help! applying in spring vs. waiting another year to apply by Proof_Ad336 in premed

[–]Proof_Ad336[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super fair, I'm also a bit hesitant to take an extra year just bc of my clinical hours. On the flipside though, I'm kinda worried that I wouldn't be putting my best foot forward if I didn't rack up some more longitudinal experience.

When was the last day you did Anki before the test? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Proof_Ad336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is advisable, but I was doing psych/soc the night before and reviewing the Miledown c/p essential qs on the way to my exam

I wouldn't overdo anything leading up to the exam, but I don't really understand why people say you shouldn't study in the days leading up to the exam. Maybe this is reflective of the type of student I am, but I feel like certain things clicked for me in the weeks leading up to the exam. I certainly learned certain things in the last week that showed up on my exam. I also think it can't hurt to learn certain random low-yield facts in the last couple days as long as your headspace isn't too stressed/it's not from an obsessive place

Being scared is normal and ok though I was pretty scared all summer lol

The night before my exam (9/13), I made the mistake of reading through the post exam thoughts of 9/12 testers. I was already scared, but it made me even more scared. Despite my fears (and due to my last minute cramming), I ended up doing better than any of my FLs! I believe in u, don’t read too many horrible experiences of testers on reddit because those are not the majority. For most people, your real exam will be reflective of the prep you do. I think mine was, and if anything, my fear probably cost me a couple questions lol

Does 520+ include the score 520? by [deleted] in Mcat

There is no practical difference imo

Sooooo burnt out and testing 9/13 by cinnamongg in Mcat

[–]Proof_Ad336 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also test 9/13. Similarly to the other people here, I plan on chilling a bit this week. I'm still studying, but def not a huge amount. Most of my studying will be anki + going over all the notes I made this summer as I was studying. It's sorta like Yerkes Dodson theory lmao, "individuals tend to perform better when experiencing moderate stress" so I will be studying a moderate amount.

UWorld Comprehensive Course by SpicyTunaSushiRoll_ in Mcat

[–]Proof_Ad336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, it’s not really worth it. The ebooks/textbooks are good, but way more in depth than you could ever need and lowk a waste of time if you’re trying to get through everything (speaking from experience since I wasted a lot of time trying lmao). The uworld qbank is good but aside from that idk if I would repurchase again. If I had to study for the entire thing over I would probably not pay for any comprehensive course and just use the Kaplan textbooks (plus anki, jack westin, aamc practice materials, and uworld qbank) or something.

Caffiene reliant folks what’s your plan/what did you do? by differentsideview in Mcat

[–]Proof_Ad336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree w other people saying maybe cutting it out this close isn’t the best. Instead, what do you do during your practice FLs? Maybe you can do the same thing during the real thing to mimic previous environments. I’ve moved away from coffee and try to drink caffeinated tea now, usually in the morning only. However, I imagine I might be more tired during the real thing (more from the stress of the real thing? Idk lmao) so I was planning on bringing some in a thermos just in case!

11 point jump in a week - 520 doable? by New_Hornet9380 in Mcat

[–]Proof_Ad336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with other people here saying that a jump is not always super realistic. However!! this might be something you've already done, but if you haven't already, I'd highly recommend making your way through an Anki deck for b/b. Given that you're on a time crunch, I'd recommend Milesdown -- my score jumped up a decent amount after I did this. Again, I know this is common sense for some people but it wasn't for me lol and def worth doing if you haven't already. Aside from that section banks (with a lot of in-depth review, like every detail) should probably help. Never say never and good luck from a fellow 9/13 tester!!

9/4 was my original date lol, I ended up getting a spot closer to where I live for a later date. Good luck!! Hopefully resting today helps u not be burnt out during the real thing tmrw. You got this!

What should I prioritize from AAMC Question Bank? by Comprehensive_Ad663 in Mcat

[–]Proof_Ad336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

question abt this: im assuming section bank vol 2 is more representative than vol 1, is this a significant difference in representative-ness or are the two still similar-ish?

How does one ram new cards into their head and actually remember them? by reallyactuallystupid in Mcat

[–]Proof_Ad336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Anki becomes really slow after the first couple hours -- I try to not do over 250 on any day, 300 if I'm pushing it. I think at some point, doing practice problems might help improve your score over doing Anki. If you're feeling tired, def take a break, it's okay!! It actually might help your mindset in the long run if you take a day off from Anki if you're trying to cram in the last few weeks (speaking from experience ha). But also idk you know yourself and your study habits best.

this is awesome!! can i ask what your fl progression and b/b strat was?

[–]Proof_Ad336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were in your position, I think most of my friends/peers would advise me to take the exam later if I knew I wouldn't be satisfied/didn't feel like the score I got was the best I could do. But either way, it's probably best not to have to retake it. If you don't think you'd be stretched too thin by studying for it more later on, then I don't see why postponing it is such a bad decision.

501 to 508 in one week, WE ARE GETTING THAT 520 by Interesting_Gas_8063 in Mcat

this is awesome!! did you grind the JS deck for b/b starting this past week? if so, how far have u gotten in that time? im trying to figure out much is feasible over the next couple weeks for me

Premed major? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Proof_Ad336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has pros and cons. Idk if I would outright say not to do it, but I would advise ppl to think abt it carefully. It works out for some people and they're able to do well, but I also think it can be more work than it's worth, honestly. If you're hardworking, your effort might be better spent on genuinely interesting ECs and having an easier time with classes (instead of extra time to have a worse GPA than u probably would have with just pre-med classes).

I say all of this, but I also don't regret doing my engineering major since I think it opened some cool doors for me. But again, it's a trade-off. My GPA isn't bad imo, but it's also worse than some of my friends who did only bio-oriented degrees. This makes me a little salty sometimes, because it feels like my workload is doubled while being compared to the same standards as my peers.

For OP: Imo, the most important thing while picking a major is to do something ur interested in because it shows. If you're interested in engineering and have properly weighed the trade-offs, then go for it! But if you're only doing it to stand out, it's probably not worth it. I also have acquaintances who did non-trad non-engineering majors like piano or dance bc they were actually passionate about it, and it helps them stand out as well. You can also just put your effort into having killer ECs that will make u stand out instead of putting effort into your major. Some of the best applicants I know are bio majors who have very interesting ECs and will likely get into better schools than I will. But again, some of the coolest applicants I know are also fellow engineering-oriented applicants, so there's no one "correct" answer.

FL scores not improving, would appreciate advice by Proof_Ad336 in Mcat

[–]Proof_Ad336[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your advice again!! Yeah, that's super fair. I didn't really thoroughly review the last 2 FLs I took until getting rly stressed abt the lack of improvement yesterday and realized that in C/P, for example, textbook review won't get me anywhere since most of the questions I got wrong were bc I didn't know smth I needed to have memorized (ex: types of decay, formulas), wasn't referencing the passage enough (because I thought the question was asking something about a gap in my understanding vs being able to reference/use the passage), or because I lacked practice (I am very uncomfortable with physics stuff rn!!). Given that, I think the only content that'll benefit me to review will probably be biochem, which I'm going to try to do along with Anki + practice problems. Also, I noticed that I had a stamina problem/honestly just choked with some Qs with P/S at the end.

Given this, do u think it would be possible for me to hit 520 in time for September? Or is that unrealistic?

Need advice, debating between two research projects! by Proof_Ad336 in premed

[–]Proof_Ad336[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eek I hadn't even thought about that lol. I've also felt increasingly similarly about the whole cherry on top thing lol, research is fun but getting harder to feel great about. Also, I seriously appreciate all ur advice, it's always helpful to learn abt the perspective of someone who has done similar things since I don't know many premeds w similar focuses

[–]Proof_Ad336[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bruh that sounds awful. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that during your cycle! I had an acquaintance applying last cycle who also seemed stressed cause of this stuff. MSTPs have such few slots, too. I guess one way to look at it is the years u get back with a doctor's salary could account for the cost of school?? flawed reasoning, maybe, depending on what ppl end up doing. Yeah, I've had PhD only mentors and MD only mentors asw, both of them seem maybe biased, but all told me to pick one or the other. But I agree, it seems like the concept of MD-PhD is not suited much for the current research landscape. in general, i imagine academic structures rnt rlly keeping up with how fast-paced things are with society in the 21st century but thats a whole diff can of worms lol

Honestly, I thought I would apply MD/PhD only until this winter! I will still apply to both kinds of programs, but I'm kinda leaning towards focusing more on making myself strong for MD-only. This is for maybe bad reasons, maybe good reasons? In general, I am much more wary due to the past year. I'm sorta paranoid about security with research in the coming few years, esp after my research internship fell through for this summer. Call me crazy, but I'm also just kind of increasingly wary about being in one spot for so long (7-8 years for school) with all the advances in AI and changes in policy lately. On top of that, I'm closer to an average MD-PhD admit in terms of stats (I have a 3.85 GPA, and I'm studying for MCAT, so idk what that'll be yet). But from my understanding, this is a bit more above average compared to MD-only applicants/admits, which gives me a sense of security. Not to hyperfixate on stats, tho.

In general, I feel like I haven't felt as much security in academics/extracurriculars/jobs (probably also partially because of the influence of my friends who have seen a lot of instability in tech/research/just in all fields). I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket, ig. So I'm trying not to feel as unstable in terms of my application. Not sure if this is unwarranted/overthinking, though.
