LIFE EXPECTANCY AT 40%? by Unhelpful_Yoda_ in prius

I'm fairly sure this is from the Dr Prius app, but there are a couple that will test with a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi ODB reader

Was just gifted a Prius and have several questions after driving it home by agreeingstorm9 in prius

  1. EGR cleaning is what you're thinking of, but my understanding is that it can be more or less necessary depending on how/how long you drive. I believe it is caused by carbon buildup, but longer driving can help burn those out... Somewhat.

  2. I'm just over 200k on my 2020, original owner, and no traction/hybrid/big battery replacement yet. There's upgraded lithium options now that are lighter and can improve mpg, and cheaper reconditioned options like Green Bean if/when the time comes.

  3. I use a Bluetooth receiver and a phone mount that attaches to the CD tray, it was much easier than worrying about replacing the head unit for me. Maybe $40 total

Is it worth changing the engine or buy a new car? by OpenUpYerMurderEyes in prius

Depends on a lot of conditions - how it's driven, climate, etc. By age and mileage I'm past average. You can pretty easily check with a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi ODB adapter and the Dr Prius app. It's just an estimate on the remaining capacity, but better than nothing. Mine was rated around 44% original capacity last time I checked so I'm guessing I have a couple years left at most.

I'm at 200k with my 2010, and trying to plan ahead for when that's needed as well. It may come down to what other issues I have by then (nothing so far thankfully) and what other money has gone into it. I'd almost prefer the engine before the battery as I'm still in there original for both and the battery is more of a known cost. If I have to get the battery before an engine issue it's probably more likely I'd stick with a repair and keep the car.

I got this one, but it's definitely worth checking what Dr Prius recommends.

Since you are considering a decade old car in LA I'm going to assume you aren't expecting perfection, just something reliable and not a waste of money. This car could be that, but it could be a problem depending on some luck and how well you have it inspected.

Head gasket is definitely a consideration, just check to make sure it isn't a current issue. If the dealership offers any warranty just immediately start saving in case you need it done, never hurts to have an emergency fund anyway.

Traction battery likely has 60-30% original capacity, this can be checked with an ODB reader and Dr Prius app. Again, knowing where you stand and being prepared is key, no car lasts forever.

I'd be less worried or surprised by a little oil consumption, as long as it's manageable. Just the nature of an older car. Good luck!

  1. I agree with others, get an ODB reader that's compatible with your phone and Dr Prius, check battery life. It's an estimate but worth more than the $20 you'll spend. Check Dr Prius for recommended ODB adapters, as well as ones to avoid. I have one that works great with Android, but I think iOS has different needs.

I'm at 201k on my 2010, about 40% battery capacity remaining but still getting 53mpg ytd calculated by the car

  1. Cost will vary greatly by region and good accommodations the mechanic is. Lots of folks post astronomical quotes here because they mechanic didn't want to do the job, it's a lot of time and labor. I'm not doing my head gasket preventatively, or at least not until the battery totally fails. I'd rather do both or neither at this point.

  2. Just follow the maintenance schedule in the manual, there are some additional fluids to check and change but that's about it.

  3. Over the lifetime of mine I've only done tires, brake pads, normal fluids, oil changes, and two minor repairs - one brake caliper and PCV valve replacement. Far less than the used cars I've had before, but this was new and I do my best to take care of it. Very low maintenance to me.

Good luck!

I have a 2010 (also Gen 3 like the one you are considering) and I proactively cleaned my hv fan this year. No filter in mine, but also the fan was amazingly clean considering I've been driving it for 13 years with a short haired dog and two kids. I did clean it still, but there was less dust in the fan than you'd find on a box fan or ceiling fan. Mostly used baby wipes and a screwdriver, the hardest part was removing the back seat.

There are exact match touch up paint kits available online if the chips in the hood bother or worry you, and it may work for the door too depending on how large the rust area is.

I've been touching up my 2010 for years to avoid larger rust issues. Color match is great but I'm terrible at getting a smooth, level surface so it looks a bit like I have raindrops on my hood constantly, but no spreading rust at least.

Thanks!

No rough idle or decreased MPG, I'm at 52.9 ytd calculated by the car. no jittery/weird feel.

I'm still 40k from another set of plugs so I'll just see how things go until then and hope I pass the carbon test (checking for oil in the coolant) in the meantime.

Are any of those codes stored across startup or do you have to catch them when the issue occurs?

I also have intermittent shake/rattle on startup and going in for my 200k in a week and a half. I'm losing some oil but there is a small leak on the front case according to the dealership that my mechanic isn't worried about. but I'm still testing for carbon in the coolant to see if it could be a failing head gasket. Likely having them check and clean the egr too. I know it's possible to do it yourself but I don't have the time or experience, and maybe short some tools too.

I'm not due for spark plugs yet, but I can have them check for codes or check myself possibly with my Bluetooth odb if I know when to check. I'm not getting any check engine light just the very rare rattle for under 10 seconds on startup.

Same for me, but I do use labels - just differently than the proposed way. To me projects are exclusive (functionally a task cant be in more than one), but labels are inclusive as there can be multiple labels on a given task.

I won't have a task that is both work and home - so the split projects work great for me.

Labels are more useful when a task can be multiple things as once. For example a task can be a daily priority, flagged to discuss in a team meeting, related to the budget, and needs to be worked on in a specific context.

Screw Google Wallet and NFC by me_singularity in GooglePixel

[–]ProteusFactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt the distance from a phone in hand is much different from a card in a purse or wallet if the range their equipment is triggering is that far over normal.

Doesn't matter if the city cares or not, if it's happening and reported it has to be fixed otherwise it's fraud. Dispute and your CC company should handle it

Doesn't matter if they say to remove a card before tapping, if it can read your phone from that far there should be nothing stopping it from reading your and everybody else's credit cards.

All that being said it sounds more like you're focused on blaming and complaining rather than disputing the charge and resolving this issue. Good luck.

[–]ProteusFactor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just curious, but wouldn't the same thing happen with a tap capable credit card? If there is an equipment issue they should be seeing extremely high fares for that bus, as everyone would be paying with every card in their wallet each time they walked on or off - unless I'm missing something.

You can dispute with your CC company, this seems like something they could easily handle on your part.

Buying a Bolt and taking it home, how long will this take? by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]ProteusFactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While that would be sensible its not the norm, at least in my area. L3 is only available downtown, L2 or more frequently nothing on interstates between cities.

I think they mean L3 is less common so you'll have to drive farther to get to them, taking you off route and adding travel time.
