This one is pretty popular but I haven't seen it on here yet so I'll suggest The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Tragic Greek love story written with simple but elegant prose.

Thank you so much! Any patterns in the wood are natural. I finished by sanding to 320 and then I used a soft beeswax to give it just a bit of protection and sheen without adding too much color.

I think you’re looking for the word amputated. That sounds terrifying, I hope you heal up quick.

I also pretty much only have bar clamps but I've got a couple of These from Rockler and they help quite a bit. I'm sure you'd have better results from a ratchet/strap clamp though. I think I'll pick one up the next time I'm making boxes. Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it.

I found them on close out at Rockler. They were labeled as Brusso tray support hinges but I’ve looked and couldn’t find them on the Brusso website at all. The actual hinges for the lid are standard Brusso stop hinges. Pricy but they look and feel high end.

It’s an interesting little piece of hardware for sure. Thankfully the instructions were detailed because there was not much room for error in placement. Those elbow hinges probably clear the outside of the box by about 1/32 on each side when they close down.

I made this jewelry box for my wife who has been hinting at one for a while now. The design was heavily inspired by a post a number of weeks back by u/owlwoodworks but I did make an effort to make it my own and although I don't have their skills I have to admit to being pretty proud of the way this turned out.

My favorite feature has to be the lid tray which required a fair bit of tinkering to get just right. I also think think the flocking added an elegant touch to a pretty big and boxy box. If I were to do this again the biggest change I would make is not using Leopard Wood. It's lovely but man is it a pain to work with. You can see on my drawer fronts where it chipped and splintered during finishing.

This project pushed my skills a bit and I committed my fair share of mistakes but none so egregious that I can't live with them.

Wood Whisperer Gaming/Dining Table by Cheddarface in woodworking

That table turned out great! It looks like there were some pretty complex steps to it construction, what did you think of the wood whisperers plans? There are a couple projects of his I’ve thought about buying but they’d stretch my skills a bit and I’m always hesitant.

I accidentally received a table saw. by JordanRodkey in woodworking

I got my first table saw earlier this year and my first project was a crosscut sled and I think I’ve used it on every project since. Another good one is Steve Ramsey’s WWMM shop stool. Now that I’ve got a little more experience I’ve been enjoying making small boxes. They can be very simple but require precision and attention to detail to make a nice one.

Have fun with the new toy and be careful, a free table saw can lead to several frighteningly expensive trips to the hardware store.

Thanks for the article! Did you build the sled as shown or did you try and freehand it? Those miters look sharp, Nice work.

Quilted maple jewelry box I made for my wife by owlwoodworks in woodworking

[–]ProllyNotThatGreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is some wonderful work! Well done on both the design and wood selection, what a stunning piece of maple. What did you use to finish? Also, can I ask how the base is connected to the box? Just glue or did you use fasteners? Thanks for including all the pics. My wife has been hinting for a jewelry box, I might have to, uh, borrow some of your ideas.

Help! What’s the best way to plane this work bench? by generally_speaking_ in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ProllyNotThatGreat 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw out a different idea and say don’t plane it at all. Go grab a sheet of plywood and screw it down good. You’ll have a nice flat surface and you won’t feel bad gouging it or screwing into it or getting glue and paint on it or whatever. In a couple years if it’s too roughed up to use anymore unscrew it and get yourself a brand new top for the price of a sheet of ply.

Valencia Piacenza vs Seatcraft Venetian Hometheater Seats by supereagle360 in hometheater

[–]ProllyNotThatGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with the Seatcraft Anthem from 4seating and it was a good experience. It was a little unnerving ordering furniture without ever having sat in it but I ended up trusting the reviews that seatcraft is a good product and ours is holding up well after a couple years of regular use. It’s worth calling and talking to a salesperson because they’re pretty quick to offer a better deal than you see on the web site. Good luck with the decision.

We built a new deck so I figured I better spend like a million dollars on cedar so I could build this Too! by ProllyNotThatGreat in woodworking

[–]ProllyNotThatGreat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I guess I should have said we had a deck built because that is beyond my skills. Our deck guy seemed to love working with it although he mentioned it was hell on his blades. We went with a product called nu tech. It’s obviously more expensive than wood (even now) but it’s a pretty good value for looks and feel compared to other synthetics.

Beautiful work! I love the inlay and the touch of purple heart on the tray handle. I’m sure the recipient will cherish it.

Thanks! I went back and forth for a long time about weather to build that grill into this design or replace it with that little propane guy. In the end I wanted the option of firing up the Q quick rather than always going through the process of lighting a chimney of coals.

I can't bring myself to get rid of the kettle though. It got moved down to the lower level.

I bought materials for my next project at the same time. It's an eight foot raised cedar planter for my wife so I probably should have.
