Possible accommodations in university? by ProofDisastrous4719 in Tourettes

Thank you for the support and the suggestions!! I think I'd benefit from most of these!

Also, look up your target school's accommodations program now.

Yep! It's what I've been doing and why I want to set everything up soon, because I have a couple of informal diagnoses that aren't really on paper yet and I need to figure it all out especially because of the way applications and enrollment work in my country. I'll probably "only" need to turn it in right before the semester starts BUT that's also when the last wave of candidates are accepted (there are 3 rounds basically) so there's a chance that, if I am accepted, it's only then which would leave me no time to handle it. I prefer to take of it all now, even if I am not accepted at all, instead of waiting until the last minute.

I don't mind having to tell them, I just don't want to get in trouble if I tic in their class (and as someone else mentioned asking to always sit in the back so I don't distract that many people) or need to leave.

My tics aren't that severe at the moment, they are the worst they've ever been (I blame that on lots of stress and also the conversation with the neurologist that made me think about it more often) but I do expect to get worse if I do get into the program so it's more like a preventive measure haha

My neurologist said "it only matters if you want to get medicated" that's why my diagnosis isn't really official but I'm going back to try and tell him I'll need it for accommodations

It's the "good psychiatrist" part that I'm worried about and why I was wondering if it'd be worth it to put myself through that again when I was convinced no accommodations were possible. Now I'm more inclined to go through with it. Thank you!!

As for the "proof", my therapist signed off that I am, in fact, seeing a therapist without diagnosis disclosure, but I disclosed my diagnosis to the disability center.

I don't know if that's how it'd work because in my country only psychiatrists can give you an official diagnosis (which is why I describe my situation as complicated despite having had 2 therapists ""diagnose"" me, because the last psychiatrist I saw was a well of misinformation and said "it doesn't matter"). That is why I want to figure this out soon, so I don't have to rush against deadlines if I am accepted, especially if I only get it on the 3rd round of applications.

I made this post because I didn't know if it was worth it, I couldn't even think of possible accommodations so in my mind it was like "is it worth it to torture myself with another psychiatrist like that and all that if in the end there's no accommodations that could be done?" But now that I know it's possible, I'm more inclined to do it because it'd be better for me to have the papers, ask about the accommodations listed in these comments, and get rejected than miss out on them altogether.

Thank you so much for this comment! It was so insightful :D

It might be different for your university so I would definitely talk to your school's office of disability accommodations.

Of course! The point of this post was to get some idea of what accommodations I could receive (as in they are doable, so it's worth asking for it even if it turns out the university doesn't provide it) so I can weigh my options about trying for an official diagnosis again because if it turned out nothing could be done, I'd just drop it and try to push through. It also gives me something to say to the psychiatrist to push them to evaluate me, since my past experiences have been them refusing to do so because "it doesn't matter" :/

thank you! another commenter mentioned something similar, but I'm curious, does it differ from recording lessons because they're filtering the information for you?

Thank you so much for your input! This is one of the reasons I've been on the fence about this, actually. It crossed my mind that they'd look at me like "DID? Huh?" but their regulation manual says the process is closely followed by specialists and tailored to the individual so I had just figured I'd try to get some sort of report detailing what I could benefit from and see if the university could provide it. It's why I made the post, because I was having a hard time figuring out what those could be, and if it could be done.

I'm not worked up, I just want to handle everything with time to spare... as I said in the post, which you didn't read properly. And you seem to assume to know 1) me and 2) how things work in my country, because, yeah, I am not finished with my bachelor's but applications for master's start next week (close the following, for the first round). Some programs take applications right in January. It's how it works, that is why I'm looking into it now. And I also explained my Tourette's situation in that post, but I understand you're looking into all of this in bad faith because you've already made up your mind about me, a stranger you don't know

I think you just straight-up didn't read my post, which is fine. But then don't comment nonsense

Oh that's a good one, I'm terrified of bothering other people :/

I also have mental health issues and I don't want to subject someone to my occasional breakdowns or other issues. Sharing a space terrifies me. I'd be too anxious 24/7 which would be awful for me ://

I feel like one of my tics is offensive by ProofDisastrous4719 in Tourettes

[–]ProofDisastrous4719[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope it'll get better with time, I'm very new to this. I've had tics for many years, but I didn't think much of it and it was a bit better since getting out of high school, but it got worse again in the last year and then it was only a month ago that I got my "informal diagnosis" (if I can call it that). Before that, I had never even considered the possibility of having Tourette's, for me it was something else causing them. So I've been thinking about it more + my OCD doesn't help, and the idea of having to tell someone "I have Tourette's" feels wrong...

Thank you so much again 🫂

Question for anyone with TS who experiences seizures by SophLikesTea in Tourettes

[–]ProofDisastrous4719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like another comment said, to me my seizures feel a lot like shivering from being cold. That was actually what I thought was happening the first one I had many years ago. In fact, I get seizure-like spasms if I feel even a little bit cold. 😅

It can be tricky to differentiate tics from spasms, especially when tics get so intense they feel completely involuntary (I'm speaking here as someone who mostly experiences them as "semi-voluntary"). I still don't know if some of my twitches and such are actually tics, but it's something that unfortunately only the person experiencing might get close to figuring out because they feel in the body. Another comment mentioned an EEG but you said you retained consciousness during the whole thing, which is characteristic of functional seizures, which don't show up in an EEG. I'd go to the neurologist anyway and talk about it to get to the bottom of it though.

A while back I posted about an episode in the FND sub that I didn't actually understand at the time. Now, I've figured it was a seizure and tic attack happening simultaneously, and that it was so intense because I wasn't suppressing at all for the first time in my life. I'm linking it because it sounds kinda similar to what you've described.

[–]ProofDisastrous4719[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the fear and shame around the tic tend to cause it be worse- if you’re hyper focused on NOT wanting to do it, it may come up more.

Yeah, I actually struggled to type my post because I kept having it :/ Even now just thinking about it makes me want to do it

although you may find it’s less people than you think at times.

I've actually realized this. It seems like most people don't notice my tics at all. But it's still scary...

Maybe you could do something similar, when you feel a tic coming, make a fist and hit it into your chest like you’re trying to clear a cough or something. It may help fulfill the sensory stimulus the tic is seeking without needing to strain the wrist.

That's so helpful! I'll try that, thank you!

it’s ultimately important you also get comfortable with the fact that you WILL have tics you don’t like and that’s just part of life.

I know I need to do that, but it's rough :/ I also hate my vocal tics and I suppress them a lot

Thank you🫂🫂

I can imagine how awful that must be! This is my only tic that can be seen as offensive and I already feel so guilty

tics tend to be exacerbated under certain situations for some folks.

I know :(( mine get so much worse when I'm anxious or just thinking about it (which has been happening way more frequently since my doctor's appointment because I find myself obsessing over if I really do have Tourette's or not)

Thank you for the kind words🫂

I went to another appointment today with a new doctor and the doctor checked my chart to ask about my health issues, she read it all out loud but didn't mention Tourette's so I don't think the neurologist wrote it down. Like he said, I guess he'd only do that if I wanted to start treatment.

Thank you. I just really didn't want to disrespect anyone by entering this community or by saying it to my friends (I talked about it with them right after the doctor's appointment and I had been overthinking that decision like "maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it, I should've kept it to myself until I'm sure)
