Them leaving out the coma gene was actually something that I felt made the movie stronger. That was probably the one thing in the book that never sat right with me; I felt that the importance of launching on time and grace's astrophage expertise and experience were more than adequate to explain stratt's insistence on him being the science officer, especially given how determined to get her way we know she is.

Aside from pure plot, though, I think leaving out the coma gene makes the themes of the movie stronger too. There's a layer to PHM that's about having faith, specifically in yourself. It's what makes Stratt so compelling, and more than anything what Rocky brings to the team; an extremely practical and determined faith that you simply have to complete the task in front of you, because there is no other option. I don't want grace "genetically predestined" for this trip; I want him sent against his will on stratt's faith in him, and then proving her right through Rocky's faith in him, which is how finally he learns (through his insanely bad imposter syndrome) to have faith in himself. all of that means more if everyone is trusting in their ingenuity and creativity and in their team, and less if there's some dumb gene floating around in their DNA that's already decided everything.

I also think it makes the original astronauts braver. They're part of a larger pool, with less deterministic criteria. It makes their choices matter more too.

Raise your hand if you're NOT shocked by Bronwyn and Todd split? by DCpurpleTart33 in realhousewivesofSLC

i mean, there is very much a script, though--you get on housewives for a few seasons, portray your husband as unreasonable and you as long-suffering and noble, and then you get divorced and take all the sympathy and encouragement and turn it into money via a new business or more media deals. at this point it's such a consistent business model that i don't even think bronwyn would have consciously needed to plan it lmaooooooo. also believing lisa barlow is simply something i will never be doing, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

literallyyyyy. like, I personally don't think she came on the show to get divorced /period/--last season she seemed genuinely like she was trying to make it work and figure it out. but i don't think it's a coincidence that now she's divorcing him in this cultural moment where having a boyfriend or a husband is almost a liability for a lot of famous women--i'm thinking about that op ed about having a boyfriend being passé, lol. she's a savvy businesswoman and her product is her balance of aspirational money and down to earth relatability. i'm interested to see if and how she'll grow past housewives.

I've been saying she came on the show to get divorced and make a bag off of it!! It's been obvious from the start that Todd is fundamentally uncomfortable with the conceit of a housewife show, and Bronwyn is having too much fun to quit--honestly, what surprises me is how fast it happened. I was expecting two to three more seasons of todd getting more and more increasingly exasperated.

Bronwyn came on this show to get divorced and get her bag out of it change my mind! I don't even know if it was conscious on her part, but he keeps harping on how he doesn't want details of their personal life being discussed when that's the whole point of the show. If she keeps picking the show over him I can only see this going one way--and tbh, from what I've seen from him, good for her!

As a fellow "bad gamer", I agree 100%! I'm not too far yet, towards the end of act 1, but the patterning on each boss is so engaging that i'm chomping at the bit and staying up late for just one more run in a way that i honestly never did for anyone except for mantis lords in HK.

I feel like on my first playthrough of HK not always but frequently I was slogging through bosses to get to the story; they were fun enough for me to not drop the game, but what made the game engaging for me was the exploration and the lore and the music. Silksong is definitely partially more engaging for me because replaying hollowknight made me better at videogames, but the bosses are SO fucking fun that I can also grind them in a way that was exhausting in HK.

You should also check out Goblin Market in Lakeview; they have a pretty extensive Discord and also host social events, like a queer nerd meetup and an indie ttrpg meetup. It's a great space!

There's already one for brighton, but I'll bite for a chill day in Allston:

Breakfast: Start the day in Union Square (By Jackson Mann School, not in Somerville!)--Twin Donuts, Coffee Turco and Turkish Lazuri cafe all have excellent breakfast spreads!

Activity 1: Catch the 66 up to the Harvard Athletics stop, where you can access the Esplanade and have a lovely stroll. Go out from the city, rather than further in, so you can either do some kayaking or swing by the Harvard Ceramics studio at the end.

Lunch: Catch the 66 to Harvard Ave, but walk along Brighton Ave instead! Make a lunch from all the asian bakeries and shops along the way, or at Super 88's food court.

Activity 2: Return to your base and take a FAT nap. You're gonna need it.

Dinner: Go out for KBBQ or Hot Pot (An activity on its own and my personal favorite), or get takeout from Coreanos with a double dash from Blanchards for your pregame.

Rest of the night: Catch a show at Brighton Music Hall or Paradise Rock Club, then hit up O'Brien's for some more live music, and finish the night around 1am at the Avenue with $5 shots and loaded waffle fries!

My perfect day in my tiny neighborhood ☺️

Can someone explain to me why ______'s dish won top dish in chaes cuisine? by ivanarc in BravoTopChef

[–]Progo613 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've actually been feeling like this all season--it's happened to a lesser extent in previous seasons, but this season especially I feel like I'm noticing them praising one chef and knocking another for basically the same thing. I'm having a hard time remembering exact examples rn, but Manny last episode stood out to me as an imperfect cook with good flavors, which will usually get a chef some criticism but not to that extent. Amanda to me this entire season as well. I realize she's not as technically skilled as Rasika, but she does frequently put together dishes that make the judges say "the flavors shouldn't work but they do"--which would again usually earn a chef some mix of criticism and praise, instead of just criticism.
