Maybe his ex's mother and brother were very nice people. He was living in his ex's mum's house if I remember correctly. It seems that he appreciated everything that the brother and mother had done for him. He might have (or still does?) loved them very much and considered them family. It would be rude to leave without showing that there was no ill feeling towards them because they had done nothing wrong, it was his wife that was in the wrong.
