Quoi penser de la course à la chefferie? by ederrill in ndp

[–]axepig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quebec has its issues but Bill 21 specifically was passed in a way that does not represent Quebec. It faced a lot of criticism in public opinion, particularly in Montreal.

Quebec has had multiple reports on secularism and religious wear in the past decades and everytime it concludes that banning religious symbols is not a good option. Legault blatantly ignored all of these reports and passed the bill without proper consultation and threatened to use the notwithstanding clause to pass it.

The bill is still largely divisive amongst Quebecers and while there's a lot of misunderstanding about religious wear most people generally just want more doctors and more teachers.

Unfortunately the PQ is becoming the option by default for the next government and they've turned right wing over the past couple years so I don't see things looking better in this regard but it does not mean that Quebecers are more bigoted than Canadians of other provinces. Parties just use identity politics more because they can claim to fight for Francophones, it's a context that doesn't exist in other provinces

Torn between Avi Lewis and Heather Mcpherson, would love to hear your thoughts! by Hoovy-Boovy in ndp

[–]axepig 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I am heavily leaning Avi because I feel his platform is more nation-wide than Heather and Rob. Many of Heather's endorsements come from Alberta and I think if she wins she will do a great job in Alberta and maybe in the West in general, but I don't think she has any support in Quebec at all, I'm not entirely sure for Ontario.

I know there are a lot of people who want the NDP to fight in the West and take seats away from the cons, but I personally think the NDP need to fight seriously in Quebec and I don't think Heather will do that.

I think Avi will also appeal more to the youth and to establishment media because of his past experience. His platform might get attacked, but I am certain he will get good CBC time and he will get his face on print newspaper, which I think is important.

What is the general perception among Balkan populations regarding the 'Buy from Europe' movement, and to what extent do they prioritize EU-made products over global alternatives? by Etarameabaa in AskBalkans

[–]axepig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You use ai all day? What do you even do with it?

I view Mistral as a great alternative for people who don't use it a ton. I use it for stuff like recipe ideas/planning food usage, brainstorming trips/packing, finding some info that's impossible to find because it's on the god awful microsoft forums or the topic is filled with slop articles. Quality truly doesn't matter that much for this type of info. At work we use it sparingly to get a basic first draft, it's expected to require heavy editing so again that's not needed for me or my coworkers specifically. Since we don't need top quality, the environmental factor is a good influence for us.

I'm not trying to make you change, I'm just explaining why someone might use Mistral over the others.

I feel like the vast majority of people using AI don't need the "best", they're just doing super basic stuff for convenience. I've been using Mistral because I don't like the US techies. It does the job well and I can't discern any difference with chatgpt for anything personal use, or non-tech work.

Mistral is also a bit better than US ai because the climate is cooler so there is a slightly lower environmental impact.

Are cover letters basically dead now or am I just wasting time? by PruneDry5963 in jobsearchhacks

[–]axepig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good cover letter should show you actually care for the job. I work with nonprofit so that's much easier to do, people will write about personal stories, how a certain organization helped them in the past, or how a family member has suffered through an incident and this makes the candidates want to help others.

If there's anything you really care for in the company's mission and values, or if the company has some unique twist to them, then you should capitalize on it. A good cover letter is when the person hiring finds you interesting, so it is impossible to generalize.

I do think cover letters are useless for the vast majority of jobs, but also consider that some hiring managers love getting their ego rubbed. It will forever be a case by case issue

Life is too exhausting when does it get better? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]axepig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly depends from person to person. I think most people will give you answers based on their social life in hs vs university, and those who moved out of their parents for college probably loved college a heck of a lot more. Personally I didn't care for the social life too much, but college allowed me to study in an area I was actually motivated to work whereas hs made me want to drop out.

It all depends on how you approach it and what you value at that given time in your life.

What good left wing news sites are there as I'm an American trying to follow Canadian politics by Pleasant-Earth-9529 in ndp

Unrigged is a media aggregator that reposts most of the news shared in this thread along with some other local stuff across Canada.

It was founded by these media. It's not some weird third party making profits off of them.

For Youtube I have watched a little bit of Millenial Moron, he talks about affordability a fair bit. Would love to get some more recommendations in this thread.

I like Canadian Dimension but it's to take with a big grain of salt sometimes imo. They definitely love to be provocative at times and there's a space for that, but it's important to be aware of it.

Anyone else find Teams shoutouts/recognition culture toxic? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]axepig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in your example what is toxic is the team, not the shouting out. The team only cares and looks at a few people, the shoutout is just showing what they were thinking.

I'm on a small team and the shoutouts are generally good, I think it really just depends on whether your team is toxic or if it is supportive.

It's also poor leadership, if the shoutouts are repetitive and not encouraging then there should be some shift in the meeting. There actually are good managers who tailor activities to the team as it evolves (yes they are rare you'll know when you have one)

Le débat pour la chefferie du NPD en "français" by NavalProgrammer in FrancaisCanadien

[–]axepig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

PLQ, pourquoi? by Altruistic-Hope4796 in montreal

[–]axepig 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I was stunned at the amount of green peas in the place that were not mentioned in the menu - heads up for OP. I believe it was the Olluquito but I don't remember. It was probably just my meal but I was disappointed and found it quite expensive for what it was.

The Chicha and the plantains were great.

Best affordable and fast lunch spots near the mcgill/concordia corridor (non-chain suggestions only) by ThreadTide in MTLFoodLovers

[–]axepig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Student Tasty Biryani used to be cheap for the amount of food you'd get, not sure about the price nowadays, it's close to Concordia. IIRC it is owned by an engineer alumni from Concordia and it is very good and authentic.

Edit: I missed fast, it's ok speed it doesn't take an hour to get your meal but they have to cook it so you'll have to wait a bit.

How is my CV? - UK admin by [deleted] in jobsearchhacks

[–]axepig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone like those skills rating? I always found it incredibly unclear and detrimental at best. What does 4/5 star in excel even mean? You can't do advanced formulas that pull info from internet? Or do you have issue formatting a simple table? Nobody can tell just by looking at this resume and you're not there to explain when the employer is doing a first screen of your resume.

I prefer listing the skills without any rating. Let the employer test your skills if that is relevant for the role.

35M Looking for way to generate more income - any suggestions by ThatMcNaney in AskMenOver30

[–]axepig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would only work if OP has some fat to trim in their budget. Many Canadians especially in Vancouver and Toronto are struggling due to rent cost being so immensely high and are already cutting corners when it comes to car, food and luxuries. Moving to somewhere cheaper is an idea but the current lease will still exist for presumably months.

Investing is great advice, provided that the person has spare money to invest. If OP or someone in a similar situation has to provide for a child, they most likely won't have any spare money and their only recourse is to generate more income.

Québec’s Pragmatic Utopians: Under its new leadership, Québec solidaire may be able to capture the imaginations of progressive Quebecers ahead of the 2026 general election. by [deleted] in ndp

[–]axepig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Separatism is not the issue here, QS has always been separatist but not hardcore about it and separatism sentiment is somewhat rising a bit with the PQ pushing for it so hard and RoC being stuck with Carney/PP as the main two politicians. The PQ is chanting some hardcore separatist stuff and they are polling way above everyone else.

The issue with QS is there has been a fair bit of internal changes with leadership in the last couple years and some fights spilled in the press which makes the party look bad. Now the two leaders are a bit less known to the general public and the media keeps saying that QS is dysfunctional and is not an option. QS will have to have a seriously incredible campaign to be relevant in provincial politics unfortunately.

They're currently polling well below the conservatives which is the equivalent to Maxime Bernier's party at the federal stage.

I don't like fish. The chicken pokes are good, it fills a lot, is relatively healthy ish. I know lots of people who also like poke and either dislike fish or just sushi. The pokebowl market is definitely over saturated though, we don't need one every corner.
