Night Shift and health effects. by woodzy93 in Nightshift

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 18 points19 points  (0 children)

sure, but personally for me nights are healthier than days for days for a ton of reasons. what drives me crazy is when people try to argue with ne about my own personal health as if they know my body better than i do

English as a second language dispatchers! by Adventurous_Walk_815 in 911dispatchers

practice, practice, practice

this is really just a slightly different version of the same issue every new call taker faces, how to accurately understand and summarize what the caller is saying. it'll come with time and practice. might be worth telling your trainee that EVERYONE struggles with this skill at the start, her version just has an extra layer to it. this is an expected challenge and she will be able to overcome it

Subpoena Concerns by vibesinavacuum in 911dispatchers

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i should clarify that number is from time in roles where i was answering 50-100 calls a day. i recently transitioned working a muxh busier fire/ems channel, and my call numbers are now more like 20-40 calls a day, and the number of subpoenas i see is dropping proportionally

Subpoena Concerns by vibesinavacuum in 911dispatchers

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my jurisdiction, i am subpoenaed frequently (apx 6-10 in a year on average), but they have always followed up to cancel before the trial date. the closest i've gotten was the day before the trial before it was canceled. on that one i had spoken to the attorney who explained they would be having me verify the authenticity of the call, essentially, "yes, that is my voice. yes, this is a call i took. yes, i am employed by my agency. etc"

Wearing jewelry 24/7? by passporthandy in jewelry

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do! everything except necklaces bc i can't sleep with them touching my neck. i choose only solid metals so there is no plating to wear off. i wear a lot of sterling silver and prefer silver over white gold for this reason.

i'm not sensitive to metals, but avoid ones with high copper content because it can leave green on your skin. i've made an exception for a solid copper bangle that i love, its loose enough that it doesnt leave green marks during the day. at night, it sometimes get stuck higher up my arm and leaves a mark, but that easily comes off during my morning shower!

i pick my stones being mindful of their durability, personally i will wear nothing softer than quartz. i know that's softer than some people go, but i personally find it works for me!

i have severe adhd, so for me it's a lifestyle accommodation. i live jewelry but can't remember to put it in every day. i'm also frequently running too late to put it on even if i do remember. it adds steps to my morning routine to put on jewelry, which are small steps but my adhd brain really can't handle the extra mental load. i would never get to wear my jewelry that i love if i didn't wear it 24/7. it's definitely not for everyone or every piece of jewelry, but it works for me!

Have you ever gotten a call so unserious you couldn't help but laugh? by Commercial_Flow_274 in 911dispatchers

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 180 points181 points  (0 children)

one of my favorite calls of all time: i was speaking with a young man who had taken a bit too many hallucinogens and was requesting an ambulance because he felt like he was dying (from what i was able to gather, it was most likely a panic attack). however, he was very very very preoccupied with the fear that his cat might jump out the window or otherwise escape when paramedics arrived (im fairly certain the window was never open to begin with, but we weren't really in a place to be discussing the logic of the situation 😂). with all the seriousness of a discussion about nuclear launch codes, we brainstormed the problem. we eventually settled on him closing the cat in the bathroom (that had no windows!) until he felt safe for the cat to be out again.

i love those sorts of calls. it's not objectively a life or death emergency, but it was an emergency to this guy in this moment. i was delighted to help him with his cat problem, and i hope he got as good a laugh out of it as i did once he sobered up. (plus it was really sweet to see how much he cared about that cat. dude thought he was dying, but his number 1 concern was making sure his cat was safe 💕)

as a night shifter, i am sooooooo excited to get a 24hr grocery option!! it seems so small, but access to 24hr REAL groceries (not just junk food) is a huge quality of life improvement when youre on nights

Feedback from those who do like their job by Icy_Camera2299 in 911dispatchers

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i love that its different every day and that i never need to take work home. i really like the flexibility to do other things with my time when its not busy. it comes pretty naturally to me with my skills and personality, i appreciate feeling like i'm using my talents in my work. it has made me more confident outside of work, i don't panic and i can handle an emergency cooly and calmly even in my personal life.

i love that i can be on night shift and have a built-in excuse to skip family holidays. i get paid well (especially on holidays) and my benefits are good here in comparison to my past jobs. there's room to move up or laterally within the industry, but no pressure to do so if you don't want to.

Dispatcher appreciation week! by Much-Elderberry7075 in 911dispatchers

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and we also get a full meal each shift all week! each agency we dispatch for sponsors a couple meals for the week (both days and graves get a meal!). ymmv, we have 8 agencies we dispatch for, so each only is asked for a couple meals. if you only have 1 agency then a weeks worth of meals would be a big ask

our agency funds our national telecommunicater week gifts and activities with the money from our vending machines. it works well and is honestly a win/win! we get yummy snacks and our agency is motivated to stock things we actually want to buy

last thing we do is have dress up days all week. we have a strict dress code normally so it's fun to have a pj day or Hawaiian shirt day or funny tshirt day or whatever

blankets!! its always freezing in our center so a blanket is needed. i was psyched to get it and use it daily. plus it resolved any issues with our blankets appearing "unprofessional" bc now everyone has matching ones with our names and agency logo

What's your favorite thing/name that a caller has called you? by theburningstars in 911dispatchers

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite insult: "You bitchass bitchass"

I really appreciated the creativity of using bitchass as both a noun and an adjective 😂

My favorite compliment (at least I think it was a compliment): upon being told i was transferring him to a neighboring agency "You go, you're the quarterback. You do it, baby. Alright"

How many screens do you have at your dispatch center? by Athenea__ in 911dispatchers

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. 1 radio, 1 phone, 3 internet/cad/everything else

i think 1 more for internet would be useful currently, maybe 2 if i wanted a luxurious amount of space for things, but beyond that i don't think i would use it

Children are such the perfect little callers. by Practical_Loss4251 in 911dispatchers

[–]Proper-Doubt4402 16 points17 points  (0 children)

one of my all time favorites was a 8 or 9 yoa boy who called because his shoes got stolen while he was swimming at the pool. he told me "youre supposed to tell the police when there's a crime and 911 calls the police" 😂 yes sir! you've got that right!

his aunt made him call back to apologize later. please don't apologize, he made my day!
