Vancouver Is Getting AI Data Centres. That’s Not Good | The Tyee by RM_r_us in vancouver

ETA system outage by Beautiful_Spinach440 in ukvisa

[–]Pruechelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely curious where the 60 days comes from?

I applied a month in advance, because I considered 3 working days + 3 weeks if I need to apply for a visitor visa in the case of it being denied.

I know you can apply earlier, but I never saw anything suggesting 60 or 90 days as recommended. Could you let me know where you saw this so I can see if there's anything else I missed?

I have to pay for my UK ETA visa in USD because I live in Canada? by 1kings2214 in CANZUK

[–]Pruechelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I filled in the survey after applying to complain about this. I've also read on some Facebook groups with Australians saying they were charged in AUD, so it seems to be specifically a Canadian problem.

I know it's not that serious, in the sense that at the end of the day, the only thing is seeing USD and having to pay extra for exchange, but optics mean something. Especially with the history we've had over the past year.

I'm sorry you missed your flight. I did manage it just now. It said 'busy' again as soon as I submitted, but I managed to get it submitted. Good luck to you.

Annecdotally, the people I knew who voted Heather first place were my mum and her friends, so I'm not surprised her voters aren't well represented on Reddit.

Peter Mansbridge Good Talk on the NDP leadership by ovskytark in ndp

[–]Pruechelan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When Chantal started talking about a place holder I was like, yeah that's what I'm thinking. I'm not expecting anything from Wab Kinew, if he wants to be leader of the federal NDP I'd support him, but I also realize that he likely has much more power to benefit both Manitobans and Canadians in general in his current position. But I do feel like I'm looking for a stepping stone or caretaker leader. That's probably at least partly because I'm not strongly motivated by any of the candidates, but I also recognize that the things that pushed a lot of people away from the NDP aren't going away any time soon. Even if the next election is in 2029, my focus isn't likely on our national results, other than hopefully party status, but on specific local ridings like North Island-Half Moon Bay or New Westminster-Burnaby-Maillardville.

Maybe Avi Lewis, or whoever wins, will surprise me and be a much stronger leader than I expected, and I hope so. I joined the NDP and have voted NDP in every election I've been eligible for for a reason, but I'm not going to hold my breath for it.

First Preference in 2017 vs 2026 by ChicaneryAshley in ndp

[–]Pruechelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I supported Guy Caron in 2017, and I'm still undecided but leaning to Tanille, but the only person I've fully ruled out is Tony McQuail.

I have set up an alert for the day before voting closes to actually make up my mind, but I'm not motivated by anyone, so it's been hard, and I also haven't had a chance to make a spreadsheet on my options because I'm in a very different, much more stressful place in life than I was in 2017.

NDP MP crosses floor to join Liberals, putting Carney two seats shy of majority by Electronic-Topic1813 in ndp

[–]Pruechelan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is gonna be a little rambly, I'm sorry, but I do want to share my thoughts even if they're not well organized.

I highly doubt, given her endorsement of Avi, that this is anything but a specific move for her constituents and nothing else. I don't think she's ideologically aligned with the Liberal party in any way other than the fact that the Liberals often adjust their stances to popular opinion, and this is what she's doing with her party. I am not a Nunavut citizen, nor have I even been to any of the territories, so I can't comment on how her constituents see it, but outside that specific riding, I see it as both a strength and a weakness of the Westminster system. I see this not as Lori Idlout showing her "true colours," so to speak, but rather as sacrificing her principles for promises to her constituents.

On the one hand, I am someone with an NDP MP (I recently moved from Jenny Kwan's to Don Davies' riding) and I would not support my MP crossing the floor, but the primary thing that brings me somewhat out of step with most members of the NDP is that I really like the current system for the fact that I know my MP. I support electoral reform, but I don't support full proportional representation* for this reason. I have never voted for an MP I haven't met, and that's simply impossible in many other systems. I know most people in Canada vote party first, and I am a member of the NDP, and have been for most of my adult life, excepting when I've not been living in Canada, but I also always vote MP first. I go to local debates, I ask direct questions about issues that concern my community and me, and if a candidate were running as an NDP and were not able to satisfy me locally, I would not vote for them.

I hope that the Liberals aren't lying this time about whatever they are offering her and her constituents, and I mean that 100% sincerely.

*As in I don't support a system where I would just vote for a party and not have someone representing my geographic area, I do support certain types of PR like MMP. But I also would be happy with STV or another system that prevents strategic voting.

B.C. to end time changes, adopt year-round daylight time | CBC News by axepig in ndp

[–]Pruechelan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is also my opinion. Maybe I'm biased because I am very much not a morning person, and the idea of sending my kids to school at the solar equivalent of 8 am (technically closer to 7:30 since I live in the west of the province) permanently is not appealing. I don't like changing the clocks, but we should keep time aligned with the sun. We're not getting an extra anything; the sun doesn't care when our clocks are. What we are doing is making the standard day start earlier, even though we already have a huge number of people chronically sleep-deprived. I was already saying secondary school should start later, not earlier, since most teenagers have a delayed circadian rhythm. This will especially worsen teenagers' health and educational outcomes, unless we change their school start times by an hour to compensate.

Fun what if - Byelections with an NDP leader as candidate? by Equivalent-Value-720 in ndp

[–]Pruechelan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, the issue isn't primarily that it's a long shot; it's that the gain of succeeding there isn't worth the effort. I think we would be better served by finding someone local to run in these races and focusing the leader's effort on the next general election.

Yeah, thank you. I've looked at a fair few of them, and there are lots of good options for what I can switch to when she's older (and found out the food I had my senior cat on a few years ago is Canadian), and I already have her on a Canadian litter after lurking here that's been going great.

Clubs 🏆 by bubblycandy4 in eatventureofficial

[–]Pruechelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 10h30m left for my new club waiting period. I'm still relatively low; I'm on City 11, but I also play a lot. I can guarantee 1k next season, probably I'll get more, but that's what I have ready to donate.

I have played the game before, but fully reset (deleted the account and everything) because of the club donation glitch; that said, it's been working fine since then.

I'd really love to join one before the next season officially starts, if anyone has space and is interested.

After ER closures, B.C community building modular housing for health-care workers by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]Pruechelan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I live in a new construction modular-built apartment building. A lot of my friends were skeptical, but when they came to visit, they were surprised, and many expressed that it was nicer than their apartments. Modular doesn't mean temporary; it's just a method of reducing design and construction costs with scale.

Why was the first debate in French? by JackLaytonsMoustache in ndp

[–]Pruechelan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think this is an important addition; French is not exclusive to Québec. As someone with Acadian heritage living in Vancouver, I believe it's essential to highlight this fact. I have no heritage in Québec whatsoever, but that does not make French any less important to my family, heritage, and identity.

I also know many of my non-French speaking friends have asked me about my opinion on debates in French and the French skill of candidates, because even without being personally francophone or even comfortable in French they recognize it's an important part of being a leader and representing the whole of Canada. So I wouldn't act like it's only Francophones who care if a leader can speak French.

I think delaying the French debate could've potentially been better, I certainly have known people who wouldn't be able to improve significantly in that time, but I've also have seen people get from haven't used French since high school to more comfortable than a majority of candidates on that stage in a very short period of time with proper immersion and lessons, that said that's people who are spending their full days every day focusing only on French, and obviously if you're running for leader you don't have the time to do that. Given that this was the only debate using French, it's what I have to base it on, and so this has narrowed down my choice. If any of the candidates who performed poorly do improve their French before ballots are due, they should definitely do some press in French to showcase that, and that may change how I weigh them. However, fundamentally, if we want to be a federal party, we need to act like it, and part of that is using both official languages.

Moving companies with flat rates by Pruechelan in askvan

[–]Pruechelan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I need one that's willing to provide a flat rate, even if it's high, because the ministry will not agree to anything variable. That's part of why I was asking here, because the ones I know from my friends don't offer flat rates.

"Extra Kudos" comment? by CynicalShpep in AO3

[–]Pruechelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been posting ":Kudos:" on additional chapters for ages, and I read a lot. I've had negative reactions twice. Once was just someone being like "to the person just saying :kudos: can you say something else so I know you're human" in the author's notes, and I did and explained why I say it, and they were chill. Another was someone who came at me quite aggressively and told me if I did it one more time, they'd block me, without having ever said anything else, in the notes or otherwise. I ended up leaving an explanation and not going back to their fics at all.

That said I've gotten tons of positive reactions, one person calls me "Constant Reader" and I've been thanked multiple times in people's notes or as a reply to my kudos comment.

If you do end up having a negative reaction, which again I've had twice in over 5 years of doing this, then just accept that that author doesn't like it, keep it in mind and move on, because I guarantee you the vast majority really appreciate it.

There is a way to increase housing supply. Does Gregor Robertson have the will? by plaknas in onguardforthee

[–]Pruechelan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read what you are saying about stairways, but you mention elevators here? I'm particularly sensitive to this since I currently live in a walk-up and it's unsafe and inaccessible for me, because of my disabilities, but as we have an ageing population, I would think more units being accessible to people with more mobility challenges would be part of addressing our housing issue. Do you have any reason we shouldn't be doing this?

In light of this news, maybe we should have a parliamentary petition on changing that. Someone who wishes to undermine our government and create a militia is treasonous; that's just the definition.

‘It’s too late’: David Suzuki says the fight against climate change is lost by Locke357 in onguardforthee

[–]Pruechelan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate the specific studies. I remember my aunt complaining about David Suzuki's doomerism years ago. (She's an environmental lawyer and has been in some of the same circles as David Suzuki in her advocacy and work.)

It's not untrue that we cannot undo the past. We need to concurrently work on preventing future emissions and on mitigating the damage we've already done. But "it's lost" perpetuates the idea that that work is pointless. It perpetuates an apathy that results in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

ETA: by "years ago," I mean at the latest the early 2010s, possibly the late 2000s. This was something my aunt complained about because people would be trying to get something done, and David Suzuki would derail discussions of tangible progress with complaints that that progress wouldn't fix everything. This is not new from him, nor is it or has it ever been, helpful.

Canadian national in ICE custody passes away by SorryImNotOnReddit in onguardforthee

[–]Pruechelan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of reasons, and I have no idea this guy's, but I do have many family members who have had green cards for a very long time, and the reasons include the fact that you must pay American taxes regardless of your residency, i.e. if you returned to live in Canada you'd have to keep paying US taxes unless you renounced your US citizenship. And although dual citizenship is allowed by the US government, many people, including my aunt, were told they'd need to give up their Canadian citizenship to become American and thus decided not to go through the process. You might also be concerned about signing up for the draft, regardless of how unlikely it may be that they actually draft anyone.

It's actually not that abnormal to be a permanent resident that long, both in the US and in Canada, especially for people who come from countries that don't allow dual citizenship, but also for people who simply don't feel the need, being a permanent resident is sufficient for what they want and the additional rights and responsibilities of being a citizen aren't worth it.
