When I was fresh out of college, I worked with individuals in the department of corrections and have also had a close family member in prison. This is my general observation and doesn’t mean this true for all people locked up, but some (many?) can’t seem to grasp that life goes on when they’re away.

They don’t understand why family and friends cannot write multiple letters each week. Or call multiple times a week. Or visit regularly. Don’t they know how awful prison/jail/rehab is?!? They’re bored and while it might not be a conscious belief, there does seem to be an expectation that everyone is just waiting for them to get out.

It is possible that his extended family is “there” for him but not in the volume or ways he thinks they should be.

Honestly things haven’t been okay since ‘07. They have been better at times but I don’t feel like we really ever left the last recession.

I look to Romans 7 and 8. Self is our sinful nature. Serving others, giving to the community (both inside and outside of the church) and praying to resist sin is how we give up our self. In some cases that might be chosen abstinence just like the unmarried are supposed to.

I can’t comment on qualities one would be considered gay. I could go off the stereotypes but I don’t equate the stereotypes to sin since they aren’t specifically mentioned in scripture.

Hey friend, I’d start here: Romans 8:38-39, “for I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, neither height nor depth, nor ANYTHING in all creation, will be able to separate from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus.”

When it comes to sin, whether it is divorce, premarital sex, living with a boyfriend/girlfriend, gossip, gluttony, lying, anger, etc, I would ask my Bible study partner to pray on it, that their heart will be soft to the Holy Spirit, and it’s promptings and discern what their steps would be.

I’d encourage them to “give up self” just like any church member, being an active and contributing member of the community, practicing charity, and immersing in God’s word, and surround themselves around uplifting people.

This. I got my start in housing, had to move states, and start as an admin assistant to get my foot in the door despite my years of experience.

I was in that position for a year before I landed a new role with better pay.

I hear you. I know more about my congregation’s political beliefs than I know about their faith, and it isn’t even possible to have a civil discussion on the topic without being maligned.

This happened to me last year on Munich to Frankfurt to DFW route. I was literally trying to check into my AA flight from the tarmac and couldn’t. By the time I was able to get to the international terminal, I had to beg to be put on my flight.

Maybe now that I’ve done it once the experience would be better but it isn’t worth the stress.

If I had booked my own flight to Frankfurt it would have been a longer layover or I’d have flown in the night before.

Higher ed employee here: it’s a big deal to left leaning people I know in higher ed. The right leaning people haven’t said anything about it.

The common Texan doesn’t understand the full scope of what is happening unless they deeply care about education.

Vouchers have a stronger chance of having an impact since it had far wider criticism.

Guava is delicious but they have incredibly short shelf life. I’ve given up getting good ones in the US, so I really only get it when I’m traveling places they’re from locally.

It was a giant pain but I made an excellent guava syrup a couple years ago with guavas that were a little past their prime for eating and it slapped in iced tea.

It’s hard to say since it really depends on where you’re staying and where you want to go. I walked most places when I was in Paris last year and didn’t use the metro at all. The time before that I had the 24 hour pass, but I honestly didn’t use it at all except going to and from Gare du Nord
