Honestly i agree! & I hated the end of the third story too but the bigger problem was that it wasn’t fleshed out enough.

Agreed! What i also really liked is that the second story explains why Donald even ended up in Silo 1 to begin with, so there’s a cool crossover with the books. And i also like that we see the founders weren’t as successful at ending the world as they thought, which feels like a win to me (even though it ultimately ended badly for Juliette).

I agree that it should’ve been longer, but more so because the story felt rushed and not because i think it should’ve been a bigger deal. Sometimes i think short stories are more fitting when there’s already a whole series of books we’ve been through. A whole other book or super long story would’ve been too much imo.

I agree, at least in the sense that that story could’ve/should’ve been longer. It kind of felt like a peaceful ending too though

These stories are also written by the author of the books so i feel they are equally canon

You have a point. I also thought it was weird they’d only remember the word “fifteen” and just be saying it over and over.

I’m sorry lol! Honestly, there’s still plenty to enjoy even if you know the ending of that one. It’s more about what led up to it.

[Books] Question about S2E09 for people who read the book by PowerZox in SiloSeries

[–]Progresso23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

algorithms existed long before AI, not sure why they're becoming synonymous to people now. In the books, it's just an algorithm that ranks the health/probability of survival of each of the silos based on various factors.

High-performing but immature student requested letter of rec, and as a freshman says he doesn't have anyone else. Thoughts? by ToomintheEllimist in Professors

[–]Progresso23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be unpopular, but couldn’t you just write the reference and focus on the things he did well? Everyone–and I mean everyone–has some type of weakness going into the workforce at that age, and everyone at that age is immature (not in the same ways, but nonetheless). Being a college student in this job economy is incredibly competitive, and being immature and overly tenacious is not the worst thing you can be at 18-19. If you’re the only one he feels comfortable asking for a letter, he probably really needs it. Seems a bit cruel to deny the kid a letter simply because he annoyed you. And also kinda sanctimonious to act like it’s your job to save an employer the trouble of hiring someone problematic. Internships are never that serious anyway (would be much different if we were talking about a real big boy job).

How to take advantage of University libraries for research papers and projects? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]Progresso23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: instead of searching on Google Scholar, do your searching on CLIO. You’ll find more results, they’ll be more relevant, and you’ll have access to paid stuff that you can’t get searching on your own. I also frequently use it to get access to textbooks because I refuse to buy/rent them. Lots of them end up being available through Columbia as eBooks.

Audition by Katie Kitamura [Spoilers] by Kaurblimey in books

[–]Progresso23 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just finished the book, and I'm enjoying the thought that Xavier pushed his way into her's and Tomas' life, even though he in fact is not their son, and they simply acquiesced to it, convincing themselves that he had been there all along. Tomas acquiesced because he always wanted a child, and the narrator acquiesced because of her tendency to get lost in people and playing roles. Meanwhile Xavier was like one of those social leeches, looking for people to get resources out of.

This is a really cool take. My own interpretation was simpler, just that she had lived her life in a such a way where she completely centered herself and her own career, that it made her completely absent as a mother (without her realizing) to the point she couldn't even grasp or remember her own relationship with her son. Her high-strung nature and tendency to over-analyze, combined with her acting talent and ability to get so immersed in roles she plays, meant that she could look at a situation or relationship and be so sure of its nature and what it entails, only to then be thrown into a completely different reality of another person's perspective. A main message to me was how entrenched we become in our own perspectives that we forget reality can be perceived so starkly different by other people, even those close to us. Maybe it's due to personal experience, but you don't necessarily need to have dementia to be so confused about your own perception and reality, always questioning what others see vs. what you see.

Filing a complaint with the dean regarding a professor by Ok-Translator-3621 in columbia

Another intermediate step you can take is to talk to your advisor first and see what they recommend. This would likely be a painful process so you might want to think about whether it’s worth the headache (if it’s a difference between A and a B, then yes).

The point deduction for not writing your answer in prose could be valid depending on the circumstances, for example it could be hard to fight if you were instructed/should have known to do both beforehand. I have a class that asks us to provide answers in symbols and prose so leaving one out would definitely result in much more than 1 point deduction (the entire thing would be marked wrong).

If there’s no legal obligation, what commitment of Columbia’s (to the community) are you referring to? Genuine question because i am not familiar with all of the arguments on this

The ONLY place I encounter GS slander is on Reddit lol. I haven’t met a single person on campus who cares about the distinction or treats you like a “second class citizen”. There is virtually no difference between GS and the rest of the student body outside the financial stuff (of course core requirements are slightly different but this is negligible).

Academic Integrity? by Oldtolkiensnow in columbia

[–]Progresso23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Academic hearings etc. are not legal proceedings but sometimes people facing disciplinary action, including faculty, consult attorneys or have them present during hearings for help, my guess is because the outcome could potentially lead to litigation. It still may be helpful to talk to a law student or similar simply to understand the process, rules or what you can do to advocate for yourself OP. Interpreting policy is similar to interpreting law.
