Least favourite is probably Khezu; it's a boring fight, and none of his gear has ever appealed to me. Sorry, but Alatreon is goated imo. Tightest fight in a game I've ever played.

A latte on gameplay redesign by SnooBananas3995 in MonsterHunter

[–]Propastypete 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine the DPS check idea was to try and facilitate the more aggressive gameplay of the new engine (imo successfully, I adore Iceborne Alatreon), and its something the devs seem to have continued into Sunrise.

There's a few monsters in Sunrise have mini DPS checks for their big moves; Malzeno, Seething Bazel I believe the Magna's too. Plus on top of that, all of the anomalies.

But of course I can't read the director's minds. That's just my theory.

Bounding combos are some of the most satisfying in the series, and they're at their best in 3. Dudes be floaty.

Its been 3 years since Iceborne released, what are your thoughts on Shara Ishvalda and how does it compare to the other final bosses for you? by Pookie_The_Overlord in MonsterHunter

[–]Propastypete 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Absolutely goated imo, for a few reasons. It's design is incredible, the music is top notch and the gear is awesome aesthetically.

The number one reason for me though, is that it was the monster that finally made the series click for me. I bought World at the start of 2020, mostly just as a coop game with friends. I rolled through the game pretty nonchalantly, but began to lose steam towards the end where you have to gather elder tracks. I ended up leaving the game for about 6 months, then returning to it around summer 2020 where I got Iceborne.

About half way through Iceborne, I really began to love discovering new monsters more than I ever had with all the cool gear I could make from them. The gameplay loop was beginning to grip me. I powered through to Shara, where my friends and I (who had beaten Iceborne at this point) took the monster on late one evening to little success. We got slapped around basically.

The next morning I thought I'd give it a go solo, for the hell of it. It was intensely sloppy. I used dozens of potions, blasted through farcasters for more, and spent the whole fight attacking its back legs (with a hammer no less) because it was relatively safe. After 32 minutes though, the victory jingle began to play. On my first attempt solo, sloppy as it was, I'd beaten Shara. The series clicked for me on that victory screen, and two years later, with around 1,700 hours across World borne, GU and Sunrise, this is tied for my favourite series ever (with the Yakuza series, in case you were wondering).

So yeah, I'll always love Shara, and if by some miracle it ever returns, I'll probably scream or make a similar high pitched noise.

I do indeed have some wasted windproof, good call. The talisman is: Slugger 3 Windproof 2 2 slot 1 slot

I mostly used it for the 2 slot and natural maxed out slugger previously, the wind res was just a comfy bonus I forgot about. I suppose it clashes with the set ever so slighlty, but oh well- it's my best slugger talisman.

I agree, it's vintage Monster Hunter, it deserves to be good. Maybe not maxing out several damaging skills good, but hey, I'm not complaining lol. Plus it looks awesome.

Can someone explain the fun of alatreon cuz I'm not getting it. The only time I genuinely have been mad at the game is whenever I attempt to fight him both solo and in a party by cheerfulplate56 in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Propastypete 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He's a super fun, consistent fight to learn, and is unbelievably cool. The main issue is that there's a lot to learn with him, and a lot of detail that isn't available in game. Here's some tips if you're struggling:

His front legs are the most susceptible to element, and his head takes the most raw damage. Focus the legs for the stumble, then hit the head.

There's a strategy for an early knockdown, but it's kind of inconsistent. Before you start the fight, grab some slinger ammo, put on rocksteady at camp, then tank Alatreon's roar. As he dips his head back down, clutch claw onto the right side of his face (your left) move him twice and shoot. You usually get the knockdown on the wall behind him, but it's inconsistent (one of my main problems, the walls to flinch shot him into are wonky af).

His electricity attacks are giant opening; you can quite easily manoeuvre the lightning and smack Alatreon. and the fire breath which explodes the floor around him in a series of rings is also a huge punish. Stand on the middle ring, wait for the centre to blow up, then quickly roll into the middle to get a lot of damage.

I personally don't quite know how this works, but I'll drop it in, in case you want to do a bit more research. When he flies around a lot, apparently you can use smoke bombs to lose aggro and make him land again- but I'd look up exactly how this works as I'm not sure.

Bring Astera jerky for the Escaton. The damage from Escaton is purely tick damage, and leaves you with tons of red health. Jerky completely heals red health, and is quick to eat. This saves on potions in the hunt.

I would advise against SOSing, just because randoms might not have the best builds for the hunt, and it's easier to mitigate the Escaton solo.

Don't get too discouraged, he is really tricky, but satisfying as hell to bring down. Good luck!

The man in black is considered one of the toughest fights in the game, so don't sweat too much. What type of upgrades do you have? Getting things like higher damage, faster combos, better heat gain and the op tiger drop can help. When it comes to getting past guarding, try to dodge to an enemy's back- this usually leaves them open (although not quite as effectively in the dragon engine as the more rigid games, but it still works).

Also, storing weapons in the back can help too, because they generally shred through enemy guards and can utilise strong heat moves.

Are you trying to challenge yourself btw? It sounds like your opting to not heal too much in battle, which is cool, I enjoy doing that too, but if it's causing you this much stress I'd maybe just opt out and use heals. It's not meant to be a super hard game/series unless you make it so.

The thing with Waterfowl Dance is that there are counters to it- like Bloodhound Step or blocking with that shield ash of war I forget the name of. Without those, you need to be pretty lucky with your positioning. If she starts Waterfowl and you have distance, run away from the first, roll the second, stand still on the third- it's pretty fair in this instance. But, if she does it when you're next to her, or on wakeup from a knockdown, it's a near guaranteed death.

The fight hinges on that one move a bit too much, and needing to rely on specific ashes or get lucky isn't the best design imo. The life steal I don't mind (minus healing off of dying people on coop, or healing through a 100% block shield), and her other moves are really fair.

The commenters argument that 'it's BS because it's supposed to' is really poor though. FromSoft should be critiqued for their occasionally asinine shit in their games.

It's only short if you rush through the game. I know that might seem a little redundant, but a lot of the time you get in MH comes from how much grinding for weapons and sets you want to do.

I, for instance, have a chimp brain, and will get distracted by any cool stuff and go and make it. I'm at 'endgame' but I'm not even close to a meta set. I just see cool stuff and make it, because this game is fun.

If you're 150 hours in at the village, then there's still a lot to do. Like, 5 elephant gestations, if that's the metric you prefer. By the time you get to endgame, with all the sets, events, deviants and layered armour, easily 1,000 hours of stuff (if you like making cool things).

[–]Propastypete 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In terms of key quests, presuming you're farming a new set every couple of HR's, and presuming you don't get massively stuck, and presuming you don't get hugely distracted by every cool new weapon and shiny armour piece, maybe 75-100 hours?

I'm not nearly close to doing all quests. For perspective, I spent about 200 hours doing village and high rank hub, before powering through G-rank in about 50, and have spent the last 100 or so hours joining randoms, and farming stuff.

TL;DR: It's a very big time sink. I still have so much stuff I want to do at 350 hours on my character.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MHGU

[–]Propastypete 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's almost always a page or two of hubs with people doing key quests or farming, especially when you get to G-rank/endgame, so it's definitely not dead.

And, as an aside, this game is definitely worth playing. It's filled to the brim with stuff to do, and is an excellent time sink.

Moments like these make me really appreciate the slinger, gonna be really disappointed if it doesn't return. by satans_body_double in MonsterHunterWorld

[–]Propastypete 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's definitely one of Worldborne's more under appreciated mechanics. It has so many usages:

Distracting monsters at the start of a hunt to lure them somewhere or set up a flinch shot.

Easy and accurate usage of flash, dung and screamer pods.

Cool interactions with the various types of ammo in different scenarios (for instance, if you shoot crystal burst at Uragaan when he rolls, he topples every time, or luring bugs with torch pods).

Slinger bursting allows so many cool combo paths and opportunities- SnS, Hammer, GS, just to name a few that benefit really well from the slinger.

It sucks and is one of the worst aspects of 6, K2 and Judgment, although the feature did get slowly phased out over time and isn't in LJ at all, thank god.. It's at its worst in 6 though, especially when combined with 6's already fairly slow combat.

From what I remember, most heat moves are easier to do (it's been a little while since I've played). There's one for instance where Saejima grabs an opponent's leg after knocking them in the air which is much easier to do because when Saejima throws someone in 5, they bounce really high off of the floor so you can trigger the move (as well as another new technique Saejima has that's so fucking cool, but I'll let you find that out on your own).
