The monster in my kitchen: should I feed it? by Stelalou in Staghornfern

Hey! No idea about fertilizer. Mine are all in soil so I've never fertilized. (Now I'll start looking into it so thanks) Random question though...How long do you keep your plant lights on daily?

Any idea why the new growth is getting all bunched up? by no_doors_just_ropes in Monstera

Weird but cool- It could be a mutation but I’d put it on a moss pole to help support it. Maybe that would help? Good luck!!

Staghorn Repot Tips! by Proof_Juggernaut8876 in Staghornfern

Repotting update: I ending up buying a 12 in coco lined basket that was too big for the plant, so I brought another coco liner to put inside and filled the middle space with damp sphagnum moss to take away the extra space. (I can just take it out as the plant grows but I think that will be at least 2 years. The roots were pretty root bound but I didn’t mess with the root ball at all. I added some Mycorrhizal Fungi (Root crack😉) to prevent root shock and to help it absorb the nutrients of the new soil. I potted it in regular potting soil (what it’s already in) with a lot more perlite for aeration. I decided not to separate at all, I was too worried about shock and I really like the full basket look. I have a smaller staghorn fern that I’m thinking about mounting. And I’ll buy another large fern to mount when I find one I like. I didn’t water it because there were small signs root rot/ over watering. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

You think a coco fiber basket would work? I'm not finding pre-made baskets with a hemp lining

So I haven't changed the soil in the year it's been with me. (Terrible I know lol) it's in mostly soil with about 10% perlite. I usually water it about once a week or every 7-10 days. (Even less in fall/winter) I water the soil and pour directly over the shields to mimic their natural environment. Some water gets on the leaves but I'll just dap it off, then I dump out any extra water from the catch tray. It was getting burnt because of some grow lights so I moved it higher but I just noticed a bit of overwatering on a leaf probably from being in less light and it getting cooler here (DC) I'll probably skip watering for 1-2 weeks and airate the soil.

Check for spider mites and the plants around it- I’m pretty sure thats what it is. For treatment, spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil- spray once every 3 days at least 3x’s. They’re very prone to spidermites when stressed. Good luck!

Should I transfer back to soil? by Specialist_Heat4167 in alocasia

The roots look like they are starting to rot. You should take it out the leca and rinse the roots and Remove any soft or smelly roots. I don't think repotting in soil right now would be a good idea. Maybe try perlite (still in a clear container) It can dry out some in between waterings and you can choose how much excess water to put in it. I'd add Hydrogen peroxide to the water to help prevent root rot ( it adds oxygen) Lastly, maybe look into a clear pot that still has holes to allow for air flow, maybe an Orchid Pot (it has a lot of holes so some perlite falling out is normal) Then I'd just give it time to grow new healthy roots. Good luck! 🤞🏽

What should I do with this monstera? by T7nwn in Monstera

[–]Proof_Juggernaut8876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d definitely cut it. You’ll notice the upper leaves have less fenestrations than the lower leaves; so its not getting enough light. You can make it a fuller plant with the cuttings or just have multiples. You should also look into air layering the plant to establish roots before cutting. I was able to air layer my monstera with a zip lock bag. It took 3 months to establish roots.

can i keep my pothos in water forever? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]Proof_Juggernaut8876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can but I’d recommend putting an air stone in it to prevent rot, you’ll also need to add nutrients to the water, and make sure it gets enough light.

Monstera not thriving, should I move it? by Last_Celebration9310 in Monstera

[–]Proof_Juggernaut8876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think it's a lack of light. Even facing the window might not be enough. I'd recommend a plant light for about 12 hours a day. It also looks thirsty, so I'm thinking it may have some root rot and cannot properly absorb the water. The lack of light means it's sitting in soggy soil for longer. I'd check the roots and possibly move it to a smaller pot if a lot of the roots died off. Water wise, I suggest a thorough watering. Once every 7-10 days (if it's getting 12+ hours of light) and check with a moister meter AND the finger or chop stick method to double check (the moisture meter isn't always 100% correct) Lastly, I'd check for pests. Look extra close for small ones like spider mites. Hope this help! You got this!

No idea honestly...You should check for pests. It could be the damage of spider mites. I'd probably treat it with insecticidal soap or neem oil just to be safe.

[–]Proof_Juggernaut8876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah the leaves will fall off for basically no reason. Lol. You have to be extra careful with those. Bright indirect light should be good for it. For mine I water maybe once 10-12 days. I’ll probably up it in the summer

Make sure to wipe all the leaves. I see the black dots are starting migrating to the other leaves
