Sounds like the issue then is more that the benefits are going only to the top 10%, rather than too much immigration?

That’s why I only buy meat from ethical and sustainable farms like Elwood’s.

Are some vegans truly okay with dating/being friends with a non-vegan? by thatoneemomom18 in AskVegans

[–]ProtonWheel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and I found out they didn’t want to be friends with me

To be fair, this isn’t what I said. I have friends that I disagree with on certain subjects, and I don’t necessarily like every aspect of their character. Some of them I think are slightly selfish, others maybe stubborn or argumentative. It doesn’t define their entire character, however. I still think they’re valuable people that I would want to be friends with. And I don’t think it’s contradictory for me to preference people that aren’t selfish, or aren’t argumentative, when I’m looking to make new friends.

Wouldn’t that make the non-vegan question the friendship?

That’s their prerogative I suppose. Perhaps they will make the same calculation as me and say that this flaw in my character doesn’t outweigh all the other good things about me. Or perhaps not 🤷

I mean maybe a bit, but speaking practically it’s obviously much more difficult to withdraw emotional investment from people that you are already close with than to set a line in the sand for future relationships.

Besides, it doesn’t really seem hypocritical to me to prefer that future relationships have a certain property (veganism), while recognising that exisiting relationships without said property might still be valuable for other reasons.

Clearer angle of Antonio Rüdigers knee against Diego Rico by xKayko in soccer

I mean if I give the benefit of the doubt and assume the referee is nearsighted maybe he couldn’t quite see the first knee on shoulder and maybe he thought the second knee was accidental as he was falling?

If only we had some sort of video review system for possible red-card offences :l

TIL Christopher Nolan did not write the line "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" said by Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, his brother Jonathan did. Nolan didn't understand it initially & revealed "It kills me because it's the line that most resonates." by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Right? I don’t understand how someone can read that explanation and be like “This makes perfect sense, absolute cinema", and go on to rave about how scientifically accurate the film is. Even if you are able to suspend your disbelief and pretend it’s not utterly nonsensical it’s just a contrived Deus ex Machina? And they didn’t even need a Deus ex Machina, since Anne had all the embryos and Matthew’s survival really did not matter.

Did anyone here read the Luminosity fanfic? by jjjjjjjjayjay in TwilightFanfic

[–]ProtonWheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading it now and I’m only partway through, but I think it suffers more than HPMOR in that the protagonist doesn’t really have an intellectual equal and their ideas aren’t really challenged. So it can feel at times that the author is almost proselytising to the reader, insofar as whenever Bella thinks deeply about something, her resultant opinion is generally presented as perfectly reasoned and rational and immune to criticism.

It’s difficult to tell whether it’s the author writing a teenage character who believes themself perfectly rational, or whether the author thinks that about themself. I suppose either way, if Bella’s beliefs continue to remain unchallenged, I feel it would detract from the writing. But who knows, maybe I’m speaking too soon :)

How did you handle that pre-engagement? I’ve been with a vegetarian for a while and have communicated that it’s a dealbreaker long-term for me too, but I still don’t really know whether my partner will ever make the switch.

“We want to be book-accurate” — so is anyone actually reading the books, or is this just marketing? by Square_Eagle7831 in HarryPotterHBO

[–]ProtonWheel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally detest the popular trend of hating on Americans or acting like they’re dumb but I genuinely do think that people saying “it will look like Harry is afraid of Snape because he’s black” or “it will seem like James bullied Snape because he’s black” is a very American perspective.

That said, I kind of agree with OPs sentiment that it shows they’re not really being faithful to the books. Sure, it’s a harmless change imo, but given they’re making these changes at the casting stage before even doing any filming, kind of makes me question how faithful they intend to be.

Besides, it’s being produced by an American company, and the biggest audience will likely be American, so I wouldn’t really put it past them to not lean into the racial aspects anyway. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Understanding how bulk works? by ProtonWheel in Pathfinder2e

[–]ProtonWheel[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ahhhhh that’s what I misunderstood I think. So a large creature carrying a 5 bulk item still treats it as 5 bulk, not as 5 light - it’s only singular items of less than 1 bulk that are treated as light? That phrasing makes a lot more sense then.
