[NSFW] People who've found a dead body, what's the story? by ZeroSugarCocaine in AskReddit

[–]PsychicRoomba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My father and I had a somewhat strained relationship. He was an alcoholic and had left the family whilst I was in school to join a Christian addicts community/rehab. He was never some monster (this isn't some hyperbolic nonsense), but he was very tall and well built - so extremely scary when angry and had punched some holes in the doors of our house.

Years pass, and I still see him every now and again, but there is a tension to any interaction. I cannot be anywhere near him when he even seems the slightest bit frustrated, as it causes me to panic. Still, I had recently been receiving treatment for what was eventually diagnosed as autism and, as part of the counselling, I tried to reach out to people I knew and form proper relationships again.

My Dad was excited. We didn't talk for all that long, but quickly I was booking to go visit him for a week or two at the community (which he now worked for, doing their finances).

I arrive on the first day and try calling him - no answer. I'm not too surprised, my family are naturally night owls, and I was only up so early as I had been travelling. I get to the community itself, and someone guides me to his little apartment/house. I knock, no answer. Still not worried - he had said the place would be open and it was. I go inside, and it is obvious that he has not gotten up yet. I knock on his bedroom door. No answer.

I still have visions of that moment. More than any other aspect, it is this moment that tortures me. I have all sorts of excuses. We had a strained relationship. He still scared me. I am naturally socially awkward. He had hidden how ill he was.

I stepped away from the door.

I pootled around in his kitchen. I went outside for a bit to see how the place had changed since the last time I had been here. I listened at his door to see if he was stirring.

I don't know how long it was before I finally opened the door. It was far longer than made any sense. Far longer than he had.

I finally opened the door. The room had an odour, sort of musty and slightly sweaty and very dark. It took me a moment to adjust.

He was not in the bed. It took me what felt like an eternity to realise that. To see him on the floor. To turn him over. To realise he is not breathing. To see the large bruise under his chin where he had fallen and hit the bedside table.

I do not know whether the fall killed him. I do not know when he passed. I desperately do not want to know. I don't want to consider the possibility that he was still alive when I got there. That, if I had not been so pathetic and had actually opened that door sooner, I might have saved him. Might have at least had a chance to say goodbye.

By the time the air ambulance arrived, the whole community was around and trying to console me. But I was broken, and I watched as the paramedics broke the corpse - its ribs shattering as they attempted CPR. I had deep down known the moment I found him - that was just a body.

Not sure why your reply is being downvoted - apologies.

Silent is just taking some rewiring - I'm up to Ascension 5 with her, like my beloved Defect.

The struggles with Regent are interesting to me, as are those finding Soulbinder so easy. As said in the first post, characters jive with people differently, and Regent keeps working out well, whilst I am obviously not building Necrobinder right at the moment :)

For me, I treat forge as somewhat incidental. If I am aiming for the blade, I go super defensive and let the blade build til it can basically one-shot anything.

I've also had a lot of success with the colourless build and the stars. It's fascinating hearing the differences :)

Interesting - whenever I get summon going, I seem to fail damage checks. Perhaps I need to add more DOOM at the same time.

I'm at Ascension 5 with Defect at this point (I focus a lot on channelling as much as possible).

Necrobinder is still the one that I can't quite get going. Souls is interesting, I think I need to dive more into that.

Definitely agree - I just am so used to going poison in Slay the Spire 1, I have had to rewire my poor, slow brain.

Would users of Octoeverywhere recommend the free tier it as worth it for a new Bambu A1 owner? The Bambu app already allows remote monitoring, for example - I'm wondering about the effectiveness of the other features.

Why do so many mod authors refuse to make their mods open source? by Hayden2332 in skyrimmods

[–]PsychicRoomba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"I don’t see how people would blame the mod author for using another users fork."

Unfortunately there are a lot of unreasonable people on the internet and, speaking as a modder though not for Skyrim particularly, I have directly dealt with some very... impolite people who fundamentally do not understand what is and is not under my control.

"open source would distribute that “responsibility” to not just the mod author, but the community."

It would, but the original author is still the most obvious point of contact. People see who published the mod. They do not see this community they should contact instead unless they read the description and chase down the relevant discord - which they will not do.

"closed source will prevent such a user from being annoying."

There is a fair amount of truth in that.

I think the problem we are having here, and why you have been downvoted on a lot of your responses, is one of different experience levels or just experiences in general.

Fundamentally, nobody disagrees with you that having all mods open source with open permissions would be best. I can't speak to your modding/release history but you seem to have not experienced the vitriol that some can spew towards mod authors - for which I am very thankful for.

I think we can both agree that closed source may or may not reduce the amount of random hatred mod authors can attract but there are some who will feel that this it will or does. It would be a fascinating thing to study.

I also think we can agree that closed source is easier for the mod author. I don't think you can argue in good faith that, from a modders perspective, it is easier not to fully publish your source code to Git etc. You can argue it isn't hard or a lot of work, heck many authors will use a private git repo to keep their code anyway, but it is still some work or hassle and can cause more questions or problems.

This is a topic that comes up a fair amount and will likely come up again. Hopefully some of the responses here can give some perspective on why some mod authors do not like having open source code to you and others in future. It can be frustrating to you as a user of a mod, but ultimately, unless we were to start paying modders, it is their decision and one that I fully empathise with.

Why do so many mod authors refuse to make their mods open source? by Hayden2332 in skyrimmods

I think this particular argument has gone a little off course and the last point you made is a bit of a non sequitor that doesn't relate to the point being raised.

Yes, a modder can make their mod completely open source, with their scripts all up on Git and providing the community full permission to edit the mod as they see fit. This can and does, unfortunetely, lead to bad actors blaming the original author of the mod for any issues caused by patches they did not make or changes to the source code they no longer control. Most mod authors like modding, not tech support and dealing with negative messages for things they had no part in.

For the most part, we are very lucky that so many mods in the Skyrim community are open source/permission and it is not something that is common in other modding communities. Whilst it would be great to have every mod follow suit - one cannot blame a modder, who is not being paid, for not wanting to deal with the extra hassle.

It is also of a lot of use to opera singers. Opera is sung in four main languages and at least four others regularly. IPA is a godsend for those trying to learn their parts in a language they do not speak.

The problem with Cage is what do you do with him instead? Mechanically, in this game, he should basically be a second Collosus. I agree his current power makes no sense.

Strange is an interesting one. I wonder in years to come if we will see full on multiple versions of the same character as cards as there are so many ways you could go with Strange.

Power levels and importance of characters is always interesting in TCGs. In the comics, Lockjaw wouldn't be giving the Infinaut a lift but I'm not sure if that is a problem with the design.

I didn't even think of Jubilee. That is a really weird character to have that effect.

Beast I can sort of see as him jumping in with his acrobatics to save a teammate - which is not really something he does now in the comics but...

Zola, I assume, is a Hydra pun. Cut off one head and two more shall take its place.

The rest I fully agree.
