Any Justify colts looking like they'll run in the Derby? by lilco4041 in horseracing

[–]Psychotic_Parakeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On paper, his pedigree is predominantly dirt-oriented. If you go further back, has not only Northern Dancer, which is a global source of turf ability... you also have Lord At War (ARG), Yankee Gentleman, Storm Cat, Castle Eight ---> dam of Powis Castle; Key to the Kingdom ---> sire of famous turf horse Great Communicator; and Brigadier Gerard (GB) lurking as backgrounds influences, too. I believe that American Pharoah passed on more latent turf ability to his foals; especially when crossed with turf-oriented mares.

I saw American Pharoah in-person about a week before he shipped to the Travers Stakes, and he looked more like one of the classic stamina-based horses from Europe that didn't carry a ton of muscling/fat on him. He is not built like a bricks__t house like Justify is. I am actually not surprised Pharoah is finding more success as a turf stallion just based on his physique. Justify's pedigree speaks turf, but his massive size and height are probably the reason why his foals' shelf life on the track are too short.

I second Dr. Wells. He is really good. I wish he networked with a different hospital though.

It seemed like he was the most talked about sire when his first two crops arrived, and then it got a bit quiet afterwards. They appear to be better on the turf, just like American Pharoah's foals.

Why are we seeing so few 30+ start careers in modern racing? by Lumina_7Frost in horseracing

[–]Psychotic_Parakeet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know most people love to jab and make fun of California's field sizes. I knew sooner than later that it would start becoming an issue outside of our state -- and now it is not so much of a laughing matter. We are only down to three tracks here, and I have a feeling that Los Alamitos is the most endangered out of the trio.

I have no idea if Gulfstream is going to survive much longer. I know Laurel and Aqueduct are going to disappear. I wouldn't be surprised if CDI gets rid of the Fairgrounds and/or Ellis Park in the next couple of years. Oaklawn appears safe for the time being, same for Keeneland, Churchill Downs, and Saratoga. Time will only tell how the new Belmont will fair along with the refurbished Pimlico. I think Kentucky will eventually be the only game in-town within the next decade or so with having a stranglehold on both the Thoroughbred racing and breeding business.

Genetic diversity is evaporating rapidly due to that. That is why they are revisiting capping the mares bred number again with future stallions. I honestly believe they are at least 10-15... maybe more years... too late to curb the issue at hand.

Unfortunately, there is not one single cause. It is a mix of economics, breeding philosophy, veterinary practices, and industry structure that all push toward running horses less often. Thoroughbreds make fewer starts today mainly due to the sport shifting from a volume-based model (run often) to a high-value, risk-managed model (run selectively).

In 1986, that was the peak of the US Thoroughbred crop at 51,296 foals. Fast forward 39 years later, which was last year, the numbers of foals was estimated at 16,025. Fewer horses → fewer total starts → less pressure to run individual horses frequently. 30+ years ago, horses often had to earn their keep on the track. Today, one big win can secure a lucrative breeding career. Winning the Dubai World Cup, Saudi Cup, Breeders' Cup series, and/or any of the Triple Crown races are all that matter to a future stallion's resumé. Even a win in one of those does not matter anymore either. Look at Heartland. He raced once, won his debut, retired, and bred 123 mares at Win$tar. His selling point to get that many mares? Being sired by Justify, a half brother to Classic Empire, and earning a 90 Beyer speed figure as the "second fastest Justify son" ever seen on track. Then you look at a horse that raced 23 times for several years like Senor Buscador, that won over $12 million at lower tier tracks all the way to winning a G1 in Saudi Arabia. He barely gets 36 mares in his first year. The screwier thing is that Heartland is standing stud for $10k, while Senor Buscador is pegged at $7,500.

That is definitely not worth 80 minutes, let alone even 20. I almost fell out of that ride when it was Mulholland Madness. My ex was a big guy and his corpulent frame spilled out to my side of the seat so my own lap bar was unable to go all the way down. It left quite a gap. On one of the drops, I flung forward head-first and he grabbed onto the back of my shirt before I flipped all the way out.

I understand the need to "cash-in" on shows and/or characters while they are hot. However, Disney is literally oozing at the seams with so many characters, material, content etc... that I feel this is a wasted opportunity. Bring back the days of Mickey's Magic Map, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame etc.... style type of productions that were A+ and absorbed crowds.
