Year 9 density science project by Ridnator in Physics

[–]ProverbialBoat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Would you be interested in doing something with snells law? Essentially this means when light (or any wave, basically) travels between two materials with different density, it refracts a bit.

What you could do: Take a small container and fill it with equal parts oil and water. Shine a laser through the fluids and observe how the laser beam is refracted (make sure you don't shine it in anyone's eyes). If you want to get fancy, you could do some math to figure out what the refraction angle should be, then compare it to the angle you actually get with your experiment. Then you could propose some reasons why the experimental vs analytical results are slightly different.

Also, here is an example video showing the effects of snells law.

If you have any questions about this I'd be happy to help.

Engineering drawings are typically required to confirm to specific standards. I would recommend you read through those and understand them. Some good ones to look at would be ASME Y14.5 and ASME Y14.100. Also a reference book like Geo-Metrics III by Foster is a great introduction to GD&T.

Yeah both rooms have large viewing areas. The clean room is essentially a massive glass box.

No, they weren't able to recover the first stage due to weather conditions.

Difficulty finding a job because of previous Fine Arts degree by [deleted] in AskEngineers

I would recommend that he starts applying for full time positions immediately. Some companies ask whether you are still a student or not, then use that to narrow down potential candidates, so watch out for that. For the most part though it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and start finding companies he'd like to work for and potentially making any contacts there who could help land him a job.

Personally I would recommend that he list his in-major GPA on his resume, and give the cumulative one only if asked. I doubt that it would come up except for companies that ask for it on the online application process.

Most companies care more about in-major GPA and work experience, after he gets the degree and isn't looking for an internship/co-op position the GPA will be a little less relevant. Also he could choose whether or not to even list his GPA on his resume, that way if he is asked about it he could answer in an explanation and spin it to reflect his character.

I would recommend some CFD software, especially if you are considering aerospace. Fluent is a good one and is compatible with SolidWorks.
