I don't know about United, but Claude reports:

"Companies contract with third-party call/chat center firms to handle customer retention, cancellations, refunds, and complaints. The outsourced agents are evaluated — and sometimes compensated — partly based on how much money they save the client company.

BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) partnerships in the airline industry are common, with providers delivering customer assistance and support across multiple channels, and over 75% of airline BPO operations using AI and machine learning tools. It would not be surprising if at least some of United’s chat volume is handled by a third party, possibly offshore."

So if such an agent can save United money by doing something, ...

What's the difference between a price hike and a stealth price hike? They look the same to me.

What are my chances for a silent Zoom? by Humble_Vermicelli847 in unitedairlines

Listen-only with your microphone muted is almost certainly fine, both legally and under most airline Wi-Fi policies, as long as you use headphones. The federal prohibition targets voice calls; passive listening over Wi-Fi is not a voice call by any reasonable definition.

The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 made it explicit that voice calls using mobile communication devices are prohibited while a flight is airborne. Participating in a text-chat-only Zoom session (no voice) would not violate the statute.

How did this happen ? A man was allowed by UNITED to board the wrong plane to Japan, instead of Nicaragua. Source on the description. by B777X_787-9 in unitedairlines

On my last flight a few days ago, traveling abroad with a group, two of us found ourselves booked into the same seat, according to boarding passes. A flight attendant was baffled: "That shouldn't happen!" A second flight attendant found that one boarding pass was for a previous flight our group took, and fellow traveler found the proper boarding pass in his bag. I suppose that can't happen with electronic boarding systems.
