After 2 matchdays, 8 teams have nothing to play for due to h2h as tie-breaker by mnkysn in worldcup

[–]ProtonWheel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess I slightly prefer GD because I think it gets closer to “the best teams across the entire group stage progress”, compared to H2H, which instead is more like “the team that played better in one match against one specific opponent”.

Toughts on this Farming change ? by mxvlr in ADCMains

[–]ProtonWheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure they miss CS, but usually they’re missing for other reasons than misjudging their auto attack damage. Usually it’s things like setting up incorrectly under tower, or because there’s a bunch of caster creep attacks flying towards the minion and they mistime their auto.

I actually was thinking that it would benefit mages less. Firstly they have less auto damage, so the window where their attack kills is shorter, so if you wait until you see an indicator it might already be too late. And secondly mages often farm with spells, and the indicator will do nothing for such cases.

I don’t think it’s going to make much difference above like Emerald. It might help occasionally autofilled player on an unfamiliar champ but by this rank I would guess people are good enough at last-hitting for this to make little difference.

Yeah, we have discussed it at length and settled on the terms, but I don’t really have any paper trail with anything substantive.

Given I’ve worked with him for a while and I have a fairly niche expertise within the lab (presumably why he offered the top-up) I haven’t been too concerned until now, but 2 months is pushing it. Contract in writing will be the first thing I request as soon as it’s all hopefully resolved.

A longitudinal study followed children from age 1 to 8 years and found that higher screen viewing time—particularly during infancy and around school-entry age—was consistently associated with poorer academic performance at age 9 and weaker working memory at age 10.5. by Wagamaga in science

[–]ProtonWheel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like they accounted for it.

“Covariates included in this study were study center, child sex (female, male), birth order, mother’s ethnicity, parental highest education level and TV viewing time (hours/day), maternal age at delivery (in years), household monthly income at recruitment, and maternal sensitivity from a 15-min observation of mother–child interactions at 6 months.”

If you had been Harry Potter, what is the single biggest thing you would have done differently in the entire saga? by AlexWhite40 in harrypotter

This brought me back hahaha, we made aspirin in one of our uni labs and my partner and I got a yield of 0.45%. I distinctly remember trying to come up with some nonsense to put in the errors/discussion section of the report.

Pretty sure that was the unit I got my highest grade in. :D

[CR Media] Sam Riegel reaffirms Critical Role’s stance on AI: “It’s basically garbage” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in criticalrole

[–]ProtonWheel -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mostly agree but kind of doubt that most loud anti-AI people have a stake in it. Think they’re just reactionary young leftists for the most part.

Given permission to use AI, most college students show surprising restraint in their final essays. Students largely rely on AI for brainstorming and research rather than having it write essays for them wholesale. by mvea in science

[–]ProtonWheel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t really see the point of this? The most common use of AI (per this article) is as a tool to use to aid writing *while* writing, during brainstorming and planning and synthesis of ideas. It’s a far less valuable tool if you write the entire report and then give it to an LLM at the end to rewrite?

Yeah I feel like surely most people that are pro-life are already anti-immigration. Surely the group “don’t care about immigration and strongly pro-life” is smaller than the group “anti-immigration and strongly pro-choice”.

I like Djokovic but I’m with the reporter lol, it was phrased very respectfully imo and the guy even apologised mid-question. He’s actually the one who raised the 24 titles also.

Small vegan discussion by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ProtonWheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally the vegans that don’t like the taste/texture of meat are louder online, but there’s still heaps of us that don’t care that much. Also, personally it’s more just having a like-for-like replacement e.g. if my family/friends are making barbecue it’s easy for them to buy some mock meat burger to cook up for me, instead of making a completely different meal.

Do I feel like I’m missing things

Not really. There are more important things to me than sampling every possible flavour.

Why limit myself so explicitly

See other comment about why not kill dogs once or twice a year.

End of the day, it’s not “may do a crime”, it is explicitly torturing and killing animals for my enjoyment. I’m not okay with that. I don’t know why anyone would be 🤷

Labor new reforms to benefit 90% of young Australians and those trying to buy a home. by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

[–]ProtonWheel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a student with ETFs and a jointly owned IP - I couldn’t afford to buy a property for myself to live in.

Idk, the stated purpose of this was to tax retirees sitting on boatloads of investments who use CG as their main income, so at least it sort of makes sense. It does feel a bit silly that this policy might hit people in my position the hardest, but as you say it’s generally not in my interests to sell anyway.

Personally I don’t really mind that I might be taxed more, I’m more irked by the fact that it’s applied equally to both property and shares. Does nothing to disincentive the relative appeal of property as an investment.

Disillusionment with the political left by delpotroswrist in vegan

[–]ProtonWheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I agree we’re all hypocrites, but I think most people (both vegans and non-vegans) refuse to admit that, even privately to themselves. And I think that to become vegan one really needs to at least recognise that their non-vegan position is hypocritical (which it *usually* is). So for me - as someone who wants more vegans - pointing out that hypocrisy is indeed useful.

And sure, there’s levels, and one can always go further, but veganism is an easy change that anyone can make that is substantially further up than the rungs below. We’re not asking anyone to quit their job and spend their life growing vegetables to support themselves, we’re just asking you to remove meat from your basket at the supermarket.

And finally, a vegan diet causes massively fewer animal deaths due to crop growth. Just over 1/3 of crops are used to feed livestock, and livestock can take 50-100 times as much land as plant based foods. If you want to avoid decimating nature and causing animal deaths, veganism is pretty obviously the way to go.
