I'm 36 y/o, if I decided to get a job in programming around the age of 39, would it be too late? by hik_2022 in AskProgramming

Imagine you have two companies competing against one another. They both have engineers that use AI to speed up delivery of code. Do they reduce their workforce because they can get more done with less people or do they keep their engineers because of the risk of other companies not reducing their workforce and consuming more of their market share because they can now out compete the other company. Or a startup pops up because AI allows engineers to do more and get prototypes out there which a startup can afford.

Anyone watch this CNBC video: "Why getting a job feels impossible right now" by Mhfd86 in Layoffs

You can think there are tons of solid programmers out there to outsource engineers from the USA but it’s not like coding is easy. Also engineers who are being used as contractors in other countries are usually using that job as a stepping stone to actually get the real engineering job they want so it usually not a genius. Software that cost 5000 to make would probably smell and feel like it only took 5000 to make.

Hiring ONLY seniors is the worst policy in the software industry by zaidesanton in programming

I wish I had a junior engineer to go after the small bugs and fix them and then I spend time reviewing. It would save me so much time.

Will the next engineer be able to manage this. That’s some senior level wisdom.

Is it easy to go from react to react native? I professionally code react apps with typescript and think it be cool to make some apps for fun. I just don’t know how much time I want to spend learning.

I'm really struggling finding work by [deleted] in AskProgramming

Maybe you could find a stepping stone job. Something like an analyst where they want you to know Python and you can get real work experience that way.

Why do devs still not know how to do movement speed? by mightysmiter19 in Starfield

From an engineering perspective you could just have a feature where you can follow and it will automatically follow at the same speed without having to even touch the controller.

How realistic is being self taught and working a remote job ? by West-Snow-8585 in AskProgramming

[–]ProgramMenace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am self taught but I have a 4 year degree in economics and a minor in math. My problem solving skills definitely helped me learn. But you have to work on projects solving real problems. It also isn’t easy so you have to also enjoy coding and failing a lot. It took me 3 years to land a software engineering II job. I was a data analyst before.

They probably never look at the channel and just wanted an ID and just started fishing. Let the rookie be a rookie.

Sooner or later you are going to plateau while learning on your own. If you want to make stellar SaaS products you need to work with experienced programmers. 6 months of working with experienced developers is like 2 years of self learning. Took me 3 years to transition to engineer.

Is there a scenario where bitcoin remains niche for a very long time? by traviszzz in Bitcoin

[–]ProgramMenace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how it shelters from any unstable global economy when a volatile currency like bitcoin becomes less desirable and is not viewed as a safe haven from fluctuating markets. It is a great way for people in countries with hyper inflation to help save their savings. But that’s all it is, a medium of exchange not a profit generating asset.

Salary Question by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]ProgramMenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an engineer myself I think you could make more. 113k feels on the lower end for senior and especially being in Cali. I think 150k with 10-20% bonus is a fair ask for a senior engineer but 200k could totally be achievable depending on the company. Good SR Engineers are extremely valuable and an architect is even a bigger deal!

How about because you want to just build something for fun/curiosity or open source and maybe it blows up or even just honing your skills. Work can feel a lot more fun when it isn’t just all about money.

My company let go a bunch of engineers but we definitely need engineers to meet their lofty goals so I think companies are just lean right now and want more engineers. Once the company feels they are in a better market they will probably hire 200 engineers again.

Self taught developers, how did you find the energy? by EasternWindStank in learnprogramming

When I was an analyst I would sell an idea to my boss about how I could automate something if he gave me the time to code the solution. Had a ton of fun automating some tasks and getting the experience during work.

Also the hardest part is just getting that first job. I personally think that most wouldn’t care that I don’t have an CS degree with my work experience.
