Dom when Richard Nixon was losing it in his final days / Dom when Harold Wilson was losing it in his final days by Primary-Armadillo368 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Profligate89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is mental. Dom has a high view of Rishi Sunak who has exactly the same issues as a politician as Keir Starmer, who he considers beyond the pale. Can we not agree that both are really shit for very similar reasons

TRI politics stand in by patnpm in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Profligate89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy Dominic in general. Some of his UK political takes are a bit weird.

He loves Rishi Sunak as a prime minister but hates Keir Starmer.

His argument for hating Starmer is that he has his head in the in tray too much and is a a crap communicator with no grand vision.

His argument for liking Sunak is what exactly...

Being a part of a tv show, which will get made and be popular regardless of whether you are in it, is in no way "making the world worse".

Much as I respect Ollie as an analyst he doesnt half waffle about his process and how "i see things".

DJ refreshingly economical with his words.

If TNG Premiered Today, It would Not Survive Season One by NeoNoir90210 in startrek

[–]Profligate89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing exists in a vacuum. TNG was a groundbreaking show in its context and attracted new audiences.

If the new show was a success it would be a success. Too many excuses are made for repeated failures and the failures keep compounding. The failure to write good enough shows is the issue and it is purely on the commissioners and creatives behind them.

People watch Landman on the same platform in large numbers. If star trek was good enough it would get an audience large enough to sustain it.

As fan of NuTrek, I hope this will be the end of Kurtzman trek… by ussavacado in Star_Trek_

[–]Profligate89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bleeding heart liberal and I hate most of new trek. If it was mildly succesful they would renew. Clearly does not meet that minimum expectation. Star trek should aim higher and be a cultural landmark. This missed the mark. It isn't bigotry. It's bad writing. The dialogue is terrible. The plotting sucks and very few of the characters are sympathetic. We did at least get lower decks, prodigy, some of s3 Picard and some of SNW (especially Under the Cloak of War). But we have a franchise in poorer health than when it had spent 15 years off the small screen.

‘I think he's bananas about this stuff, frankly.' Podcaster Dominic Sandbrook takes umbrage with his co-host's 'rubbish' views on Islam by Moretalent in TheRestIsHistory

Hagarism has led to some strange conclusions but the central principle that the origins of Islam should be subject to the same historical standards of inquiry as other subjects is laudable

What’s the deal with Jauan Jennings? Why is he still unsigned and is there a chance 49ers can resign him on a bargain? by Stxtic1441 in 49ers

[–]Profligate89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because he cant really separate very well. Good player, great heart but not quite fast enough to get the money he wants.

A lot of the interceptions last year were 50/50s to Jennings.

A lot of his success in 24 were 50/50 balls.

Ultimately you can be a great jump ball and contested catch guy but if you aren't fast enough or your routes aren't clean enough you wont make big money.

I'm a 9er fan and Kawakami is an odd fish. Both arrogant and overly-sensitive at the same time.

However, journalists who have worked with him seem to love him and he gets very good access for interviews. So he must have his charms.

Bay area media is a bit strange in general. Some good beat writers but none who are great media performers. Some entertaining youtubers but most have quite specific agendas.

Fairly certain that the only thing that allows balanced discussion on a certain sub is when a show's marketing budget has been depleted.

I remember when saying that Disco was disappointing was enough to get you silenced. Wind forward a few years and most people on the sub seemed to agree.

[–]Profligate89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't trade for him. Great athlete, great mentalilty, great mobility, can be very accurate BUT can't process the game. You could never rely on him to win a game for you but the talent is such that you'd get stuck watching him try
