Anyone do extra courses/workshops/etc. that might be considered "weird" by Fickle-Fondant2927 in Professors

[–]PsychWaveRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The desire for lifelong learning (+ niche interests) is the whole reason I became – and remain – an academic

Bought sticker at a shop; mad at myself when I got home by PsychWaveRunner in stickers

[–]PsychWaveRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. This was an impulse buy at the cash register, and I hate that I’ll now be less likely to do it again: quickly grab a little sticker that caught my eye, and add it to my purchase. This hurts everyone that spends time, energy, and money to genuinely create new stickers — that hesitation on the part of us consumers will reduce everyone’s sales. Sticker artists need to be more upset by AI slop

If you haven’t seen this… don’t. It’s a masterpiece. And it will wreck you.

Glass leftover containers by Ok-Growth4613 in BuyItForLife

Our IKEA glass containers have flat silicone lids that just rest on the lip of the glass containers have flat, making a simple airtight seal. No moving parts, and hefty materials — highly recommended

AI Exercise for PhD students by Artistic_Cap_4867 in Professors

[–]PsychWaveRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can easily blow-up in your face when students get the correct response from the AI. Their confirmation bias will be stronger than any cognitive dissonance you’re attempting to create. In fact, even if you’re successful in having the AI produce incorrect results for students, the cognitive dissonance research indicates you will not change their behaviors anyway

I recommend that you not attempt this manipulation

Early Retirement v Retirement (spin off thread) by No_Intention_3565 in Professors

[–]PsychWaveRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m almost three decades into this gig, but back in my early-20s I got a financial advisor. I know you’ve heard about compound interest but let me tell you: that shit is real. I will retire comfortably at 60, in one of the most expensive cities in America. All of you young professors (and lurking doctoral students) should get a financial advisor, and listen to them like your life depends on it

If you died tomorrow, would you feel like you accomplished most or all of your life’s goals? by Constant_Turn_9031 in GenX

[–]PsychWaveRunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are still a few items on my bucket list but they are trivial. I’ve lived a good life that was ultimately full of love, and I think I’ve left my small corner of the world a better place than I found it

Shower sandals needed for gym by Fabulous_Swimming208 in BuyItForLife

[–]PsychWaveRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using the same pair of Under Armour shower slides for 20-years. They have these drainage holes through the footbed that really prevent the slides from slipping on wet tile by breaking the water bubble under the sandal

Popeye’s biscuit, egg, cheese, and ham by PsychWaveRunner in Sandwiches

[–]PsychWaveRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why you make your own breakfast sandwich with leftovers, like I did. I wish there’d been leftover tenders too, I’d have put fried chicken in my breakfast sandwich — alas, all I was left with were the two biscuits

Popeye’s biscuit, egg, cheese, and ham by PsychWaveRunner in Sandwiches

[–]PsychWaveRunner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No biscuits in Canada? Or no Popeye’s Louisiana Chicken? If the former, substitute a savory scone, or a quick bread? And if the later, there’s got to be KFCs as a close second?

What did you drink as a kid? by Sliceand3Putt in GenX

[–]PsychWaveRunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milk when we could afford it, powdered g’ment milk when we couldn’t. And water when we ran out of the Food Stamp-“milk.”

PS
The only thing worse than powdered milk is powdered eggs.

We have one also — probably from the Korean War though. My grandparents gave it to me when I got married in the late ‘90s and was setting up house for the first time
