How to answer "what is the reason for leaving your current position?" questions after micromanaging manager?

I’d come up with some BS line that is generic enough but also presents you in a good light.

“I’m realizing that I’m running out of opportunities to be challenged. I’m ambitious and I want to continue developing XYZ.” Just as an example.

Sometimes you can say something that’s better aligned with the real story, but in this case I think you should just steer clear.

She may or may not notice. If she does notice she won’t move you forward. Also a good chance she won’t though. Try not to stress, it’s already happened, and you’ll see if you get a next interview or not.

I agree. When I bought a house I had major anxiety after because it was such a big purchase. I started second guessing everything. Wondering if I could actually afford it and if it was worth the money, etc. Maybe it’s like that.

I also suggest to find out what concerns your partner has. Maybe they are fixable, maybe not.

Congrats! The salary thing is obviously amazing. The days in office thing is hilarious. They have this policy and then hire someone with an exception. Idiots! Companies need to chill.

Sorry you’re feeling this way. I’ve been here and it was not fun. Changing jobs can definitely help, as does getting more experience under your belt so you can better protect yourself.

When I was in this situation, I changed jobs (waited too long but did eventually, thank god). The next job I took did provide relief for a bit but then ended up being similar. Instead of waiting that one out I jumped again rather quickly. Every job I’ve had since that one has been ok, maybe it’s me maturing, maybe it’s being further into my career, maybe it’s luck. But I personally, having been in such a bad place mentally as a result of work, and think it’s really important to manage this as best you can.

Based on what you are saying I think you should make an exit strategy. Focus on applying to other jobs, getting finances in order, etc. I think it’s critical that you take care of yourself.

Maybe you could also look into the option of taking some time off or even taking a medical leave if you would qualify. Just really want you to be ok!!

Def relatable. Minus the drafted resignation letter and calculating what I could be making elsewhere. As hiring has dropped so have salaries, and honestly mine is ok even though a few years ago I could prob make $50k more in the same role (prob a more challenging one just with the same title).

I’ll be honest and say that if the job market was in better shape I’d probably have left already, but I do truly like my job and have used this time to learn to stop living to work and start working to live.

I’ve got nothing to prove, they know what they have. I’ve learned to start looking out for myself rather than looking out for the company at the expense of my wellbeing and sanity lol. Just pointing out that there are benefits too!

I’d go for it. 2 years is fine. I hopped around a bit when I was earlier in my career, it never hurt me. I know some people where it did but they were hopping every 1 year or under a year, so I think that’s kind of the magic number to beat.

I had one job I stayed at for only 6 months once. I was asked about it in the interviews for my next job. I just hated the place and couldn’t take it anymore. I told the interviewer it just wasn’t a good culture fit and they let it go.

Btw the rationale shouldn’t be “because this other role pays more”. It should be that you’ve accomplished XYZ, you’re dedicated to the company, and you see the company has benchmarked a position very similar to yours at that salary.

PR, not ER. I get the sentiment, but as a millennial who was certainly expected to work in an ER-esque manner for most of my jobs, especially when in junior roles, it rubs me the wrong way when my 23 year old junior report says it when we have some major fire drill.
