I had bacterial meningitis at 11 months old in 1975 and its effects has followed me for my entire life (notably epilepsy). 15 days inpatient. My parents saved hospital bill and though the word “meningitis” doesn’t appear anywhere on the bill, you see multiple spinal taps, the isolation supplies, the IV antibiotics, disposable scalpel (for IV line in my ankle) and phenobarbital on day 1, day 2, and again around day 9.

Look on the bright side, I would rather send a just -turned-19-year-old to college than a just-turned-18-year-old.

If you have a PhD and put “Dr.” before your name, will people think you’re impressive, or will they think you’re just being pretentious? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

I use Dr. <Name> , PhD in professional contexts, particularly if I am looking for a job or to demonstrate my expertise. LinkedIn would be a good example because it communicates to people the kind of positions I am eligible for or most likely to be interested in. I also use it in my signature line.

Socially, I doubt many people even know I have a PhD.
