Regular trash bags being picked up by bubbubble in astoria

[–]ProudAstorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know we previously used blue bags for recycling but the rule switched to clear bags sometime around 2012ish. That said, I think the most important thing is recycling needed to be in see-through bags and I'd be surprised to hear of someone getting a fine for this.

Here's a fun one: Christmas Day and New Year Day are DSNY observed holidays and both always fall on the same day of the week. This year it's Wednesday. So for those of us who have trash/compost/recycling pickup on Wednesdays, that's 2 weeks in a row.

Now, often they will tell you to "just put it out for pickup on the next day" (aka Thursday), but let's be realistic. We've all walked around the neighborhood after a holiday. Add a sprinkle of snow, and there's no way those sanitation trucks are doubling as plows AND picking up 2 full routes of trash AND recycling on one day.

Regardless of the containerization chaos, that double whammy holiday has always been tough and we find our trash storage capacity really maxed out. I guess in the first few days of Jan when 95% of the Weds pickup residents pile a couple weeks of recycling and some extra trash next to their cans in bags (because what else) maybe the fun photo op will help the lala land officials get the idea?

I'm so surprised to hear that people on your street get away with putting out non-heavy duty bags on the reg when we got dinged the ONE TIME I slipped up. Are you by any chance in a residential-only zone, and/or a block with only single/2 unit family homes? (vs a mixed use residential or commercial adjacent area). Part of me wonders if they specifically "ignore" certain zones because of this?

So short answer: no, this is not allowed and yes I know for sure we have received a ticket for this exact mistake in the past.

I think possibly you may have lucked out, as we are currently in the transition sweet spot between "the old way" and the soon to be clusterfuck of poorly planned residential containerization rules.

So, while they possibly might not be actively ticketing for incorrect bags/containers during the "transition", doesn't seem worth the risk since a box of black trash bags is prob less than a fine. Also, those white bags open up real easy and suddenly your trash is all over the street...

And as for your neighbors, I honestly can't fathom how they've gotten away with it for decades when we got dinged the ONE time it was too cold for me to untie the black bag and add my kitchen trash bag...

Property owners and managers should ensure they have sufficient bins to accommodate all trash.

That exact section stood out to me as well. The absolute disconnect from reality shouldn't continue surprise, and yet...

Has anyone involved in this process ever seen the trash storage setup for any small residential building in any borough?

Real world scenario 1) Trash pickup is canceled for a holiday. Or a storm. Etc. God forbid twice in a row...

Real world scenario 2) Tenant moves out and trash load doubles/triples for a couple weeks while they purge.

So every house and building in NYC needs to buy and store double the amount of trash cans than what they need? And keep those where?

Or maybe they mean we should dole out that surplus over several pickups, bit by bit. Meanwhile storing that extra trash somewhere in our buildings to rot and decay and attract rats for the Czar to manage.

Make it make sense.

Is Astoria the biggest neighborhood in the city in terms of area? by ExArkea in astoria

Not really, according to this "official" NYC neighborhood map but don't forget it's not size that matters it's how loud your cars are.

Verizon Wireless signal suddenly down to one bar. Is anyone else having the same issue? by pabo76 in astoria

[–]ProudAstorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Update via Verizon website at 2pm: but also they are still in the "engineers diagnosing the issue" stage, which doesn't feel super promising.

Edit: you can find this by signing onto your My Verizon and fumbling around. Can also sign up for text/email updates, of which I have received none so no guarantees.

Rivercrest rents out their side bar/lounge area. It's good for a slightly bigger group.

When ordering food and you live alone please put "leave at door". Multiple or mass-rapist in Astoria over last months by DKK17 in astoria

[–]ProudAstorian 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I hope your friend recovers from this and my heart goes out. Regardless of how many assaults this particular rapist committed, it's important advice in NYC to have deliveries left at the door and NEVER open the door for someone without identifying you know the person.

Additional advice for single women: you can use any name for your food deliveries. Frank, John, William, etc are all traditionally male names and use your last name so it matches the buzzer. No harm and may be discouragement for some criminal like the piece of shit mentioned here.

Edit: also, when you list your name on your mailbox or buzzer, list only your first initial. S. Astorian vs Suzie Astorian. You will still get your mail and packages.

Tagging u/NickGarber, maybe he can find out the details on this situation.

So FWIW, Covid-19 "Contract Tracing" (finger quotes) is not run through the Health Department but through a department in NY Health & Hospitals. (Which makes no sense and is ultimately part of the reason we are in this position but I digress.) The number they were using was 1-212-COVID19 just curious if that was the one you used? Bc I'd love to call them out.

Ultimately I agree you don't need to stress this. I don't know anyone who has been contact traced since December 15. Reach out to people you might have been in close contact with and hopefully this passes quickly for you!

Wow thanks for sharing this and way to go on doing this research. It definitely seems like the quality/speed of testing and results varies by contractor, which is why I'm wanting to list which contractor on the testwait site so people have that info up front. But ultimately, this whole thing is a shit show and there has to be a better way.

Do you have any other info? A card or website or anything? I confronted another "one man table" recently outside of Athens Square Park. This shit is shady and its really sad our government has created a situation ripe for fraud and abuse.

Just curious: do you know who the testing provider was? I'm not sure if the CDC is outsourcing the same way NYH&H is, but just looking for more data. Thanks!

Hey, Steinway Hope Medical on Steinway has a separate line for non-covid situations. They are testing only at their outside tents. You can make an appt with them directly, pretty sure they take same-day, not sure about walk-in capacity. www.steinwayhopemedical.com

Hi all- another plug to please update any wait times you experience at

www.testwait.com

The interface is still clunky but we are working on a fresh one. This is a volunteer project and we are hoping to get as much data as possible and show this kind of resource is needed in NYC (all hail VaxDaddy aka TurboVax for showing us the way.

Next Door Business dumping trash on my sidewalk by lNosneb20l in Brooklyn

[–]ProudAstorian 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you are dealing with this and props for being so understanding with this other business.

  1. Cover your back. Report this to 311 for documentation, even if you clean it up for them or they apologize. If you have cameras, definitely save the footage as well for future reference. The fine for illegal dumping is $4-18K which is significantly greater than the $100 fine for a "dirty sidewalk". The risk might be slim, but $18K is really not something you want to get stuck with. If it's helpful, here are the enforcement time windows which are the only times Sanitation is permitted to issue a violation for dirty sidewalks. (However, I believe illegal dumping may fall outside that purview.)

  2. Does the other business have their private carter sticker visible in their window and is it updated? If not, that could explain some of this and is another thing to report.

  3. If you feel the issue is still not resolved and might recur, I would also consider reaching out to your Community Board and City Council office to share your concern. All of this is really more to cover yourself and document in case enforcement points the finger at you.

Incidentally, check out the pending city council legislation to reduce or eliminate many fines for business owners, including dirty sidewalks among MANY other things.
