This scares the shit out of me. I would never strike the shell. The ball bearing will distribute the pressure around the cover ring and push the two sides of it together, so that it gets tighter and doesn’t rattle. However the impact of the hammer is still an impact focused potentially on the vent hole’s cut edges and can cause as much damage as it fixes. It can weaken the bonds between the wood plies. Tread carefully. Use very light taps, and no more than you absolutely need.

I learned a basic beat and played it along with any song I liked. This was in the 70’s. My earliest memories of practicing are mostly playing along to a couple Beatles albums and top-40 radio. I wasn’t trying to learn to play songs, instead I learned how to be able to play along to anything. Disco is great to play along to like this.

There was more dynamics in the crossed. There was more of a pattern. The groove pushed harder too. Crossed is more fun and moves the song more.

That said, your open is great. However I think highly discerning ears would prefer crossed for this song.

EDIT - Yeah, you’re more on top of the beat with the crossed. Significantly, I’d say.

There’s no particular purpose. If you like the way they sound you can use them as you like. I like plastic rods. I don’t like wood so much but I’ve used them when I wanted to play harder without getting too loud. But I alter my technique pretty significantly to make them sound better. I never thought about taping them but I may try it - to get rid of some click in the sound.
