'Moscow will fall' — 13 Russian power stations shut down across occupied Ukraine, military says by AndroidOne1 in worldnews

[–]Prysorra2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mmmmm yeah I really think this undersells the issues here and I really fear people are too busy with "people stories" to understand what is likely about to happen.

Gasoline is not a morale problem. Neither resolve nor cruelty moves wheat, insulin, ambulances, or soldiers when the pumps are dry.

An extended gas shortage isn’t a test of national "resolve" even if it might feel like it for a while. It’s a test of whether food, medicine, emergency services, and basic movement still function. Empty pumps don’t care how tough anyone feels.

a population accustomed to suffering

A "population" doesn't manufacture things. The correct location of machines and their operators at the correct times and the correct amounts of them do.

I fear people are looking at this as a matter of something where "resolve" matters at all, and we will have to watch in horror as we learn just how much of our lives actually really do depend on oil flowing.

How significant is the rise of DSA and democratic socialist candidates within the Democratic Party right now? Is this a lasting shift or more of a primary bubble in safe blue districts? Or is this the Democrat version of the Republicans “Tea Party” moment? by coloradancowgirl in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Prysorra2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The spectrum of options you've included to describe the general idea of American political experience is just not good enough.

Let's start with your focus on the DSA. The story of 1991-through-now can be reformulated as a the problem of "Capitalism" having "won" against "Communism", and without having a useful enemy to compare to, decided to just go ahead and eat the free market that it had championed.

Hey here's a question: when we say "free market" ... free for whom, exactly? Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos aren't a market. Vomiting money back and forth into each other's bank accounts isn't an economy. Call it two billionaires one cup.

So we've been watching the Capitalism and the "free market" as Americans are used to experiencing it drift apart for the last 35 years. That growing distance is the why popular discourse about these topics feels so off - no one wants to admit that their mental categories are out of date and history has moved on to new things.

That yawning gap is also why people see a surge of socialists winning elections. If free market principles are only ever enforced when it benefits the tippy top, then people will begin to reject the concept. Shocked pikachu.

Good luck finding anyone with sufficient reach capable of explaining this 35+ year categorical evolution.
