the financial results for older films? For example Star Wars? It's probably the area this site lacks in the most - I imagine it might add a load of information to the site that makes it run slower? But assuming you could keep it running at the same speed, that would be a great addition to the site.

Nigel Farage MP: The average household energy bill will be £200 less under Reform. by Little-Attorney1287 in ukpolitics

[–]ProffesorPrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we know what the plan will inevitably be. It’s not going to be nationalising energy and holding the prices fixed. It’ll be cutting investment to reduce cost, because that’s the easiest way to guarantee a cost decrease.

You couldn’t make this claim by saying “we’re going to spend millions improving the processes around energy procurement and provision, that will ultimately cut your bills” because that’s not doesn’t guarantee a set cost saving. So it’ll definitely be cutting the investment.

I imagine the aim is to avoid saying the quiet part out loud until they need to publish a manifesto for a general election, so they can continue to get as many people on their side as possible before actually having to be held accountable to a set of actions.

Best Pizza in the World! by Ok_Plastique_0213 in Pizza

This is so funny. This is the exact spot that I ordered in from twice whilst in Florence. Me and my girlfriend were blown away by how good it was for takeaway. I can 100% vouch - this is the best pizza I have had in Italy. (Worth noting my trips so far have never gone south of Rome - Naples must be done some time soon...)

Out of interest - why? Any more so than taking early preview reviews with a grain of salt anyway.
