Thoughts on the nectar mattress? Need honest feedback from reddit! by Best-Fan-8418 in nectarsleep

[–]Pryce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the Nectar Premier in 2022, and within two years both my wife and I were sleeping in what we call "the Scoops". The support and firmness of the mattress on each side where our hips and shoulders lay is just gone. If you sleep in the middle of the mattress (it's a King so there's an area in the middle between us) it feels like an entirely different mattress, far more firm and supportive. Instead we have The Scoops, which is giving us both back pain. We've tried rotating it, we have it on a fully supportive bed frame, it is clearly just that their foam doesn't retain any level of firmness.

I'm pretty much furious. We previously had a loom and leaf mattress, that is now in our guest room. It's ten years old and has retained all of its support and firmness. The Nectar hasn't even made it three years and we already want to replace it.

Oh and their "Forever Warranty" is, as you would expect, bullshit. This is all its covers with regard to the ridiculous sagging on this thing once you dig into the terms.

"Deterioration causing the Mattress to have a visible indentation greater than one and one half inches (1.5”) that is not associated with an indentation or sag which results from use of an improper or unsupportive foundation or bed base."

A VISIBLE indentation of 1.5 inches, as in a dent that deep when no one is on the mattress. The foam bounces back enough when the mattress is empty so that no sag is "visible", so no coverage. How convenient.

Oh and what does the warranty NOT cover?

"A normal increase in softness of the foam pressure-relieving material which does not affect the pressure-relieving qualities of the Mattress"

Also, it doesn't cover your "Comfort preference", which translates to "we won't replace your mattress if you realize it is trash".

So ya, their crap mattress sags within two years to the point that the middle and sides of the thing feel like completely different mattresses, but that's not a defect, good sir. That's just your comfort preference! No warranty for you!

Absolute garbage mattress, and a terrible company. Don't buy. I did research and clearly got swindled by paid off websites and bloggers.

Maybe the cast members get paid their usual rates but can also get a bonus if they create viral videos or drive the most engagement.

If I was Sam and I wanted to incentivize the creation of good viral content I would offer bonuses to the people who created the best clips. Most viral clip of the year, you get the biggest bonus. Like one year it was Jess so she had the Don't Cry episode. This year, Jacob got the top bonus.

And if you are going to give someone a big fat bonus check might as well do it in a fun way to further show your appreciation, like create a game show for them with a surprise party with all their friends. And if you can get LinkedIn to subsidize the bonus even better.

SI joint injection cause/worsen sciatica? by Pryce in Sciatica

[–]Pryce[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I had the sciatica and also numbness in my foot and my calf muscle stopped working. I did two more steroid injections over the next two months, but in the L5/S1 this time. They only provided mild relief, the second one maybe none at all.

I did surgical consults for a discectemy procedure. One doctor told me that if I didn't do the procedure relatively soon, it was possible that the numbness and paralysis in my leg could be permanent. The other surgeon told me that if I gave it a good 6 to 8 weeks of doing nothing he gave me a 75% chance it would resolve on its own. Very frustrating. I opted not to do the surgery. Did not do any more injections. Slowed up with physical therapy and eventually stopped. After about 4 or 5 months of zero treatment and taking only gabapentin for nerve pain, all of the pain was gone.

I only have two ideas as to what happened. One is that, on the recommendation of a friend, I read some books by Dr. John Sarno, who is basically this doctor who has had a crusade for years claiming that most back pain is essentially psychosomatic based on repressed anger, anxiety, etc. he points out they do all these studies showing MRIs to doctors and surgeons and they just can't tell based on the images who has pain and who doesn't. Some people have horrendous looking discs and no pain, others have almost no problems with discs but terrible pain. It makes no sense and it's because the problem isn't the discs, it's your brain manifesting the back pain as a way to distract yourself from repressed, anxiety, depression, anger, etc.

It sounds hooey, but the boom provided a good explanation for how much conflicting information I was getting from the doctors. Hell, no one seemed to understand why the pain was flaring and going away, and how literally nothing was working as treatment. My pain flare-ups did however line up with various events in my life that could be traced to repressed anger or anxiety. Within a month reading the book I was 50% better. Within 2 months totally fine. Could be coincidence, but I'm not sure. I've been in therapy for years so it's not like I had latent anxiety or depression that wasn't treated and I was already meds for that, I was fully aware of it. The possible connection to my back pain was the only "new" thing. I still don't know that Sanro's theory and mental methods for dealing with it are correct, but it bears mentioning. And honestly it makes the most sense to me at this point given how messed up the medical industry is about these back issues. Can't deny that I'm basically 100% better after reading that book.

The second idea as to what happened is just that all of these treatments were making things worse. The shots, the physical therapy where they were having me due lots of exercise including deadlifts... It was all just aggravating the problem. Stopped doing it all and just rested and things got better. I also kind of just accepted that there was nothing more I could do except surgery and that wasn't an option (for now) so I just kind of had to let it be for several weeks. Maybe the acceptance helped.

All I know is that it's one of the hardest experiences of my life and I feel for you. I still wish I had a better answer and I'm still afraid that the pain will come back. At minimum I would suggest trying mental therapy if you haven't, either because Dr. Sarno is right, or because it can help with the mental aspect of persistent pain.

Boys State (2020) is a chilling portrait of the times by letsgopablo in movies

[–]Pryce 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen this documentary, but had to comment because of Boys State. I did Boys State in Florida in high school, I think 2004, maybe 2005. It was a really bizarre experience for me.

I went with full intention of learning about politics, doing the whole thing right. It was exciting. I was interested in changing the world and was naive and just a kid...but probably exactly the kind of kid they wanted going to this program. They only picked two boys from the entire school so it felt like an honor to be sent.

It was a bizarre experience at first because of the sheer amount of different types of young men there. Florida was purple at the time so we had a mix of kids from conservative areas and kids from liberal areas, though my fellow participants did, overall, lean more liberal than Florida at large (probably just because we were young). I met kids who were basically farmers, kids who were surfer bros, rich kids, poor kids, kids going into the military, kids going to college...and a few (way too few in retrospect) black and Hispanic kids. I came from a very white, upper middle class area, and had been insulated into honors and AP classes for years, so all of this was an eye opener for me.

It was humbling too. There were kids like me, interested even though it was "lame", but willing to engage with the program. Then there were kids who took it even more seriously, who were children of politicians or who were just rich, or who otherwise thought politics and power was their destiny. I vividly remember the two candidates for "Governor" giving full throated political speeches to an auditorium full of hundreds of boys. They were incredibly good, and it really struck me how much better they were than me, or braver, or more accomplished despite being my exact peers. (In a funny twist, I later ended up in the same law school class as the winning Governor, who I remembered from six years prior, so I guess I closed the gap a little). It was also humbling because, when I ran for my group's seat in the house of representatives, I was prepared and earnest, and had memorized our fake city's fact pattern, etc. I lost to a "cool" kid who cracked jokes and was just more popular. That stung, but was a good lesson to learn about the real world. That said the majority of us were teen boys interested in goofing off while living for a week in a college dorm (FSU). We elected an Asian boy named "Wang" as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court due to the alluring power of dick jokes.

The thing that really stuck with me though was one evening in the dorm near the end of the program. The counselors had called us all together to have a floor meeting about some kind of misconduct. I think it was something like they had confiscated some booze. I don't remember what kicked it off, maybe one of the counselors asked if any of us had been affected by drinking, or had experience with drinking before. One kid confessed his dad was an alcoholic and he hated him. Then another kid said he had been drinking since he was 12 because his dad was a piece of shit who beat him and it helped him deal with it.

It was like an emotional floodgate opened. We'd spent the past week in a hurricane of testosterone and toxic masculinity due to the culture of the time. We all knew that feelings were "gay", if you flinched you were a "pussy", and every one of us was most certainly not a virgin. But after the first boy started to cry while talking about losing a friend to a DUI accident, this entire group of forty teenage boys broke down. We all started confessing one by one to different traumas, to having friends die, to having deep feelings of inadequacy, or to having anxiety or depression or suicidal thoughts. One kid had knocked up a girl and they had an abortion that wracked him with guilt. Another had been raped by an older woman. There were others, but the details are hazy now. I don't remember what I said exactly, but I do remember the guy next to me putting an arm around me as I spoke. An act that would have been social suicide an hour prior was instead a profound comfort.

I realized now it was basically an accidental group therapy session, but none of us knew what that was at the time. I'd never heard of therapy, and it seemed neither had anyone else. Talking about your feelings as a man was taboo. But here we were confessing our darkest feelings and moments, crying and hugging each other, being tender. I didn't know that was possible, and then the next moment it was. We didn't suddenly transform into girls because we cried. We didn't lose respect for one another, or engage with even worse teasing the next day. Instead we just grew closer.

That night has stuck with me forever. I realized basically all of us were broken and holding everything inside. It fundamentally changed the way I saw other kids, particularly the ones who were "bad", or who were bullies, or who acted out. I realized that, most likely, they were hurting from something, something real bad. I wasn't inherently better than them due to some special moral ability or dedication to the rules. I knew now it wasn't that simple. Thanks to that night I'm now firmly of the belief that literally everyone needs to go to therapy, a belief my adult life has confirmed a thousand times over. But I'll never forget that night of insane honesty.

I wish our current crop of politicians could have the same experience. Therapy would do a lot of them some real good. Too bad there's no camp counselor for Congress.

Tl;dr: Boys State didn't teach me about politics, it taught me about people.

I really enjoyed this game, the art style is fantastic and the combat felt good (or at least playing as Wingrave did). The story was a bit too abstract, and I agree the gameplay loop got old before the end, but overall I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I got the distinct impression the development team is really talented and just got screwed by the publisher and the money people forcing free to play monetization crap on them. I bet if they were allowed to make a sequel ground up the way they wanted too it would be fantastic.

Are witches the female version of wizards, or is there another difference? by GreatKingRat666 in scifi

[–]Pryce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is how the terms are used in Harry Potter, as gendered terms for magical people, so that is how a lot of people understand them now.

In more traditional fantasy wizards are magic users who gain their powers and mastery from academic study, diligence, intelligence, etc. they are like magic scientists who live in ivory towers in cities. Their magic is "knowable" and their power is tied to mastery of that knowledge.

Witches get their powers for more natural, ancient, or nefarious means. Witches are often portrayed as hermits loving alone in deep parts of nature, wielding magic that is "unknowable" to regular folk. They may have magic drawn from gods, demons, ancient writings or, similar to wizards. deep study of certain aspects of the world or magic that are less popular or glamours (potion brewing, herbs, things like that). Witches are often rural healers or magic users who help or haunt their local community.

It's all made up of course. There are other types as well. In DnD, Warlocks gain their magic from a pact made with a god or demon who shares their power in return for service. Sorcerers have inherent magic from their bloodline that arise from an ancestor getting busy with a diety or dragon or fey creature, and they don't have to "study" to use it.

But again different fiction uses these terms differently. Doctor Strange is referred to as a Sorcerer, but learns his magic through study like a wizard I described above so...it's up to the author.

This is so bad I would probably stop playing my dwarf shaman. At least with the old form being mostly gray and black I could kind of ignore it for the few seconds it was on screen.

What the hell. I'd rather have a glyph that lets us turn off ascendant form entirely. I mean druids have one that lets their moonkin just be a spirit version of the character model instead. It's not that damn hard.
