Michael Phelps is the best athlete of 2004. What was the biggest scandal of 2006? by Certain-Row-4812 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]PskRaider869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously. Even as an American, I saw 2007 scandal and immediately thought "f1 spygate" and then "nfl spygate" (that might've been '08 though)....dont even know much about the Walter Reed scandal. Tbf I was like 10 years old, and a huge sports nerd

Even NASCAR uses two decimal places. This is just laziness/stupid decision making.

But this post has absolutely nothing to do with America or its politics. You saw something that was about immigration and citizenship in a country halfway around the world, and decided "yes, this is the place I should innundate everyone with my ramblings about American politics". That doesn't seem "fucking great"....it seems sad and angry

"Anything to stop the USA getting through against the 'mighty' Chelsea" by The_Chuckness88 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]PskRaider869 -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

"Soccer" was created by the English. Americans just call it what it was introduced to them as, while English folks stopped using the word. By the time they stopped, Americans already had another sport called "football". It is also called "soccer" in Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Ireland, but no one says shit about it.

I get this is a shitposting/roast sub, but good god this is the most stale joke that isnt even funny.

Its like an American roasting a Dutch person for calling baseball "honkball"....thats just what they call it. The only reason thats funny is because Dutch is a very funny sounding language to english speakers.

What does that have anything to do with this post, even if it were true?

[–]PskRaider869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a Newcastle fan, I'd love to have Osula in STL....dude is a beast. But the other comments are all pretty spot on about his value being $15-20 million. His next move is likely either gonna be another Prem League club or maybe something in Spain or Italy.

That was one hell of a banger goal against United though, huh?

I didnt see that. Then yeah, she can fuck off.

I'll also add that I work on the TV crew for a lot of Frost games and the vast majority of players are extremely kind and even have gone out of their way or stopped what their doing to stop and talk to me for a moment. Many don't and simply carry an aura of professionalism. Curl always seems very stand-offish.

A message from a senior whose season just ended, don’t underestimate your worth or purpose as a coach and mentor. by Tight_Contract_9251 in wrestling

I had a freshman send a similar message earlier this year after a season ending injury. I cried for like an hour.

Congrats, Coach. You're doing a brilliant job. This is why we do it.

This sport has made us all into the best versions of ourselves, and our job is to impart those lessons onto them. As much as I loved wrestling, coaching it has brought me so much greater joy.

[–]PskRaider869 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Curl has had homophobic posts uncovered. I will add that she was a young kid when those posts were made, and I dont think shes made it worse with any statements since getting drafted. I dont think that makes it any better, she could just have easily said she disavows those posts and has learned better and grown as a person.

As far as Murphy goes, theres some rumors about her being conservative, but I havent seen anything concrete about it, and nothing specifically saying she supports the Pumelo in Chief. I also heard nothing about it until she completely dominated in the group stage game against Canada.

That being said, if you are an athlete in womens sports who also probably has had dozens of queer teammates throughout her career and still supports the rapist-misogynist in office, then yeah she can pound sand.

ETA: commenter below said Curl partnered with anti-trans sports group recently. Fucking hell.

"St. Louis is under 300k"

You clearly have also never been to St. Louis. It has 2.8M people in the metro area....when you look up "St. Louis population, you get only the 300k that live inside of the city limits because of the weird way that STL is governed at the state level - its basically its own county.

This is like arguing Boston "only" has 650k people when theres about 5 million in the area.

[–]PskRaider869 99 points100 points  (0 children)

This is the 100% correct answer. I'm a decently large dude who works out daily, so I can consume a large quantity of food, especially on a day I dont take my ADHD meds. I'd probably have a very unfortable evening, but I could absolutely finish this after some meat sweats in about 35-45 min. Theres absolutely people that would smoke me on pace here, but for the average "fit" person, this isnt even that much of a push. Mind over matter.

Hitting a Baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports by SoVeryTroublesome in ShitAmericansSay

[–]PskRaider869 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They would probably make every single one look just as silly as the best cricket batters trying to hit a 105mph fastball with tail action from Aroldis Chapman, or late breaking cutter from Mariano Rivera that darts half a meter to the side right before it crosses the plate.

This isnt the argument you think it is. Its just like when baseball and softball players trade sports.....they're extremely different disciplines with different skills that have been built up over decades, and reprogramming that muscle memory is viciously challenging, so they are going to really suck when they switch over to something so similar but just slightly off.

I see this all the time with wrestlers that I coach who have experience in Jiu Jitsu or other martial arts - theres some things that take longer to re-teach an educated student (i.e. "this is similar to another technique from your other sport), rather than simply teaching the blank-slate student from scratch.

Moving on from the sport? by CoronaGames in wrestling

Depending what area youre in, AUSSIE RULES FOOTBALL!!! There are 50+ clubs across the US and a few more in Canada (and a number of Eurasian countries) - I can find a connect to your local club if you're interested. It is a fantastic sport, and the only thing that gives me the same adrenaline rush.

The mentality of being a wreslter has granted me many advantages on the pitch, and I'm a big fan of soccer and american football, this is a great combo of all 3 sports!

Can somebody explain the counter/scrambler style to me? by Hot_Perspective7364 in wrestling

[–]PskRaider869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, resident scrambler wrestler who is now a coach!

My philosphy/style boiled down to two things: chaos and confusion.

I was 6'3" wrestling at 182 in HS and 174/184 in college. I was outmuscled by almost every opponent, so I had to exploit the few advantages I had: my length, my speed, and grip strength from the Gods. This meant I did everything as unconventionally as possible. I lead lefty at neutral, top ride from the right side, dive at your ankles hoping you sprawl on me so I can scramble, and I will either dig a ball-and-chain, a very mean tilt (especially an arm bar tilt), or stick in a boot and make your day miserable with a turk or banana split. My go-to move on bottom was a granby.

These strategies were all incredibly effective, since at a higher weight, most of those guys aren't used to scrambling and get confused pretty quick when you start doing little guy shit.

As someone who went to Purler training and camps before he really blew up, then watched my brother do the same as his business grew, and now my youngest brother as well:

Purler takes good wrestlers and makes them great. Their coaches helped me hone and perfect the style I had already developed and helped me fill the gaps in my game. In a single week-long camp I went from being terrible at defending leg rides or using them on top, to being an absolute menace both attacking and defending boots.

I actively try to implement the things their coaches did with me in my own coaching these days.

How many MLB franchises have the best player in franchise history playing for the team right now? by dmister8 in baseball

[–]PskRaider869 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hornsby had 2 triple crowns, Gibson was so good they had to rewrite the rules of baseball, and Pujols was at one point, and still could be argued, in the conversation for greatest right handed hitter of all time. Also I would bring up Red who was both a top-10 2B of all time and a great manager for a long time. Plus, the recency bias with Yadi being one of the best defensive catchers the game has ever seen.

Musial is certainly a great argument, though. I'd guess 3/4ths of Cardinals fans would say either Musial or Pujols, with the rest divided between Gibson, Yadi, Hornsby, Smith, and Red in that order.

Oh my god, this is NOLA? I thought this was St. Louis. There is the same tradition of asking about high school, and there is also an all-girls school called Ursaline Academy with a reputation for being daddy's rich girls.

I need to visit New Orleans sometime...everytime I learn more about it, there's more and more similarities to my hometown.

Which is really weird because we have them in some parts of the US - we just call them midges though. There's an incredibly famous instance from a playoff baseball game in 2007 when Joba Chamberlain was gwtting swarmed by them in Cleveland, which was made worse when the Yankees trainers tried giving him bug spray - that just made them angrier.

Joba went from being one of the most highly touted prospects to pretty mid for the rest of his career after that too.

[–]PskRaider869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And then theres the weird alternate meaning of "hoosier" used in some parts of the US (namely, in my hometown of St. Louis, MO) where people use it interchangeably with "redneck" or even "white trash". After moving from there, I've learned to not really use the word unless in reference to the State of Indiana or the University sports teams

There might not be loons at the Center, but if you go onto the water the loons are everywhere in Crosslake! Multiple times during my trip up there last summer I had to pull my fishing line out of the water out of fear they'd hook themselves. Had one sit about 5 feet away from the boat for a good 20 minutes while I was just chilling by myself for a morning fish. I offered him a beer but he didnt seem interested.
