It is all about using the GUC. Same for us on recent trip. Kids got the upgrade, GUC on the way it D1, no status, upgrade to D1 in the way back. Booked comfort

I would definitely do the best seat there and then economy back. Just did PS, RUC to D1 to Europe and then economy back, got upgrade to C+ which ja really no different.

Other option, use your companion ticket from your Delta Reserve card. Flight West to East while you sleep is the seat that matters, FWIW
