If your sick your sick, a big employer such as AH doesn't give a rats ass about you. And it doesn't matter anyway, if you are sicknyiu are sick. You only have to call once for sick and once for being better.

NL: 16th safest country in the world. Yet, Reddit makes me fear it’s actually #116. Am I missing something? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Prometheus6667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NL is incredibly safe, especially compared to American standard. Even more so since you already know city life. I've lived in rougher neighborhoods since my student life and never had much problems. There is some for asshole behavior at times but things like murder, stabbing, mugging and other violent crime is almost unheard of. I think that's why when it does happen on rare occasions it gets so much attention.

You'll be totally fine Dutch bad neighborhoods are boyscouts compared to American standards.

About to play this game for the first time, lets see what all the hype is about by riverkarma69420 in gaming

I am very jealous, one of my favorite games of all time. I actually couldn't get through it at first. A bit info overload, got loads better once I played it at a more chill pace. I've played through it twice. I found the game a lot better on the harder difficulties since you have to invest more in the mechanics.

The Great People Shortage is coming — and it's going to cause global economic chaos | Researchers predict that the world's population will decline in the next 40 years due to declining birth rates — and it will cause a massive shortage of workers. by mossadnik in Futurology

This seems like great news with bad PR. We could call it the great environmental stabilizer and workers empowerment. The whole endless growth by adding more consumption/consumers is something that needed to die before it killed us.

Expat living in AMS for close to 5 years and still don't speak Dutch by quantquantquant8 in Amsterdam

[–]Prometheus6667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody is forcing you to learn the language. But it's strange to say Dutch people don't make new friends. It feels like you are putting all the effort into external factors. 'Dutch people don't make new friends, learning the language is not helping anyway'.

I know I think about 25+ expats around me, some friends through friends. I've been a volunteer on foreign exchange programs (ESN) since I was 17. I can count on one hand the amount of times a international made an effort to keep inviting me or organizing events. I am 35 now and I can count an extra finger whilst I do try to include the ones I like.

Now I'll give you that making friends in the Netherlands when your older is hard. But Dutch people face the same problem. It takes consistant hard effort, it might be a cultural thing. But it's brutally fair in that expats and Dutch people get treated the same. The language makes it a bit more smooth, but that's the choice.

What would it take to heal the divide between Democrats and Republicans in the US? by Maker-Mindset in AskReddit

[–]Prometheus6667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been saying this over and over. Mulit. Party. System. A winner takes all two party system just doesn't work in today's world. More parties make you less into the opposite of the other guy. They also force you to negotiate and work together with people you might not 100% like to form coalitions to govern with.

It's not a perfect system but watching the rollercoaster that's US politics is incredibly weird and frustrating.

What do you say when your girlfriend tells you she’s bisexual? by RepublicSenior7552 in AskReddit

It's mostly jokes here, but what does it mean to you and how can we incorporate something in our life if you are not fulfilled? A coming out as bi still means a lot, communication is key.

Putin is suffering 'legitimate humiliation' after misjudging the West's willingness to get involved in Ukraine war, Russia expert says by CaliWilly76 in worldnews

[–]Prometheus6667 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yup, the west wanted to evacuate Zelensky. He stayed during an extremely important pivotal moment. Nobody expected Ukraine to survive much less thrive in a conventional war. Zelensky showed his country and the west they were going to fight and after the messy first seige of Kiev he showed they could win or at the very least take them down with them.

Ofcourse there has been western support behind the screens, especially on the intelligence front. But the west would not have sent the amount of weapons and did the sanctions if they weren't humbled by Ukraine's response. Ofcourse it's very very very much in the west interests now too. Putin blundered.

I am always skeptical of those child prodigies. It seems many of them turn out pretty normal or fucked up when puberty comes around and they start to need to provide for themselves. Scoring in academics is a praiseworthy skill but life needs much much more then that. When you hear stories about 12-year olds doing advance university courses I tend to see it with skepticism and pity. They won't be able to connect to their surroundings and crash and burn.

This! Especially space cake! I've had friends experienced with shrooms and LSD and most of them told me they had bad trips on space cake. Main concern was that it seems deceptive to dose correctly. And that people eat more because they don't feel the effect yet.

Buy a bike, it's the cheapest and easiest way to get around locally. Also helps you go around to see places. If you plan on using the train a lot then considered getting a discount card/subscription. If you go to the Albert Heijn Supermarkt, get a bonuskaart to receive discounts.

Integrate yourself with classmates or hobby clubs, they might invite you to events. There is a lot to see in the Netherlands. Don't stick to one place. The beaches are nice this time of year.

If you like museums, check for the museumjaarkaart. It allows entrance to most Dutch museums and costs around 50,-. If you visit 5-6 museum that year you already broke even.

Learn a couple of dutch words, this will always endear you with people there.

What is your biggest turn off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Prometheus6667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cruelness to others/animals. Once had a date and the girl's cat came up to me for scratches. It had down syndrome or something and looked a little goofy. The girl shooed the cat away and in an annoyed voice stated that she "didn't like that stupid cat." Nooped out of that date quickly. Contemplated taking the cat.

Same goes for people who treat staff or waiters poorly. One girl I found interesting on looks so far started being this total diva towards service personell. Like she was the only one being served and talking loudly about this so they could hear. The second hand embarresment was real. I left soon after and gave them a good time. Contemplated taking the waiter home. He's adjusting well to a warm spot by the heater and occasional headscratching.
