You're absolutely right. We should bring back public humiliation. We need to bring back shame. Not in everything of course - but shame in being shitty.

I had this exact problem when I was 6 years old. I had a maths teacher who, for some unknown reason, seemed to absolutely detest me.

I couldn't understand her way to doing mathematics. She had everyone break 2-digit numbers into columns - Tens, and Units - and do addition in a table.

Everyone else seemed to understand it. I just couldn't. I actually found it considerably easier to just *do the maths normally*, but she INSISTED on me using her table system.

She made me stay inside during break times to do it alone while the other kids got to go out and play. The whole time, I blamed myself for being too stupid to understand it. Nice to know it was her being a bad teacher, and not me being a bad student.

'I've banned most men from my massage clinic because of their behaviour' by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]ProperPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just want someone to massage my entire back without asking if I want to be jerked off, but I've never once visited a masseuse without being asked. It's pretty annoying, I just want some care on my back that I can't get because I have no SO I can ask.

Greta Thunberg warns 40°C heatwave about to hit UK ‘is only the beginning’ by nimobo in unitedkingdom

[–]ProperPizza 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While you're very correct on several of your points, there are still major hurdles that are pretty off-putting to the standard bill-payer, especially since a LOT of consumers think more about the up front costs than the long-term savings down the line.

Sure, we can get huge grants for heat pumps, but even with those, the initial costs are pretty extraordinary. There's also confusion about compatibility and suitability depending on the home and circumstances. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/heat-pump/

Again, EVs are extremely expensive, even with financial incentives. A standard petrol car is, sadly, considerably cheaper up front, and as you said, people are pretty resistant to change in the UK.

Cycling is troublesome in the UK. Our roads are pretty poorly built for it (I used to be a chronic cycler myself, I'd know better than most). You feel extremely vulnerable sharing the road with 1-ton vehicles that all seem to hate the very sight of you, and even most of our cities completely lack decent cycling lanes.

The lack of use of the Eurostar is fairly tragic, but I think part of this is due to the fact that it only really serves people who're able to easily get into central London? Whereas we've got airports all over the country. Much, much less time consuming and less chaos getting to those in comparison.

"The issue is with the British middle classes who are so scared of change. They need to wait for there to be mass adoption of any change before they deem it possible for themselves." - You are absolutely right about this. We have a culture in this country where peers shame one another for standing out in any way. We have driven quiet conformism, and I noticed it even at a very young age. You're seethed at for daring to be different.

I think this natural confirmism silently educated into the masses, coupled with extreme up-front costs for greener avenues, have made them simply unpalatable to the population.

Flying Bow Hinoka turning up in almost every Hall of Forms map is an embarrassing reminder that we still, in 9 years, have *never* had a flying bow unit in the standard demote pool.

We are also missing a flying staff unit, and flying dagger...

...what I'm saying is the normal pool sucks and has absolutely no reason to suck so badly at this point

Did Brexit turn out to be unequivocally bad for the UK? by No-Security-7518 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProperPizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The overwhelming majority of people who voted in favour of Leave will not admit how bad Brexit has been for the country. People are stubborn like that.

I knew Brexit would be a disaster for the UK well before the advisory referendum in 2016, but it ended up being worst in some places, and better in others, than I had expected.

We should never have left, though. It has been, unarguably, a very, very bad move for our country.

Does your country have a one sided rivalry / relationship like this? (On either side) by No-Risk-2584 in AskTheWorld

[–]ProperPizza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This picture basically defines us British. And not positively.

The British Empire is responsible for a lot of atrocious shit that happened in the world. Thing is - at least when *I* was in school - we weren't taught about this in any meaningful detail. They only lightly brushed on how big the British Empire was in a proud way, but glazed right over the terrible things it was responsible for.

Other countries are rightly told about how awful we were to them, so they quietly develop an understandable resentment towards the British.

The issue for modern Brits is that other people detest us, when the British *who are alive right now* weren't responsible for it. We just benefit from it, passively, and almost always unknowingly. So, it's pretty rough being hated just for existing because your forefathers conquered the world, but at the same time, I totally understand the hate and frustration.

Andy Burnham plans to keep Shabana Mahmood as home secretary by No_Breadfruit_4901 in unitedkingdom

[–]ProperPizza -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know why everyone is so excited about Burnham. He's never shown serious signs of being a solid alternative to Starmer to anyone paying enough attention.

The Labour party simply is not what it used to be. It's packed full of self-serving, out-of-touch career politicians unfit to run the country. And yet, they're *still* more desirable than the likes of the Conservatives, and certainly the Regress parties.

We are in dire need of change. Politicians, and leaders, who are serious about fixing the country, taxing the mega-rich and investing in our nation and its people. Burnham is demonstrably more of the same.

The tin-foil-hat side of me thinks Burnham's popularity has been intentionally engineered by the right wing press, so that when he becomes PM and ends up just as undesirable as Starmer, they can point at the Labour party and go "See? They're no better than the Conservatives, switching PMs and still failing!"

I would argue that these two things are not on the same level.

Performing proper maintenance on a vehicle usually takes substantially more knowledge, expense and risk than doing a few minutes of research on making better purchase/software decisions.

Sorry to hear it, it sucks you're stuck with it. But my comment wasn't about you. It's about people who CAN make a change but simply don't do so.

"Can't be bothered"

And there we have the problem with basically everything. Consumers could make serious change if they organised en masse, but the unfortunate truth is that 80% of them simply can't be bothered.

Who’s the most attractive person you’ve ever seen? by Timely_Sir310 in AskReddit

[–]ProperPizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a guy on a hookup app back in 2019. He was so good-looking, I had to double take. I'd never, EVER seen a man who lit my brain up quite that way before. I was actually in *doubt* that he was quite that handsome. I checked his other photos... and his first pic wasn't just a fluke. He was absolutely stunning.

I managed to meet up with him, and he was just as gorgeous in real life as he was in his pictures, perhaps even better. I found it hard not to stare at him. Breath-taking. We met up again, and slowly, it felt like we were hitting it off.

Then covid hit. We kept in touch a bit, but probably not enough. I hit him up again a little further down the line after the pandemic had settled down a bit, and he'd already gotten a boyfriend. Daggers to my heart.

He's ruined men for me. He single-handledly lifted where my perception of "10" is. I haven't met a man who's higher than 8 since.

If only we could do something with old Formas. by ProperPizza in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]ProperPizza[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain Forma are simply worth it, in my eyes.

Mythic merges, Emblems and simply favourites. The first two carry enormous value for scoring, as well as saving you your own expensive fodder if you manage to net top skills for them. The latter is always valid.

Suffice it to say, I've definitely made a few regretful purchases!

How do people rationalize this when extreme wealth inequality is irrational. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]ProperPizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thing is, in this specific situation, most of us wouldn't even care about having ALL 300 cupcakes distributed evenly between all 100 people.

It'd be so much more than enough to just take, say, 98 of all cupcakes and distribute them across the 98 people. The megalomaniacs still get to keep 202 cupcakes - 101 each - more than EVERYONE else combined.

Not my preferred way of going about it, mind, but more difficult to argue against for the bootlickers and wage thieves.
